The Savannah Republican, of the Sd says If the redemption of their bills, by specie or its equivalent, be tantamount to a resumption of specie pay men tit, then 'have our banks in Savannah resumed. We learn from authority that all the banks in our city were selling exchange on Xew York yesterday, at a half of one per cent, premium, and are prepared to furnish any amount at that price. This wholly suereede8 the necessity for the payment of specie, as it would take the half per cent, to transport it to New York. We may also add, that for weeks our banks have nofrefused specie to bill holders in any case where it was needed, in reasonable amounts, for individual convenience indeed, we believe this has been their uniform practice from the date of the suspension. We have our mind's eve one of our city banks that has paid over for duties alone.

This places our currency on a specie basis, and we hope in a few days more to record the gratifying fact of a complete resumption. hAD Affair at ClintonL Mass. Three Mass. 5 Persons Burnt to Death. The Boston Tran script furnishes the following account of a sad tragedy that occurred at Clinton, on the morning of the 25th ult.

At about 2 o'clock a large barn containing hay, on the Stewart place, w.is discovered to be on tire, and was entirely destroyed. Soon after this lire had been put out, an alarm was given that a small dwelling house in that part Clinton known as" California was on tire. When the firemen reached the spot, the building was entirely on lire, and three persons perit lied in the names. They were an old seventy, a widow of thirty, aud her child, Irish. The bodies of the man and child were badly burnt that of the woman less ho.

The tire, when discovered, was in the part of the house, and is supposed to have commenced there, but whether accidental or the work of design is unknown. How very Shocking. It is reported that a Parisian husband has ionnd in his wile's pri vate journal, a faithful record not only of lier i own sins, but those of her female friends. The names of their male accomplices were not omitted, the names of members of the cabinet, counsellors, senators, judges and other eminent persons of the state figure in it. The furious husband confiscated the indiscreet manuscript, packed his trunks, left his wile, has instituted proceedings for a divorce, after acquainting the husbands of his wife's friends of their misfortunes.

In Freights we have noticed a lair amount of business with a firmer market. and Exchange has been heavy without important altera tion in toe rates. The weather has been cool, clear and pleasant daring ne greater part ol tne week.

COTTON We lift the Cotton market at the close of our last weekly review with a rather quiet appearance, bot on Saturday a fair demand prevailed, and the sales embraced ll.ftoo bales at the range of our previous na ures. On Monday the America's advices, reporting an advance of fally kd. at Liverpool, Induced factors to claim a corresponding advance here, say Ijc, bot these rlewi were not responded to by buyers, and an improvement or 9 kjC was accepted, the day's business amounting to about 10,600 bales. On Tuesday but few buyers came forward, and although holders onered concessions, barely sooo bales were sold daring the day, the advance of the previous day being lost, and the market closing unsettled and dull at Saturday's quotations. The demand on Wednesday was confined to a few parties, but the transactions included some large lists, which swelled the business to about M.ooo bales for the day, prices showing no material change, and yesterday the movement was quite limited, barely 40U) bales changing hands with considerable irregularity in the rates, which however, were generally in favor of buver.

To day with still easier rates for buyers the sales bare amounted to about 11,000 bales, making the entire business of the week bales, the market closing at the range of our quo tst ions, which are slightly modified.
