LitUt critters, pole climbers and totpd froups shared center state Saturday at the fifth Cahawba Day Festival, an annual event aimed at renewing interest is Alabama's first capital More thaa 3.000 people from throughout the state browsed in arts and crafts booths and basked to warm sunshine at what organizers called the best of the five festivals. "This is a relaxed, laid-back atmosphere and that's what we've been trying to present ever since the first one," said Dallas County Probate Judge Johnny Jones. "Neit year we ought to set some of the construction under wsy." He referred to the Initial steps in creating a park at the site where Alabama was born in the second decade of the 19th Century.

Ghost Town Cahawba has been a ghost town for more than 100 years, but more than $600,000 in grants from stale and federal sources are expected to breath new life into the old capital. The Cahawba Day Festival was launched to rekindle interest in the site and, while organizers have not made much money at the program, they feel they have accomplished their goal. "We knew we wouldn't be able to raise much to do what we wanted to do, but the festival has stirred a lot of interest in Montgomery and that is where the money comes from," Mid former Selma Mayor Carl Morgan. The plan is to turn Cahawba into a park with a welcome center, boat ramps, picnic areas and other features. "I felt it was my obligation to be here," said Carol Cermet, a Birmingham herb and spice maker who sold her wares and promoted Cahawba throughout the day.

"I'm pleased the state is going to do something about restoring it." Charlotte Barker was also beaming because her pet took top honors in the Prettiest Possum contest. "He really is housebroken," she said. "He also likes to eat liver, slaw and mashed potatoes. I let bun run around the bouse and be loves it." Oppie must have loved the competition because he didn't have any. There were only five frogs entered in the Jumping contest, but the helpers were not upset by the small turnout.

"We're having a lot of fun," said RelU Smith. II. "It's all for Cahawba and we nope it won't be long before it's like it once was." 1 he IVimKJonot orpktlcof the (it) ol Montyonu-ry. the Stale of Alatvimawrany ptilitiiahuhJivisionthimd.and miilur he i red it niirthe taxing power it vnd st jiew any poliiual suhdiviMon thereof sA hep therefor.
