2D Press Sun-Bulletin Tuesday, May 26, 1992 TELEVISION Oil TV NBC hopes basketball will boost its ratings CBS revamps Monday lineup for fall TV T07IIGHT Larry Bird, and Isiah Thomas; it discovered the beauty of a perfect pass. Fresh intensity. The Pistons and Knicks showed they could win with muscles and elbows. Still, there's the elusive matter of star-power. "Cleveland could meet Utah in the NBA Finals," Costas says.

"That would be great, competitively and not as great, ratings-wise." What the casual viewer needs is a glowing star. The game suffered when Johnson retired from the NBA, because he has the HIV virus. "People like to see Magic play," Costas says, "not only because he was a great player, but because he changed the atmosphere." At the same time, however, Chicago's Michael Jordan was becoming a media event. "You have the commercial endorsements that Michael has, his winning personality," Costas says. "Here's a guy that cuts across all the lines This is a phenomenon." It is a phenomenon NBC desperately needs.

The network may be praying for the Chicago Bulls to reach the finals; it needs all the help it can get. By MIKE HUGHES Gannett News Service This is the sort of thing that Hollywood savors. It has flash and fury. It has some of the most talented humans on the planet. It is pro basketball, preparing to take over prime time.

Still, some viewers are hesitant. What do people think of the National Basketball Association? That's illustrated by NBC's play-by-play men: Growing up in New York, Marv Albert loved the pros before it was fashionable. "It lias always been my dream, from the third grade on, to do the NBA." Growing up in rural Michigan, Dick Enberg had his doubts. "(I thought) maybe it's a game where don't play as hard as you like them play, during the middle of the season Enberg says. "And maybe the last five minutes is what is important." f.

Many people felt so. The pros seemed to cruise in second gear; their games seemed on skill, short on passion. i If that's still true, NBC is in deep trouble. It needs heroes. The old heroes from Carson to Cosby are leaving.

By autumn, NBC will look five comedies and four dramas in the fall. And two of the comedies will be moved into the network's pivotal Monday lineup. They are: Love Is Hell (working title), from "Murphy Brown" creator Diane English, starring Susan Dey as an "upscale divorcee" who buys a bar and gets involved with a newspaper columnist (Jay Thomas). Hearts Afire, from Linda Bloodworth-Thomason, creator of Designing Women and Evening Shade. It stars John Ritter and Markie Post in a "romantic, politically topical" comedy about two people who work for a conservative Southern senator and share a home, but clash "in just about every way." English and Bloodworth-Thomason now will each have two shows on CBS' Monday schedule.

In addition, the network plans to rerun episodes concerning the pregnancy on Murphy Brown starting June 1 and ending with the much-talked-about birth on Sept. 7, Labor Day. By RICK DU BRCW Los Angeles Times HOLLYWOOD CBS announced an aggressive prime-time fall schedule in which it is switching two of its top hits, Designing Women and Major Dad, from Monday to Friday in an attempt to rebuild its weakest night. The No. 1 ratings network thus broke up its powerful Monday lineup, but remaining on that night will be Evening Shade, Northern Exposure' and Murphy Brown.

Joining Designing Women and Major Dad Fridays will be Bob, a new sitcom with Bob Newhart as a comic-book artist; The Golden Palace, with Betty White, Rue Mc-Clanahan and Estelle Getty, formerly of The Golden Girls, as owners of a Miami Beach hotel; and Picket Fences, about the residents of a small Wisconsin town. CBS will introduce nine new series suspiciously like a third-place network. First, however, it has a summertime sports boost. There is: The NBA playoffs. The primetime assault begins at 9 p.m.

today, with Portland and Utah. That's followed by the Chicago-Cleveland game at 9 p.m. Wednesday, with more ahead. The Olympics, with the NBA players taking a key role. For the first time, the U.S.

team will be stuffed with pros. All of this might rescue NBC if viewers learn to love the pros. They've already learned, says Bob Cos-tas, who will anchor the basketball and Olympic coverage. "The NBA, in many respects, is the hottest of all the four professional leagues." NBA ratings increased throughout the '80s, Costas says. "Last year's was the second-highest-rated final ever." Why? Reasons include: Expansion, putting pros in places that weren't jaded.

"The Utahs and the Portlands, especially," Enberg says. The new stars. Once reduced to a shooting gallery, the NBA added Magic Johnson, TODAY'S LISTINGS MAY 26, 1992 MAY 26,1992 TUESDAY LTUESDAY 2:00 3:00 2:30 3:30 12:30 1:00 1:30 4:00 4:30 11:00 11:30112:00 Ch. 8:00 1 8:30" 9:00 9:30 I 10:00 I 1fr30 7:30 7:00 Ch.
