Their defensive ends came down on our quarterback and that did present some problems. "But I believe Nebraska's secondary broke on the ball better than any-body I've played against," the Leighton pass catcher said. Asked about the emotion caused by the bowl controversy of two seasons ago, Newsome quipped, "Once we got out there it was just a game, just like Alabama against Tennessee or Nebraska against Oklahoma." Asked about next week's Southeastern Conference date with Vanderbilt in Music City, USA, Rutledge only shrugged his shoulders and replied, "Well, they're good. They gave Oklahoma all they eral times like we did had to teach us something." Stretched out on the training table while Alabama trainers checked the ankle he injured on the next to last play of the game, Jeff Rutledge sadly explained his five interceptions, "I felt like there at the end I might have been hurrying my passes.

And, then on those screen passes they got I guess I should have thrown them out bounds." He ducked his head even a little lower and whispered, "That's the worst game I think I've ever played." Rutledge said the injury to his ankle, the extent of which is unknown at this time, occurred when somebody fell on it. Ozzie Newsome, who delights even the opposition's faithful with his circus catches stepped out of the shower and slowly ed relatively the Vie came back several times out there today, and that's good. They bad some big plays and we certainly had some, but as far as how good either team is right now I just don't have any ideas." Bryant suggested if he be allowed the privilege of hindsight he would have played the game differently. "It's too late now," he said, "but if I could do it over I would have played this game like I used to play 'em. I would have played a lot more people, regardless of the They dominated the third quarter and I think both of us were wearing out there at the end.

I used to play a lot more people and not get us so worn out for the final quarter." The 64-year-old coach, whose 33-year record is now 263-76-16, went on to say, "We learned some things out there today. But doggone don't aske me what But just playing Nebraska at Nebraska and coming back sev By RON BARNES 4dvertiser Sports Editor LINCOLN, Neb An obviously dejected Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant broke an unofficial Alabama record Saturday afternoon when he opened the doors to the Tide lockerroom just minutes after his No. 4 rated team had been upset by unranked Nebraska As he slumped down in a chair and took a puff of a cigarette, the veteran coach commented, "I appreciate you gentlemen coming in here, but damned if I know what you're doing in this lockerroom "We lost to a good football team today," he started, "but I like to look at it optimistically and think the time ran out on us Nebraska did a fine job on defense when they had to, but I really felt we could pull it off But then those interceptions shut us down I even thought we might be able to hit a long pass there in those final few seconds and win it Asked just how good this Nebraska team is. On the first series after Nebraska took command for the fifth time, the Tide moved deep into Corn-husker territory when Jim Pillen cut in front of Newsome, latched onto the ball for all he was worth and worked his way out to the 29. The Alabama defense stymied Nebraska, and four plays later the Tide had the ball back on its 27 after a punt. Just minutes later, however, a television replay all but sealed Alabama's fate. The pesky Pillen again cut in front of Newsome to pick off an under-thrown Rutledge pass. The Cornhuskers failed to gain 10 yards in three plays and were forced to punt once again, but this time the Tide got the ball back with 19 seconds left to play and the Nebraska goal 80 long yards away.

The game was hardly born when Alabama received what could have been its first big break of the day, a short Nebraska punt which bounced out of bounds on the Alabama 46. Rutledge's first pass of the day ended that hope. Roger Chapman's kick made it 7-3 just midway through the initial period In the waning moments of the quarter, however. Nebraska regained the lead in the see-saw contest as it marched 80 yards in nine plays, the touchdown coming on a Sorlev to-Berns seven-vard pass on a fake field goal Again the Tide reacted violently to being stung, and quickly regained the lead on a 73-yard. 12-play drive that was climaved by Tony Nathan's one-yard plunge for the score Chapman made it 14-10 It was just moments later that Tide fans got what they had been screaming for Berns fumbled and Rickey Gilliland fell on on the Alabama 41 Coach Paul Bear' Bryant surprised almost everybody, however and inserted his second team in an effort to build his lead After one first down, the drive bogged down and the Tide was forced to punt. With the aid of a Hipp 53-yard pass, the Cornhuskers then sped 80 yards for another go-ahead score Berns. who gained 128 yards and scored three TDs.

going over the top for the six points Todd's kick put it at 17-14. With time dwindling down to only a matter of seconds the first half. Chapman was good on a 27-yard field goal and the score went to 17-17 at halftime. The Tide made some offensive adjustments at halftime one of which appeared to be the elimination of the fullback Johnny Davis had pounded out 61 hard-earned yards in 10 carries the first half, but when it was all over his totals were 69 yards, 13 carries Whether it was the Nebraska defense or the Tide offense is not clear, but the wonderful talents of Newsome went to waste in the second half also. The Wizard of Oz had snagged six for 106 in the first half, but ended with eight for 132.

Nebraska took yet another lead, again" after a Rutledge interception early in the third period when they went 39 yards in two plays for the score, Berns going 22 and Curtis Craig the final 17. Todd put it at 24-17 The Tide once again stormed back to push across the equalizer, and set up the final Nebraska offensive heroics, when Nathan ended a 55-yard drive early in the final period with his second TD of the day, a one-yard dive over the top. Chapman tied the score. The bitterly disappointed Tide, 1-1, returns to SEC play next week against improved Vanderbilt in Nashville, while 1-1 Nebraska will entertain Baylor of the Southwest Conference. Benjamin's passes accounted for both Stanford touchdowns. The first was a 13-yard lob to halfback Darrin Nelson, the second a 16-yarder to flanker James Lofton. Benjamin also passed for a two-point conversion on the first touchdown. The rest of the Stanford points came on field goals of 47 and 46 yards by Ken Naber.
