The eight-woman finals were watched by a crowd of about 9,000. Shatto was in second place after five of the eight dives in the finals, but dropped to her final position of fifth after a controversially-scored sixth dive. The Soviet Union's Elena Vaytsekhovskaia won the gold medal with 406.59 points. Ulrika Knape of Sweden, the 1 972 Olympic champion, settled for silver with 390.

The bronze medalist was Debbie Wilson of Columbus, Ohio, at 401.07. Shatto scored 389.58. A Montreal Gazette editorial said, "The women's tower diving final had many Canadians up in arms at the obviously-biased marks tabled by the Soviet and Swedish judges. "Cindy Shatto of the Pointe Claire Diving Club had an excellent night, consistently putting her dives in the water with artistic expression and near-perfect form. Every time it looked as if she was to pull up on the leaders, she received a very mediocre score from the Soviet, the Swede, or both.

"In our opinion, Cindy was cheated out of at least a bronze medal because of political hassling between international judges." At the time Cindy said, "People ask me if I'm disappointed and all I can say is 'fifth best in the world isn't She admits the Olympic controversy was a contributing factor in her retirement from competition in 1978. By RON GROTKE Staff Writer Cindy Shatto's last name was a household name in Canada long before she took her first dive in her back yard in suburban Toronto. Chronicling the rise of a talented young diver, Canadian newspapers of the early and mid-1970s automatically mentioned who Cindy Shatto's father was. That's because he is former Toronto Argonauts running back Dick Shatto, 57. He was named to the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1975.

Dick Shatto's playing career ended in 1965, but he still had a sharp eye for potential athletic talent. For a time, he worked as general manager of the Argonauts. His talent scouting wasn't limited to the football field. The Shattos' family pool in Willowdale, Ontario, turned put to be another productive venue. "We had a backyard pool and my dad used to hold a pole out for me to dive over," SUNY-Bing-hamton diving coach Cindy (Shatto) Weingartner said.

"He could tell I had good form. I'd always have my toes pointed and clear the bar easily." Father encouraged daughter in the sport and she took to it quickly. At 13, Cindy was invited to train with Canadian national coach Don Webb. "So I moved away from home and dove for him," she said. Cindy lived with Webb's family about three years, the first two in Winnipeg.

When Webb moved to Ottawa, she rented the lower level of his house. day, six days a week. Less than 11 months before climbing the IOmeter platform at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, Cindy summed up her lifestyle in 1975: "All I can remember is diving meets, diving practices and getting to them by plane, train, bus, car and foot. My head's full of diving." Her first major successes came on the three-meter springboard. She placed 1 1th in the 1973 World Championships at Belgrade, Yugoslavia, then won gold in the 1974 British Commonwealth Games at Christchurch, New Zealand.

She took a year off from high school to train full-time for the 1976 Olympic Games. Canada's Olympic trials were held in May, 1976, in her home pool, the Pointe Claire Aquatic Center in suburban Montreal. "Competing in the Olympics has been my dream since I began diving," she said at the time. "They have been in the back of my mind for about 10 years now." After the first night of competition, the dream appeared over. Cindy placed a disappointing fourth in three-meter qualifying, one place too low to make the Canadian team.

The 10-meter platform event the following day offered one last chance, but it didn't look like a good one. "I was no great tower diver until '76," she says now. "I'd done it but I hated it." Going into the platform competition with a nothing-to-lose attitude, she stunned the field by winning it with a Canadian-record 401.88 points. "I knew she'd be a good coach and get all of us farther than we'd been," Loopman said. Browne said Weingartner's competitive background brings "a greater depth and breadth of experience" to her coaching. "She can describe experiences that I couldn't, having only been on the college level," Browne said.

"She gives them more confidence. When she says 'you can do this' and when I say it are two different things." Sometimes after practice, the new coach takes a few dives for fun. "I hadn't been on a board for 1 3 years," Cindy said. Like many former high-level athletes, she preferred not to dive at all even for pleasure if she wasn't in competitive form. "She still goes into the water without any splash at all," Loopman said.

With her coaching job only being part-time, Cindy wants to organize a competitive and developmental diving club that would be based at SUNY-Binghamton. Both Weingartners left good jobs when they moved. Bill was district maintenance manager for a company that built apartment houses. Cindy was assistant to the owner of Mundial International, a firm specializing in soccer promotions. In order to give Cindy time to become established in the community, Bill isn't working for the time being.

"I'm putting her career first and foremost on anything we do," he said. "For so many years we tried to get her to do this and we're so excited. I will play Mr. Mom for a while, and I actually love it. "Coaching at SUNY has just completely opened her up.

