They then kept him in conversation about the proposed purchase for several minutes, on the St. Charles street side of the store, and in the meantime, some person, supposed to have been an associate of the cane speculators, entered the store from Gravier street, passed, behind the counter, and took out from the still open safe two cases containing together 32 watches valued at about $1800. With this 4 booty he made his escape, and soon afterwards the two mysterious Spaniards concluded not to buy the cane and went also. It was not till Mr. S.

For neglecting to comply with the terms of this order, the Lieutenant was brought before the Recorder, and a case being made out against him, he was required to pay a fine of $25, or spend twenty four hours in the Parish Prison. When the Recorder announced this decision, the Lieutenant took occasion to make a remark which, under the circumstances, was deemed especially insulting and contemptuous, whereupon the Recorder, for the second "contempt of court," awarded an additional twenty four hours of imprisonment. This morning tne lieutenant was conveyed to prison by the Chief of Police, and we presume he will have to bide his time" there. Police Matters. Baron Recorder Stith Andrew Lenox was arraigned and held to bail in the sum of $750 to answer on the 24th inst.
