THE NORTHERN TOURNAMENT.

FJay ia the Northern Tournament waa resumaS yesterday at Old Traffrrd in presence of a much larger gathering than Assemble! on th opening day. The meeting of W. Baddalejc tb Englinh champion, and hitt bcoCh8ir B. BadfaUtft with Messrs. Ball-Greene ana Carlton in the gentlemen's doubles, and the single events, ia which H.

Baddeley, H. S. Mahouy, and F. O. Stoker were to take part, were anticipated with a good deal of interest.

These various contests wero closely watched by lovers ot thn game, among whom. tt need scarcely be said, wero many rha preliminary round in. ti-e gentlemen's singles was completed before luncheon by the meeting of C. G. Allen and H.

S. Ctirteia. The former player won tha match very easily. In the preliminary round of the i i i i. i a lauma singles Alias orosoy mob miss uerji utnu nm beat her by six games to one and even to five.

Mrs. Hill yard in the first round of tlie Sadies singles was an easy victor in a contest with Miss L. Ciiatterton-Clarke. In the afternoon Messrs. Mahony and in the second round of the gentlemen's singlss, opened play by a match which in iU later stages was very well fought and at times exciting.

Mahony ran away from hia opponent to begin with, scoring in the first set six games to one. Iy the second set Ball-Greene secured the third, fifth, and sixth games, but Mahony put the next three to his credit, and entered on the third set with a strong advantage. This set showed Ball-Greene at his best. The score was cailvd three games to one in I113 favour, and then four games to two. Mahony put in some effective work, and the score advanced to four all, five all, and six all.

With two more games for Mahony the set, and with it the match, was his by eight games, as against six. The play of the winner was altogether aumirable. Nothing could be prettier than his placing, and some of his returns when close; to the net it was quite impossible to meet. Mahony takes the fullest use of his long reach, and makes strokes which a player less finely endowed would not attempt. Frequently v-ben in difficulties he sent in a lofty return, which give him breathing time and enabled him to get a controlling position.

Ball-Greoue played well and at times brilliantly, his volleys being particuJ.mv smart, in the fuird set there was little to choose between his play anil that ot" Mahony. While this match was in progress N. Melland, of the Northern Club, was meeting H. L'addoiev, of AH-hngland. fiaddeley was the victor.

the score in his favour being 6 3, 6 2, 6 4. The-e figures, however, scarcely indicate the close character nf the struggle. In one game of the second set deuce was called no les than nine times, and in auother game in the following set it was called seven times. Between Messrs. F.

O. 3toker and T. ti. Hill in tlie first round of the singles a very interesting battle was fought, and though the latter player had to submit tc defeat, he strove well and gallantly all through. In the ladies singles there were several eood matches, but perhaps tlie best was that between Miss and Miss Cooper.

Misa Shackle plays equally well left or right nanciea, ana standing wen out sue con stantly makes use of such advantage as the change of racquec irom nanu to nanu may give her. iter opponent played a determined game, but was unable to avert defeat. Interest in the day's play was at itd height when, in the gentlemen's doubles, the anu ti. Baadeley met Messrs. and Carlton.

The Baddeleys thoroughly understood each other's play, and in this they no doubt had some advantage over their opponents. Rut their play all through was of the highest class, and they well deserved the victory they secured. One stroke' of W. ladueley, tne English champion, was amusing as well as amazing, for he sent the ball high up towards the clouds. As fortune had it, the ball let within the courts, and a line rally ensued.

Perhaps the feature of the match was the pratty volleying across the net. tlie lour ti avers being close in. i.aritou was ou occasion brilliant and at times rather rash. Ball-Greene played lively and sound tennis. Another match in the gentlemen's doubles was that between the brothers Allen and .7.

B. Thistlethwaite and U. Leiburt. Messrs. Allen had the best of the games.

At the lft monthly conference of the Lancashire and Cheshire Federation it was decided to bold their annual demonstration at South-port on the first or second isarurday in July, but the Kxecutive have since been informed that the railway companies are unable to make for any Saturday the arrangements that would be needed to convey large a number to Southport as would attend the demonstration.

