THE FRCSICO BEE SUNDAY' JANUARY 14 1940 Riga SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY GIRLS BECOME BRIDES interesting Clothes Of Friend Are Described Convalescent By Columnist Invaders' Will Attempt Landing In California By Mary Hampton Even convalescence and a bad heart seem intriguing now that I have seen Feggy'a convalescert clothes! To even see her (and I am counted with the old friends) the nurse must give a morning okeh and then they test her pulse every fifteen minutes while you wait and hope So naturally I expected a wan and wilted woman Was she? It has been a long day since I have seen as exciting a hostess! You can see I've been doing my holiday calls and as I have three times been able to say "I went to play and came away with a story!" Peggy was in a red peasant print fH Warren Prepares Test Of Loan Shark Ban SAN FRANCISCO Jan Attorney General Earl Warren as nounced today Deputy Tom Coakiey will represent the office as frisS of the court in the Roland A Fu'? test case involving the newly exacted anti loan shark law before the state supreme court in Los geles next Tuesday Fuller was arrested in Sasu Monica and in seeking relesse through habeas corpus proceedings has challenged validity of the at which Warren described today as the "greatest piece of legislation out of Sacramento In years" "If we are successful" said War rtn "we can erase a pretty black spot from the social and economic picture of California" Once the law is upheld he aii the money lenders who have been exacting from 2 to 400 per cent fcf many years "would have to go" Also next Tuesday Warren Deputy Warren Olney will appear in Los Angeles Superior Court cr posing granting of an Injunction sought by a racing service to prevent the telephone company from discontinuing service to It TACOMA Jan The Pacific Coast theoretically went to war today as a full American Army division embarked on an attempted invasion" of California in extensive joint army-navy maneuvers Every effort was made to simulate actual war conditions as troops and ships sailed to the attack defense forces concentrated and aircraft units took their stations for observation pursuit and mock bombing assignments The games for which preparations have been going on for more than a month have become known as the "Jane War" The designation comes from the official name of the maneuvers the joint army-navy exercises Sweeney Leads Attack With the embarkation of the third division the army commanded by Major General Walter Sweeney wartime secrecy was clamped on future developments Attempts were made to guard earlier details and the army refused to tell where the landing would be made saying merely it will be attempted "somewhere along the California coast between San Francisco and Santa Barbara" That's a stretch of 400 miles which theoretically would have to be protected by the defending army commanded by Brigadier General Henry Burgin But the army gave itself away by centering its defense troops on the Monterey peninsula about 100 miles south of San Francisco It is in this area somewhere between Monterey and Santa Cruz the attack was expected to come some day or night next week Has Army Of 7800 Sweeney had an army of 7500 Married recently cere: 1 Mrs Reginald Woolley of Dinuba until her marriage Miss Margaret Joyce Payne Allen Photo Dinuba) Mrs Matt Long who teas Miss Lydia Nielsen of Bowles 3 Mrs William Sherman Glick of Lindsay formerly Miss Marine Abbott Gordon Photo 4 Mrs Homer Van Deventer of Lindsay until her marriage Miss Muriel Rogers ed cotton basque and dirndl and all! The basque fitted below the waist and the fullness of the skirt sprang becomingly from there (like tew evening clothes) The hem was 'edged with purple and a rick rack of gold and her Mexican sandals had been dyed purple to match Peggy has a friend who does all this for her a costume designer who had done many of the costumes for the San Juan Bautista pageant plays which Peggy has written (and sometimes directed) for years So when the bad heart put her to bed this friend took over the personal costuming situation a gesture of love They decided that the color of peasant clothes best suited Peggy's dramatic eyes with which portrait artists have done so much at times Besides she likes the roguery of it tonic that it is to very woman! Her petticoat was a whole story in itself too It was a 1900 one row below row of lace insertion in the beautiful flounce And she has others too from that lace and handwork era And indeed there are even white batiste panties to match beading and black velvet ribbons and all! The convalescent clothes didn't stop here either There were three more costumes three skirts of the most thrilling peasant prints I have ever seen and lor these three mist length coarsely knitted sweaters in gorgeously gay purple red and such colors: The very sight of them made tingle with excitement! Of you course there was dangly jewelry and some fine Indian silver with turquoise to go with these things But my parting retreat was a glimpse at a Christmas gift It was a nightie of blue chiffon long
