Bradley, a three-time winner on the LPGA tour this year, has won $298,775 in 1986, a sum that helped her become the tour's first player to earn $2 million. The tournament is being played for the second year over the par 72, 6,478-yard Sweetwater Country Club course which serves as the LPGA headquarters. Nancy Lopez, who birdied four of the last seven holes to win last year's inaugural event, is on maternity leave after giving birth to her second daughter on May 26. The 45-year-old Palmer, once a cheerleader and homecoming queen at North Texas State University, ended a four-year slump last Sunday with a victory in the Mayflower Classic at Indianapolis. Bradley's consistency has helped her keep ahead of Juli Inkster and Mary Beth Zimmerman in the money race. It has also been a factor helping her earn $2,092,972 in 12 years on the tour. Option on Tribe CLEVELAND - Two Cleveland-area brothers who built their wealth developing shopping malls have acquired an exclusive option to buy a controlling interest in the troubled Cleveland Indians baseball franchise, the team said Wednesday. O'Neill, American League President Bobby Brown and city officials Tuesday night, and the deal was announced Wednesday morning. The deal is not likely to be completed until November, O'Neill said. "We want to assure the city of Cleveland and Indians baseball fans everywhere that it is our intention to keep the Indians in Cleveland and to be the kind of owners of which the league can be proud," the brothers said in a statement. III III - f " ' iN" 3 II lllkall v Cale Yarborough wears a winner's (mil ...he broke a record In Firecracker 400 qualifying '- Yarborough Claims Pole for Firecracker With Record Speed 1 DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) -Cale Yarborough, winning his first pole position in nearly two years, Wednesday set a qualifying record of 203.523 mph for the Pepsi Firecracker 400 NASCAR stock car race. Yarborough earned the top qualifying spot for the first time since his team switched to Ford Thunderbirds at the beginning of the 1985 season. He edged fellow Ford driver and the previous record-holder Bill Elliott for the top spot in Friday's race by just .087 mph to take his first, pole in 29 tries. Elliott Second Elliott, who set the previous mark of 201.523 - and still holds the overall track mark of 205.114 that he set in Febuary of 1985 in qualifying for the Daytona 500 - ran a fast lap of 203.436 Wednesday. "We've just been on a dry streak," said the 47-year-old Yarborough, who is third on the all-time NASCAR victory list with 83, but has yet to win this season. "I hope what happened today will turn it around for the rest of the year. I believe it will." Speeds are always a little slower in the July race because of the heat, and Wednesday was no exception, with temperatures climbing into the 90s and Daytona International Speedway sweltering under a blanket of humidity. "I'm not surprised by the speeds, considering that a lot of teams, including us, backed the cars off the truck and ran 200 miles an hour," he added. "But, considering the heat, I am surprised we ran this fast." It was the record eighth Firecracker pole for Yarborough, as well as his 12lh overall on Daytona 2.5-mile, high-banked oval. It also was the ninth Daytona pole for Waddell Wilson, the team manager and engine builder for Harry Ranier's team. Wilson has announced he is leaving at the end of the 1986 season to join a new team headed by Rick Hendrick and with three-time Winston Cup champion Darrell Wallrip as driver. "Knowing Waddell and knowing this team, I don't think knowing he is leaving at the end of the year is going to binder us whatsover," said Yarborough. "I'd be worried about not winning (this year), except we've only run eight races. If I'd have run them all and we didn't win, I'd be pretty down." Yarborough, another three-time Winston Cup winner, has been running a limited schedule for the sev t5) GS) StpeBootittr o 00 . t ' r u AP kinaaat eral years in order to spend more-time on outside business interests, and with his family. , - He was grinning widely after win-" ning the pole Wednesday. "It feels good and winning it here ' makes it feel that much better," said ". Yarborough. "This place takes brute ', speed, horsepower, to do it, and that's what happened here today." ' Four other drivers joined Yarborough and Elliott in breaking the.' previous race qualifying record. Buddy Baker's Oldsmobile Delta 88 was third fast at 202.584, followed . by Benny Parsons' Oldsmobile at 202.475, the Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS of Winston Cup point leader Dale Earnhardt at 202.129 and the Buick LeSabre of Bobby Allison at 201.708. Also over 200, but under the old r mark, were Morgan Shepherd at-201.162 and Bobby Hillin Jr., at " 201.126, both in Buicks, and the' Chevrolets of Tim Richmond and' Tommy Ellis, at 200.593 and 200.566. respectively. ' Bodine 18th . Geoff Bodine, who won the Day-r, tona 500 in February, was 18th at; 198.632, while defending Firecracker . champion Greg Sacks and defending Winston Cup champion Waltrip both - failed to make the top 20 in first-day ? qualifying. - Sacks was caught at 197.520. Wal- trip was at 194.309. Jackson Is Held In Check Again MEMPHIS, Tenn.
