6C Press Sun-Bulletin Tuesday, June 19, 1990 NY-Penn League has major-league bloodlines in dugouts By MICHAEL CAFFIN played third base for 17 seasons in the big Manny Mota. Silvestri's aged wisdom. control problems led to a 1-3 record and a 5.88 earoed-run average last season. The Jamestown Expos were supposed to feature Los Angeles Rams running back Cleve-i land Gary this season. Gary informed the club recently that he would not honor his free-agent contract.

Jamestown manager Pat Daugherty returns after a nine-year absence. Daugherty managed Jamestown between 1977-81 and spent the last nine years as a Montreal scout and coach. Daugherty's prize this season will be lefty pitcher Chris Haney, son of Milwaukee Brewers pitching coach Larry Haney. Staff Writer Pete Rose II may not be in the New York-Perm League this season, but the Class A league certainly will have plenty of ties to the major leagues. Rose, son of former Cincinnati Reds manager Pete Rose, played last season with Erie.

This season, Rose II is playing with Frederick of the Class A Carolina League. Aurelio Rodriguez heads a group of former major league players who will manage in the NY-Penn League this season. Rodriguez, who leagues, most notably with the Detroit Tigers, will manage the Tigers' NY-Penn team at Niagara Falls. Manny Mota, who batted .304 in 20 major league seasons, has four sons playing professional baseball. One of them, Andy Mota, won the NY-Penn League batting title in 1988 while playing for Auburn.

Doug Ault, who played for the original Toronto Blue Jays' team in 1977, will manage Toronto's NY-Penn team at St. Catherines. Perhaps the most intriguing figure in the NY-Penn Leape this season will not be a player or manager, but a pitching coach. Water-town Indians pitchers will be able to enjoy Ken Silvestri, 74, was a catcher in the majors from 1939-51, a career which included three seasons with the New York Yankees. His roommate in New York was no one special, just a player named Joe DiMaggio.

The Utica Blue Sox's hitting coach this season is Charlie Lau son of the late Charlie Lau, considered by many as one of baseball's great batting coaches. Converted infielder Dave Gorman, who was the opening-night starting pitcher for the White Sox's farm club last season, will once again start the season off for Utica. Gorman's Dave Cash, an infielder for four teams between 1969 and 1980, will manage the Batavia Clippers, a Philadelphia Phillies' farm team. His hitting coach is Tony Scott, former outfielder with the Houston Astros and St. Louis Cardinals.

Former Detroit and Oakland player Ricky Peters will manage the Auburn Astros. His star player could be the Astros' No. 2 draft pick Gary Mota, son of major league hitting guru 0-YAHKS SCHEDULE O-Yanks seek to continue winning tradition in NY League 1 "He (Ojala) can throw any pitch for a UCLA product Michael Hankins or Kevin 1989 standings NEW YORK-PENN LEAGUE McNmwi OMtlon Pet GB x-Pittsfleld(Mets) 52 24 .684 Oneonta (Yankees) 48 27 .640 3ft Watertown (Indians) 48 29 .623 4 Utica (White Sox) 39 39 .500 14 Geneva (Cubs) 36 39 .480 15ft r. Joining Ojala in the starting rotation will be right-hander Sam Militello, who will start Oneonta's home opener Thursday. Hillman said Militello, who pitched at the University of Tampa, knows when and where to use his slider to make an average fastball look better. "He'll (Militello) hit spots," Hillman said. "Wherever you want it, that's where it's going to be." The other left-hander in the starting five will be Rafael Cuirico, who started the season at Greensboro, another Yankees Class A team. Draft pick Ronald Frazier from Clem-son also will start, as will Darren Hodges from Ferrum, who pitches Wednesday.

Right-hander Greg Siberz will be a closer, the same role he had at Texas Caser Perez and Todd Malone will be used for middle relief. Ahden Lohry, who played at Class A Sarasota last year, will handle the bulk of the catching duties. First baseman Brian Turner will provide power from the left side. Either Jordan ot Nebraska will play second base. Shortstop Robert Eenhoorn came to Davidson College in the United States from the Netherlands.

A former Netherlands Olympic team member, Eenhoorn will start. Richard Lantrip, a draft pick from Fresno State, will start at the third base. Scott Romano, who started the season at Greensboro, will start in right field. Draft pick Robert Deller, from Hillman's home town of Arlington, Texas, will play center field. Former Pepperdine player Jalal Leach will play left field.

Hillman, who managed 14 games last season at Class A Prince William in the Carolina League, said he feels pressure to win at Oneonta. "Oneonta has been a very productive town as far as baseball," Hillman said. "It speaks strongly for the Yankees' organization. There's going to be some pressure. I'll put pressure on myself to make sure these guys learn and have fun.