The miners1 demonstration at Southport is therefore likely to be abandoned this year, but nothing further is to be definitely decided until the Federation Conference next month. R. The hopes that have for a long time liGfm expressed that Cue weather would favour the Ascot Meeting wero reaasea so iar as the opening day was concern With the sun from an almeit cloudless sky the weather ws simply perfect, the only fault that coulil be found being that th. heat was too intense, With this afternoon's nrosrrammB undoubtedly the best of the lour davs over which the meeting extends. it was not surprising to find the company a very large one in all departments, and the Royal enclosure presented the usual bright and charming scene asso ciated with it, thanks to the elegant costumes of the ladies. ThArn was nn nrvAncinn nn th miiKA. but shortly before racing commenced the Prince of Wales, who journeyed fro town by special train, arrived, accompamtjd by the Duke of York, the Duke 01 haxn- burgh, the Duke of Cambridge, and Prince Christian.

Although Major Clement had dona everything to keep the course in as good condition as possible bv artificial watprino iiic tTnrr wnm iin'iv'rL11inr Ann "thP noint ins lorts ere unavailing, antt the going was exceedingly hard, and to this tact may be ascribe 1 the abfiencn of many horses who might have met their engagements at me meeting, and noraniy amongst these was isinglass, who seemed to possess such a great chance in the Ascot Derby, bu; his owner wisely determined not to risk the chance of breaking him down on the hard going. As usual, the programme embraced seven items, and in accordance with custom the Trial Wakes, which, under its revined conditions, had obtained an excellent entry both in point of numbers and class, ushered in the proceedings For this llahna, who had scored a brace of victories at Kpsom, left off with just the call of Workington, the winner of the Kpsom Plate, whilst of the others William camu in for most support. Halma failed to tinifih the first three, and Workington won cleverly by half -a length from St. David. With Convent indulged in a walk over lor the Gold Vate, the luncheon interval was somewhat extended, and then came the Coventry dukes, tin ten runner for which ver two in excess of last year, when Mi If ord proved successful.

The colt by iiamptou Illuminata, who had won the Woodcote stakes at Epsom in such gallant iashiun. was alwavs favourite. 6 to beim? ids rdnin price, whilst van Dyck ana Arcano came in tor most support of tlie others. In the race Van Dvck had the mifortune to break a blood vessel, and ths llluminata colt won in eay fashion from liullingdon, tlie latter of whom, a son of Melton and s'hotover, was making his dchui in public. There can bo no doubt but that Lord Kusebery's unnamed colt is far and away the beast nf the "two-year-olds fiepn out thin year.

Next camo the Ascot Stakes, ami the iil'teen runners was the largest lie Id that has assembled at the ost sinca Chesterton won the race in 1878. When the wagering opened Kyes had a decided call, but gave way to riie-ssaiiari ami Knniskillen, itithyuian coming in for mot support ol the others, the race was run at pooJ pace, and on entering the straight Lauriscope tnok up the running and looked dangerous, but he was tjuicklv passed by Knniskillen and Madame d'Albany, but the latter proved a poor substitute lor Kagimunde, and Kimiskilleii made some atonement for hid defeat in the Cup, winning somewhat easily, Amongst the six runners for the Prince of Wales Stakes wa.4 Childwtck, who as a yearling cost 6,000 guineas. and tiiis was his first appearance in public. The favourite was supplied in Treasure, who ran second to Mrs. P.utterwick in the Oaks, whilst Red Ensign was a strongly fancied candidate from Middleham.

Treasure ran well, and possibly had more use been made of her she might have won, but as it was she was defeated a length by Red Ensign, a son of Paradox and Red Rag, who had only run once previously, this being in a Maiden Plate at Liverpool last November, when Tot ley beat him. by his victory Sir K. Jardiue scorfd his second success during the afternoon. On the strength of running second to Sarana in the Whitsuntide I' late at Manchester, Sempronius was backed down to 5 to 4 for the Thirty-sixth Ascot Biennial Stakes, but ran none too stoutly, and was cleverly beaten by speeu, a nome-nreu coic by iiampton uucetta, who was making hia dMut in public to-day. The day's sport concluded late with the Thirty-Dinth Triennial Stakes, which proved the good thing it was thought to be for May Duke: Details: The T1IIAL STAKE'S of 10 sovs.

