Truxton to honor a friend For a halfentury, the few minutes it takes to drive the length of the Cortland County village of Truxton has been most memorable because of the statue one encounters at a Main Street curve a memorial erected to native son John J. McGraw and his Hall of Fame baseball feats. By this fall, the village will have a second Route 13 memorial to a sports figure this one honoring Binghamton native Andy Tei who coached a variety of Truxton sports and directed the little school's music program for almost 40 years. Tei died a year ago January. The fund, still open to contributions, is past the $25,000 mark to erect a monument including a Vermont-granite likeness of Tei at "Andy's Corner." Where's that city? In this week's issue of the Sunday weekly newspaper that is published in -Williamsport, Grit, sports writer George Jansson recalls a Wil- liamsport Bills news conference early in the current Eastern League baseball season.

The new owners of the Bills are Stuart and Larry Revo, who bought into the EL five years ago with the announced intention of moving to the new Binghamton stadium that at the time Mayor Juanita Crabb's game plan scheduled for 1986 availability. More recently, although continuing to tread water in Pittsfield, and now in Williamsport, "they've been widely rumored as the franchise-holders whom EL president Charlie Eshbach has promised. "Is that true?" Larry Revo was asked by a Williamsport Sun reporter at the aforementioned news conference. Revo's reply, which Jansson says he still has in his notebook: "Binghamton! Man, I don't even know where Binghamton is." What he probably meant to say was, "Man, 1 don't even see where Binghamton's stadium is." With a quick off-the-record second from Eshbach. Fox is sports editor of the Press Sun-Bulletia.

Braves 1, Dodgers 0 It recalls, all too painfully, the 1983 Post 82 powerhouse wmning the state title with perhaps its finest team in history a 53-2 record and 35-game winning streak but winding up emasculated in regional at Pittsfield, by demands on several regulars to leave for college and high school commitments. The national Legion playoff Post 82 Continued from Page 1C will play in the Region 2 Tournament at Boyertown, Pa. Play will begin in all of the country's eight regions next Wednesday. New York State American Legion baseball chairman Harold Wnght said only four states send two teams to regional play New York, New Jersey, Minnesota and Pennsylvania. Regional champions advance to the American Legion World Series Aug.

23-27 at Millington, Tenn. Endicott won its last state Legion title in 1983 at Cooperstown, becoming the first state champion from Broome County since Johnson City in 1933. Last year, Orchard Park eliminated Endicott from the state tournament with a 6-5 win at Doubleday Field. Orchard Park finished second. Both Orchard Park (18-5) and Endicott return many players from last season's Legion teams.

In addition, Orchard Park and Union-Endicott high schools, the main feeders for each Legion team, have met the last three years in the Class A state scholastic playoffs. U-E eliminated Orchard Park in June with a 5-2 win in the state quarterfinals. Orchard Park was the 1988 defending state champion. U-E (21-3) fell to Connetquot, 8-1, in the semifinals. Orchard Park defeated U-E in the 1987 and 1988 state playoffs.

"Losing last year (at Cooperstown) wasn't a pleasant experience," Endicott right fielder Chuck Kulle said. "It makes us a little more hungry, losing two one-run ballgames. We're peaking. Hopefully we can turn it up one more notch." The losers of the first two games meet at 4 p.m. Thursday, while the winners face each other at 10 a.m.

O-Yankees' rally defeats Auburn ONEONTA -i Dave Howell's triple broke a seventh-inning tie and helped the Oneonta Yankees to a 6-4 New York-Penn League victory over the Auburn Astros on Tuesday. Paul Oster scored on Howell's triple to break a 3-3 tie and Howell scored on Sherman Oban-do's single to give Oneonta a 5-3 lead. James Moody relieved Oneonta starter Rick Rhodes and pitched five innings to even his record at 2-2. Moody allowed one run on two hits, walked two and struck out four. Mike Gardella pitched the final inning, striking out two, to pick up his 11th save.

Orlando Miller atoned for his two second-inning errors that helped Auburn to a 3-0 lead. He had an RBI single in the second inning and added his first home run of the season in the fourth to cut the def icit to 3-2. Howell's sacrifice fly tied the game, 3-3, in the fifth. The losers' bracket final is 1 p.m. Friday. The championship game is 10 a.m. Saturday. If a second game is needed to determine the state champion, it will be played immediately following Saturday's first game.

Endicott likely will face Plattsburgh left-hander Mark Buole (9-3), who OTB Pirates coach Nate Salant said has "five or six major-league scouts following him everywhere he goes." Buole also is Pittsburgh's leading hitter at .413. Lefty-hitting Jason Miller (.405) and Jim Ryan (.387) carry Pittsburgh's other big sticks. As for Endicott's starter. Post 82 coach John Roma said it will not be ace lefty Ed Magur. Tve got to get the other guys some work," Roma said.

"If I want a lefty, it will definitely be (Corey) Barrett. If it's a righty, it will either be (Jason) DeLorenzo, (Marc) McK-ercher or (Russ) Tieskoetter. The OTB Pirates (30-16) return three players from its 1987 Legion state championship team, including Tom Balducci, who nailed down the title with a complete-game win. Righty Ed Kehrli (8-2) and cleanup hitter Ray Tyrell (.266) are the only other returnees. "We're a pitching and defense type of team with some timely hitting," Salant said.

"I don't have people with big batting averages." Roma said his team is ready to play. "(We) definitely want to advance," Roma said. "We'll run on them, try to make them make mistakes. I'm proud that 82 will represent Broome County. We want to go up there to let them know what Broome County baseball is about." Said DeLorenzo: "I think we're really hungry.
