Cartridges for the new system should be available for rental shortly after the system appears on the market here, according to Nintendo. The Super Nintendo system will have its own set of adventures, including a fourth installment in the popular Super Mario Bros, series. That may be a large incentive for Super Mario Bros, fans to get the new system. Yet, there is some question of whether the Nintendo Super System will revitalize Nintendo's popularity. Sales for the original Nintendo system seem to have peaked, and the company hopes Super Nintendo sales will make up for a projected decline in sales ofthe original eight-bit system.

"It all depends on how betrayed parents feel by Nintendo," says Tony Gervino, editor of Toy and Hobby World magazine. "And in a bad economy, 200 bucks is school clothes. But its hard to tell what will happen. "This is a bunch of grownups wondering what a 7-year-old wants," and a 7-year old can be very adamant. "Are kids dropping video games? I don't see that at all," says James Wilcox, news editor of the electronics industry weekly T.W.I.C.E.

"The novelty of video games has diminished, but it's a core business that's not going to go away. Nintendo may have a tough time but kids still tend to get what they want." And bigger and better video games appear to be high on the list. "This is definitely not the case. We have over 40 new games for both the eight-bit system and the Game-Boy set out for distribution by the end of the year." Nintendo officials hope the new system will appeal to consumers who like the higher technology in the video game market, just as compact disc players appeal to those interested in higher technology in the audio market.

Although compact discs are gaining popularity, audio cassettes are certainly not obsolete. "According to a poll of our present consumers, 70 percent were highly motivated to purchase an advanced system," said Thompson, and 16-year-old video game fan Jason Brice of Binghamton seems to agree: "I think kids are going to want it, because all their friends will have it or will be talking about it." The price for Nintendo's new system is about $200, which is twice the price of NEC's version. Possibly even more frustrating is the fact that Nintendo's new system will not be compatible with its old one. That means a fan's huge library of current Nintendo game cartridges won't work in the new system.
