SUNDAY, JUNE 19, 1983 PAGE 3A Cranston wins the votes in tiny state Democratic straw poll By TOM GARDNER delegates on their own behalf. didacy, but he said it shows there are 65 dedicated Advertiser Staff Writer California Sen. Alan Cranston walked away with a victory in a small straw poll for Democratic presiden erboat, the Gen. Richard Montgomery, sponsored by the Cranston campaign, to spread the rumor that Cranston had voted against the Tennessee-Tombigbee waterway. The project to connect the Tennessee River to the Tombigbee to the Port of Mobile will be a boon to Alabama's international trade and employment, according to its supporters.

Cranston responded in his address to the delegates. "I've always supported the Tenn-Tom and don't let anyone tell you otherwise." Asked about the dispute, Hollings said he would take Cranston's word for it. "If my people said that he opposed it, they were apparently wrong." he said. An aide to Alabama Sen. Howell Heflin said Saturday that Cranston has been a consistent supporter of the Tenn-Tom project.

Hollings told the delegates he agreed completely with Cranston's call for a bilateral and verifiable freeze on nuclear weapons with the Soviet Union. Willis, of Piedmont, got 13 votes after asking delegates to vote for him to give his campaign needed recognition. Votes received by other candidates who were represented by stand-in speakers were: Walter Mondale, Sen. John Glenn, Reubin Askew, and Gary Hart, 1. Eight delegates cast "undecided" votes.

One Elmore County delegate said before announcing his delegation's three votes that the straw poll "shouldn't be taken too seriously." Attendance at the meeting may indicate he is right. The Young Democrats are a federation of about 30 clubs scattered around the state, with about 3,000 members, according to their president, Richard Mauk. But less than 150 members from clubs in 14 of the state's 67 counties and three of its colleges showed up for the meeting. Cranston said there were not enough votes cast to indicate grass roots support in the state for his can supporters who will work in his campaign. State Rep.

Roger Dutton of Trinity, who helped Cranston get five of the six votes cast from Lawrence County, said he intends to work in Cranston's campaign and expects others who voted for him will. too. "We're building a campaign in Alabama, and while we were here, we raised some money, announced a steering committee for the state and made some other gains," Cranston said. Hollings told reporters after delivering his speech that he expected Cranston to win the poll. "They have worked hard on it," he said.

I just came in today." However, Hollings had visited the state three times in the past three weeks, sent advance organizers and brought some 15 supporters from South Carolina to work for a victory in the straw poll. Trying to make a dent in Cranston's support at the convention, Hollings' staff members and organizers took advantage of a Friday night cruise on the riv- tial uanuiuaies conauctea oy Alabama Young Democrats Saturday, but he was reserved in commenting on the significance of the win. "I'm not ready to declare myself the front-runner yet," Cranston told reporters with a grin. Last week he won a straw poll among Wisconsin Democrats. Cranston got 65 of the 124 delegate votes cast in the Alabama Doll.

Trailing a distant second was Cranston Carolina en. Ernest Hollings who polled 18 votes. Hollings and former Alabama state legislator Gerald Willis were the only candidates to appear before the Volcker renominated by Reagan WASHINGTON (AP) Reagan ended months of lLa) 3 speculation Saturday by announcing he will renominate Paul A. "He's agreed to do so, and I couldn't be more pleased," Reagan said in his weekly radio broadcast from Camp David, where he is spending the weekend. Volcker, who was first named to the post in 1979 by then-President Carter, said in New York that he was "gratified and honored by the expression of confidence by the president." In renaming Volcker, Reagan turned aside an opportunity to put his own appointee in that sensitive spot as the nation's central banker. Volcker has strong backing in business and financial circles for his efforts to bring down the inflation rate. But the Fed's anti-inflation policies also have been blamed by some for contributing to the lengthy and deep recession from which the economy is recovering. Reagan's announcement was certain to be jubilantly received in the business which had been pressing for his reappointment to what is considered by some the second most powerful job in the United States.

Arthur Levitt, chairman of the American- Stock Exchange, 1 vvel-' corned the announcement as being "in the best interests of the country's economic future." 187th Croup now a fighter group A reconnaissance group of the Alabama Air National Guard turned in its cameras for fighter wings Saturday at a ceremony at Dannelly Field. The 187th Tactical Reconnaissance Group ended 31 years of reconnaissance work to become the 187th Tactical Fighter Group. Official retirement of the colors ceremony was held Saturday before military and civilian dignitaries. In the event of hostilities, the 187th would become part of the national defense force and integrate into the regular Air Force under the total forces concept.
