CEXEWATO AND HIS COUNCILLORS, TJa correspondent of aPCape paper, writing at Pletermarltzburg, on February 16, says Pbw the disjointed. item3 which have found their way into the pubUe printa have much in common with tho story told by the two sons of Mangcondo? a Zato Induna, who were captured.a few days ago in the neiejh-bourhood ot Kranz Kop, and ore now tinder detentionas Jhey.a.tolh-atBJ,,or 6 king had received the uiumatum of the High Commissioner, a meeting of the nation was held at the inhlaballnye, and the several con-diuons were submitted for. popular consideration, touch-" Itg the payment of the cattle demands! by the Hierh Commisiionei, and.

the surrender of the Umbelrae and the men engaged in Uis Uslrayo outrage. The people thought those were matters for the' exclusive consideration of the King, thev acquiesced in the appointment of a did Cetewayo alaj-and pressed upon his acceptance the new law relating to marriage, with which the younger men were especially pleased. But tho King here put down his foot, asking whether any country coold continue independent without an army, and whether the soldierB of any. army, tha English for instance, were allowed to havo wives. "I let you marry when you are past service," eald Cetewayo, "and 1 won't let you marry white you ore children." The younger jnen did not agree with the King's view of it, when he maintained that married men were rendered cowards in battle end always avers to war through tho influBuce of their wives and chiidreas but argument was brought to an end by thB KiofSf declaration that the English were firmly bent upon war, and Stood at that moment in nrrnw NAVIGATION AND SHIPPING, The annual statement gf thenavigation and shipping of the United Kingdom for tbe year 187S wta isatteii jm--terday.

It thows that tha entries durtrig thB year wore 346.76B vessela and 63,18548 toni, an increase compared with the previous year ot 6,450 or nsaxly 2 pec cent, and 675,846 tons, or about 1 pec cent. The clear-ace a wore 310,651 vessels and tone, an increase of 7,428 veaBel3 and tone, or rather more thiQ 2 per cent. Tne increase is exclusively in British the number and tonnage of foreign veeseL) entering aod clearioff havlhij declined.1 The number of vessels entered' was aiea'and tbe tonnage i increase compared with tho previous year being 8,222 vesBi Is and 1,031,393 tons, or ovr 2 per cent in the number, and about 2 per cent in toe tonnage. Tus dearaacaa ot Briiieh veestla buow a corresponding increase, the number bting2S0.976.and being--' 8,542 ana respectively higher in tbe pre- vious year, or nearly per cent. Tho entries of fareum vessels decreased 1,772, aboatB par cent, ia number, and 405 47, or rather more than 4 per cent, in tonnage; and the clearances 2,114 in number and 174,013 in tounage, or about 3 per cent and 2 per: cent respectively.

Tnia drjcrraae in the entries aod clearances of fore'gosatpa would appear to have been' mainly in the entries and clearacc a ia the foreign trade. In that trade thera has en a decrease of entries and comparatively little increase of clearances in the aggregate, but what increase tli ere has -been has been in tiie entrits and clearances of Biitith ehtps, aod tnere baa been a material decline in the foreign chips. In the total foreign trade the entries in 1878 were C2.958 vessels and 25,293,721 tons, a decrease of nDd 327452, or 4 and 1 per ceat respectively! while clearances wore 64,486 vest-els and 26,301,358 to lb, decrease of 642, or rather more than 1 per cent, in tiv number of vesdois, but an increase of 391,454, or rather more than 1 per in the tonnage. The enttics cf BiiLish in the fotoig a' trade weio 37.225 la number. and their tonnage 17,327,733, a decrease in number of 1,051, but an increase in the tonnage of 46,399 the clearances were 37,808 vessel; a decrease of 119, and an increase of 479,177.

The entries of foreign Vessels in the foreign rade were the tonnage belug. 7,965,933, a decrease of 373,851 respectively; and tha clearances 20.67S veselsand 8,337,608 tons, a decrease ia number of 723, and in tonnage of 87,723. Tnus, alttijuga the decrtiise in number of foreign vessels' entering is less than thB decrease in -the total vessels enteting, the deer case in the foreign tonnage entering is'moru than tne decrease in the total tonnage entering. At the eame time there ib nearly as large a decrease in the number of foreign vessels clearing as there is in the total vessels clearing, while tbere is a decrease in the tonnage of foreign vessels clearing notwitDstandinp an increase in the tonnage of the total vessels clearing. Another fact which is apparent a consideration of the tables ia tbe continued increase of tha tonnage of steam vessels as contrasted with a decrease la the tonnage of Bailing vessels, especially the toonage of British ateboi vessels.