She totally has her sights set on taking this a lot farther." 7 DuchessSara 2 60 2.20 Continued from Page 1C had to be wrong with Fortunately for Rogers, who recently qualified for his first NCAA Division III championship, nothing was wrong. Indeed, Weingartner's return to diving might never have happened except in Broome County. "I'd never wanted to coach my husband kept trying to get me to, but I kinda held back," said Weingartner, 33, while overseeing practice in SUNY's East Gym pool. Binghamton native Bill Weingartner, 34, met Cindy Shatto in 1979 when she walked into a Tarpon Springs restaurant he was managing. She was in search of a job.

Having tired of diving, she stopped training and moved from Michigan to Flor-' ida to stay with her parents. "She walked in and I fell in love," said Bill, who didn't comprehend the magnitude of her athletic achievements until later in their relationship. "Like her father, she's not one to talk about herself." Scrapbooks kept by Cindy's parents, Dick and Lynne. Shatto of Clearwater, filled him in. Dick Shatto has a few clippings of his own.

A native of Springfield, Ohio, he played football for the University of Kentucky and spent 12 seasons at halfback with the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League, from 1954-65. His 6,958 career rushing yards ranks eighth on the CFL's all-time list. He was elected to the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1975, a year Cindy spent training in her attempt to make Canada's Olympic team. Despite persistent coaxing from her husband and parents, Cindy for years resisted suggestions that she become involved with diving again. "We always wanted her to do something with all of that skill she had," said Bill, a member of North High's Class of '74.

"Previously, a lot of the dives I did I just never really knew what I was doing. She tells us exactly what it is we have to do." On the one-meter springboard, Rogers set a school record with a 279-point score against New Paltz State on Dec. 8.

That broke a mark of 274 he set as a sophomore. The Division III qualifying cutoff is 285. Rogers qualified for the NCAA Division III championships with an 1 1-dive score of 463.35 on the three-meter springboard Jan. 26 against Oswego State. His old high was 433 as a sophomore.

"We've worked on his takeoff it was a little quick and low before, and we've worked on the mechanics of his dives," Cindy said. As a senior, Rogers expected to put diving behind him after this season. Now he's planning to stay at SUNY-Binghamton for graduate studies and continue to train under Weingartner. "I'd hate to see him quit diving just because he's done with school," Cindy said. "We hope to start getting him in U.S.

Diving meets. It takes eight or nine years to become an Olympic athlete. He's too good to quit now." Marsha Loopman, a sophomore from Victor, has improved her personal best on the three-meter board from 225 points last season to 244. on her coming up here for diving, but it was in the back of our minds. "Diving is just too large in Florida.

Like my sister told me, 'Sometimes it's good to be a big fish in a little pond. The decision to return to Bill's hometown was one the Broome County Chamber of Commerce would love. "We were tired of Florida," Bill said. "We wanted to come up here and raise our children. Binghamton gets a lot of knocks but, believe me, it's a pretty wholesome place." So the family, which includes sons Richard, 10, and Christopher, 2, moved north last June.

Their Mill Street home is in the neighborhood Bill grew up in. Richard is a third-grader at Ben Franklin School, which his dad attended. "It's the first time I've ever lived in a small town," Cindy said. "I like it because everything is family-oriented." Despite 13 years away from diving, she doesn't believe the sport has passed her by. "I've done every dive that these kids are doing," she said.

"Mechanics in diving is pretty much the same. All the newer dives do is add another somersault or another twist. You still have to take off the board the same way and enter the water the same." Rijo, 25, threatened to leave Cincinnati following this season if he didn't get a multi-year deal. He had been scheduled for an arbitration hearing on Tuesday in New York. Rijo won the first and fourth games of the Reds' 1990 World Series sweep of the Oakland Athletics, and had an 0.59 ERA. During the season, he was 14-8 with a 2.70 ERA. He had been asking $2.9 million for this season in arbitration, and the Reds offered $1.6 million.

Brewers: Second baseman Jim Gantner lost his arbitration case and will make $1 million instead of his request for $2 million. Gantner, 37, hit .263 with 25 RBI last season. BASEBALL NOTES The Brewers also agreed to terms with right-hander Mark Knudson, a one-year deal for $485,000. Knudson was 10-9 last season. Indians: Gave Tom Candiotti the richest one-year salary in team history, avoiding arbitration by settling on a $2.5 million contract for 1991.

Candiotti was asking for $3.05 million and the Indians had countered by offering $2. 15 million. Candiotti, 33, was 15-11 with a 3.65 ERA last season. Orioles: Signed outfielder Brady Anderson to a one-year contract worth $165,000. Anderson hit .231 last year in 89 games.

White Sox: Outfielder Cory Snyder lost his arbitration battle. He was seeking $1.02 million and was offered $800,000. He hit .233 last year. 88 $l(o I 7 I 4-Wheel Alignment Prti Htra if ntdd. We adjust caster, camber ft toe.
