Southern edges Rebels THE GREENWOOD ft Sporfs Sunday, October 5, 1 980 Pages VAw By LOUIS HILLIARY PARK Commonwealth Sports Editor JACKSON The University of Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles's overcame a miserable first quarter and a 14-0 deficit to dominate the final three periods, and in so doing, take a 28-22 win over the Ole Miss Rebels. "I'm so proud of our team," said USM head coach Bobby Collins afterwards. "They have proved time after time that they'll never quit. The players all believe and so do the coaches." Ole Miss came out running the ball up the middle and stinging the Southern defense with short passes. AFTER TAKING the opening kickoff and running 8 26 of the clock, the Rebels completed a 17-play, 74-yard drive with a 4- yard run by Buford McGee.

Todd Gatlin's successful PAT gave Ole Miss a 7-0 lead. Southern took the ensuing kickoff, ran three plays and punted. It was the only time during the first period that the Eagles handled the pigskin. The Rebels took the USM kick at the Ole Miss 36 yard line and promptly drove 64 yards on 12 plays, using up 6:28 enroute to their second TD. John Fourcade, the Rebel signal caller, ran into the end zone with 13:13 showing in the second quarter.

Gatlin's kick put Ole Miss ahead 14-0 but the Rebel offense was never really in the game after that. THE GOLDEN EAGLES took the kickoff which followed Ole Miss' second tally and drove 80 yards for a touchdown as USM quarterback Reggie Collier and runningback Sammy Winder came alive. Winder took a pitch and charged from the Rebel 13 to the 1, then pushed through up the middle for the score. Winston Walker's PAT added a point, but Ole Miss held the lead 14-7 with 7:54 left before the half. After Ole Miss ran three plays and kicked, Southern took the punt at the USM 27.

The Eagles had pushed out to their own 38 when Collier connected up the middle with Don Horn who took the bullet on the run and sprinted into the end zone. The reception was good for 68 yards and the TD. WALKER'S PAT knotted the contest at 14-14 with 3:39 left in the half the way it remained at intermission after a USM drive played out at the Ole Miss 14 as time expired. "We were concerned when we fell behind 14-0," conceded Coach Collins, "but we stuck with our game plan. We didn't run scared." Southern took the lead midway the third quarter when Winder turned the corner at the Ole Miss 11 and threw himself over a Rebel defender to fly the last 5 yards to paydirt.

The PAT gave USM the lead 21-14, capping the second half opening drive which covered 80 yards in 14 plays. THE GOLDEN EAGLES made it 28-14 with 8:39 left in the game when Winder tallied from the one and Walker booted the PAT. Although the Eagles had dominated the game's midportion, Ole Miss managed to build a drive following the Southern kickoff. The Rebels marched 80 yards in 13 plays to score. Chester Thornton ran 4 yards for the TD then caught a pass to complete the 2-point conversion.

However, USM held the lead 28-22 with 4:11 left OLE MISS got a big break on their scoring drive when a pass interference call on fourth down and 28 moved the ball from the USM 44 to the Eagle 8 and gave Ole Miss a first down. 'lne Rebels got another big break when Winder fumbled at his own 12 and Ole Miss recovered with 3:20 remaining in the game. But instead of moving toward the Eagle end zone, the Rebels went in reverse. After Kinny Hooper picked up 4 yards to the Southern 8, Fourcade lost 2 back to the 10. The Rebel quarterback was then sacked and called for intentional grounding the football to put Ole Miss in a fourth down and 29 yards to go position at the USM 31.

OLE MISS' final chance went down the AP OLEMISS LINEBACKER NAKITA WILLIAMS MAKES TACKLE Southern's icky Floyd stopped, but Southern won 28-22 4. 9j a 428-yard game total. Collier was the leading rusher and passer with 110 yards on the gallop and 143 by the pass. Winder gained 97 yards on 22 tries and scored three TDs. HOOPER WAS OLE MISS' leading rusher with 48 yards on 12 tries.

McGee, who did not play in the second half due to an ankle injury, gained 33 yards on nine attempts. Fourcade was 14 completions of 27 attempts in passing for 106 yards. "It just seems like we don't have the killer instinct," said Ole Miss' All-SEC quarterback referring to the fact that two teams in two weeks have come from behind to topple the Rebels. Southern's victory kept the Eagle record unblimished at 4-0. "This was a complete win," said Collins.

"When our offense needed to score, they did. When our defense needed to make a big play, they did. And our kicking was great all day. There are too many heros to name." Miss 7 7 0 822 S. "They didn't do nothing to stop us," said Fourcade in the dressing room.

We didn't throw the ball right it was my fault. I made too many mistakes. "I thought the Texas was bad," the Rebel quarterback said, "but this was the worst game I ever threw a football in in my whole life." REBEL HEAD COACH StdV2 Sloan said in his post game press conference that his stratgey had been to play a more conservative game. "We wanted to keep the ball away from them (the Eagle offense) if we could," said Sloan. "We did that early but we had a couple of mixups in the second quarter and weren't able to sustain a long drive." Indeed, the second stanza was almost a reverse of the first.

Ole Miss had the ball for 13:05 of the opening period. Southern Mississippi kept the ball for 9 36 in period two and continued to maintain possession in the third and fourth quarters 9:53 and 8 54, respectively. The Golden Eagle defense held the Rebel offense, which came into the game ranked 6th in the nation and leading the Southeastern Conference, in closer check than any of the Rebel's previous four opponents. OLE MISS PICKED UP 102 yards rushing and 106 passing for 208 total far below the almost 500-yard-per-game pace the Rebels were setting coming into Saturday's contest. Southern Mississippi gained 299 yards on the ground and 143 through the air for moved to the Mississippi State one yard line on a pass interference call, and Holmes picked up the TD on fourth down.

However, a Holmes fumble was recovered by Tyrone Keys, and Bond led a 67-yard scoring drive. He ran for 12, passed for 13, then scored on a nine-yard dash around right end to tie the score. THE BULLDOGS' Johnnie Cooks picked off a deflected Dave Wilson pass a few minutes later, setting up the Bond-to-Ellis scoring pass and giving the Bulldogs a 14-7 halftime lead. The Illini mistakes continued in the second half. A Calvin Thomas fumble was picked up by the Bulldogs' John Miller, and Mississippi State marched 56 yards to set up the Wonsley TD run in the third quarter.

In the final quarter, Illinois kicker Kirk Bostrom bobbled a snap, his punt was blocked and picked up by Mississippi State. THIS TIME, the Bulldogs moved 39 in college football. Carter sparked an Irish ground attack that wore down the Spartans in the second half. The sophomore piled up 254 yards rushing, his third straight game over 100 yards, and one yard shy of the Notre Dame record held by Vagas Ferguson. He raced 53 yards to set up reserve tailback Jim Stone's 1-yard scoring plunge late in the game after Michigan State came within a point of tying the score.

Notre Dame now is 3-0, with all its victories against Big Ten Conference teams. Michigan State dropped to 1-3.
