of knowing he and his Allies are on their way to a victory from whirh they need not be diverted except by their own abort' comings Now 1 suppose such an optimistic outlook will evoke protests from those who while feel ing we shall win ultimately believe the general public should be led to view the situ tlon ai through a glass darkly The Idea la that the public will work harder If It believer we are getting a beating Maybe so but thii column lecla the man In the atreet thinki soundly enough and best results are obtained by giving him the facts And one fact la that we are getting ahead with our job of beating the axis Not Out Of Tha Woods That does not mean we are out of the woods and romping home to victory On the contrary we are on the verge of the bloodieat fighting of the whole war We are about to measure arms with Hitler in a decisive battle which may open any day There are frightful dangers yet In be surmounted and If we do not Density our effort if we I ken the least hit we may be beaten But we definitely can win if wa go alt out Now Set To Outdo Axis Uncle Sam's greatest Individual achievement probably Ilea In production that Is til starting from arratch and in six months making such great strides that on May 19th Dqnald Nelson chairman of the War Productions Board waa able to announre the United Nations war production la "greater than the axis' In every category" That la not to say we have caught up with the axia nations because they are profiting by years cf Intensive effort -1' does mean that we now are set to overtake them If we strain every nerve That la of vast Importance because as this column has so often insisted this la a war of resources of which production and transportation are an Integral part Soldiers alone rannot win this war Men on the battlefield are helpless without mater ieL Long War Brlnga Disaster Thus the worker In the factory and shipyard at home la playing Just as Imports ib-a part in the defense of his country as la the soldier at the front Failure of the man at home to produce could wreck our war effort Just as quickly as could a revolt of the soldiery Sqjupon the extent of our production depends the length of this war a very long confllrt will be disastrous even If we "win" With goed reason we have prideful faith In both the worker and the soldier Hitler declared America could not increase her production In time to save the Allies But we are on the way to perform just that feat Washington officials in dose touch with production say the war (Vy be brought to a turning point Veil year although victory could not be expected nearly to soon FIghUng Men Everywhere America's fighting men now are In all theaters and Lieutenant Gen' eral Brehon Somervell United States Army supply chief says "we can fully surpassed Nazi tank production months ago Our warplanes are battling In all zones They are auatainlng Australia In a moment of dire peril they have materially helped alow Japan they are fighting for China and for Russia they are participating In the unparalleled raids against Germany And Under Secretary of War Patterson says the United States will produre more than ML000 planes this year the mark