While they wero talking about the matter and the prosecutrix was advising her sister-in-law not to say anything to the Sullivans the prisoner rushed out oi his brother's house, which i.s in the same court, and dealt bur a heavy blow on the head with a scraper, tell insew-ibk tn the ground, and when she recovered consciousness she l'nund her self in the Moral hitinnaiy. was detained as an in -patient for live days, and was still under medical treatment. Mr. Headiam committed the prisoner for six months, with hard labour. KoiuiKnY hy a Kaii.way Ski-vast.

Harry Withington, living at Miles Platting, who was up to the time of his arrest a goods inspector in the employ of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Company, was charged with theft. Mr. W. L. llockiu, who prosecuted, said that during the past six weeks six men and one woman had been convicted and committed for varving terms of imprisonment for participation in robberies of good in course of transit over the Lan cashire and Yorkshire Kailwaj Company's system.

It. was not tor a moment suspected, when the investigations were commenced, that the prisoner was an accomplice in these thefts. From something that Inspector M'Ohie, of the railway force, learned, he and Detective Sergeant Wilson, of the city force, visite 1 the prisoner's house on the 5th itist. On making search they found a suit of clotlm-t. which inquiries proved to have been stolen from a parcel of ready-made clothing which a Mr.

Naylor, clothier, Leeds, consigned on the 30th October last to a customer in South Wales. The prisoner was thereupon charged with having stolen the whole of the clothing, valued at 6. but in reply he said ho had only had one of the suits. Evidence was given to support Mr. Hockiu's statement, and the prisoner was committed for three months, with hard labour.

SALFORD BOROUGH COURT. ExTitAOitDiNAur Cond-'ct of a Woman. An elderly woman named Isabella Grothar was brought up in custody before Mr. Makinson. stipendiary magistrate, charged with disorderly conduct in Ulackfield Lane, Broughton.

Police Constable Mai in said that on Monday night he was called to the house of Mr. Earle, Edgemoor, Broughton, and found tlie prisoner there lving on a sofa. He was informed that she had forced her war into the house, and refused to leave until she had Peen Mr. Percy Walker. She persisted hat he lived there, and that lie was going under the name of Earle.

Witness took her out of tlie house, and she became so very violent and noisy that he took her to the police station. Prisoner told the magistrate that she went into the house to see Mr. Percy Walker, and whilst resting on tlie sofa the policeman came in, called her names, and said he should like to kill her. She wanted to see Mr. Walker because he promised her marriage.

Mr. Percy Walker, a gentleman about thirty years of a'je, stopped into the witness -lxx, and 'sa'id that in 18B7, after being abroad for some years, he returned to Manchester and took temporary apartments at the prisoner's house. Soon after he went there the prisoner adopted the system of hanging about him on every possible occasion. This annoyed him, and he complained about it. On one occasion she told him that her sister was grumbling about her staying in his sitting-room, and he told her she had the remedy in her own hands.

Then she made a long rambling statement a sort of pathetic declaration of the love she had for him. A few days after that ho left, as the prisoner repeated her extraordinary conduct. Since then he had been repeatedly annoyed by the woman. He had consulted the Chier Constable of Salford, and on that gentleman's suggestion he (Mr. Walker) sent a friend to the prisoner with a view to obtaining from her an explanation of her conduct, and she told his friend that he (Mr.

Walker) had promised her marriage. Three months later he received an intimation from a solicitor that Miss Grothar had commenced an action against him for breach of promise. Flu handed the letter to his brother, who is a solicitor, but the case collapsed, the prisoner going to his brother's office and declaring that she had given no authority for legal proceedings to be commenced Since then she had accosted him in the street. In January last she was forcibly ejected from hia house, and only on Saturday last she came to him in Victoria-street, Manchester, and by her conduct caused a crowd of peoplo to assemble The Magistrate said as the annoyance took place in Manchester he would discharge her, but advised Mr. Walker to take out a summons against her and have the case heard before Mr.

Head'am at the City Police Court. He questioned whether the woman was in her right mind, but he. warned her that if she was brought to that court for annoying Mr. Walker in Salford he would either send her to gaol or to a lunatic asylum. Prisoner was then discharged.

Singular Charge of Cruelty against a Farmer. A singular charge of cruelty was investigated at Sc. Helens Police Coutt yesterday.