The entries of steam vesselB in the total trade of the United Kingdom last year were 128,042 in number, tbe tonnage buing these figures showing an increase cf and 1,935,300 respectively. The entries of British vessels only weie 122,702, and their tonnage 36,506,791, there being an increase compared with tbe previous year of 6,040 vessels and 1,703,230 loos. The total clearances were' 120,081 vessels-and 36,423.456 toes, and the clearances of British vessels only 114.745 and the toial increase bsln 7,070 vessels and 2,176,200 tone, and the increase In British -tnly 6,738 and 1,935,370 respectively. The total entries of steam in the foreign trade show an increase of 929 vessels and 800,136 tons (the figures for the year being 27,933 and and the British vessels an of 6tU in number and 603,309 in tonnage (the totals being 22,910 and 12,523,057 The total clearances weie 23,433 vessels and 15,528,930 tons (increase 1,308 vessels 800 1,211,503 teas); and of British vessels only 23,307. with, a tonnage of 12,912 543, these figures being 989.

and 191,377 abve those of tne preceding year. Comparing the first these figures with those cf the total shipping, it will be seenaat on re that tbe increase of of steam, vessels equale, or nearly equals, the increase of all vessels in tbe total -trade, but the increase in the steam tonnoge is far in excess ol the increase of the ogegate tonnage of sailing and steam vessels together. And of this increase Uritish vessels have almost a complete monopoly. Comparing tho second part of chess figures viz. to tbe foreign trade only not only is the fact of the actual preponderance of Biitish ehips apparent, but that here also tuBy have almost a complete monopoly of the increase.

The abstract aUo show the namber'of vessels ardmen employed in the trade, of tho United Kingdom, the number of vessels on tbe register, and the number of vessefs built for home owners in 1S7S as compared with 1377 and 1876. We again find that there Is auincreaas of tonnage employed which is' entirely an increase of steam tonnage, coupled with a decrease of the number of men employed, an increase of tonnage of vessels on the register, principally of steam about as much shipDuUd-iee in 1878 as in 1877 or 1S70. While tha amount ot shipbuilding in the aggregate is no larger in 1S7S than 1 iu j.ui tT uiq unuiu ui aicaiucio urn tuui ctuou, ill otJ there were altogether 499 steam vessels built, their agre-. gate tonnage being 237,050, as complied with '389 vcBEels of an aggregate tonnage of 221.330 in 1577, and 320 vcbfcIs of an aggregate tonnage of 123,375 in 180. 2n all wayp, then, the fact of steam ships continuing to gain upon sailing ships is apparent from tbese returns.

Mr. iff en calls attention to the fact that1 these returns are now issued, after being completely revised, more than fire months earlier than they were three years ajo. Captain Parker, of Bellevllla, Liraerlok, has baen thrown while hunting, and bo terribly kicked that his recovery is doubtful. fTHB NEW SCHOOrH03EE8 at At the weekly, meeting of the Charlton Board of Guardians yesterday, a letter was read from the Local Government Board expressing the approval of tha Board, subject to certain of tbe plans for the erection of the proposed school-homes in connection with tho workhouse at Wittungton. The schools and homos, a description of which has already' appeared in the Guardian, will be built to accommodate 300 children, and are to be under the direction and control of the Guardians, though distinct and apart from the workhouse.

The Poor-law Board, in expressing their approval of the plas, wished it to be undoratood that the Guardians were not relieved from 'the responsibility of seeing tfiat the work should ba carried out with efficiency and economy. They added that on an examination of tbe elevations of ttie proposed buildings it seemed that some expenditure could be saved by reducing the heights of some of tho roofs i and the amount of ornamentation. It was, they said, most important that money spent in- the erection of school of ihfB character sbouM be limited to what was absolutely necessary to and instruction. The Board adopted the suggested alterations, and a resolution was passed, on motion of Mr. B-ailey.

seconded by-Mr. Shaw, inviting tenders to bs sent ia for the erection of the buildings. Tbe Electbic Light. Colonel Haywooa the engineer to the City Commfcslon of Sewers, has reported lotbem on the recent experiment in lighting the Holbora Viaduct by electricity. He Btates that arrangements were made with tbe Sod ere Gt-odrale d'Klec-tricitu for lighting the Viaduct on the Jablochkoff system for three months, or from tho 14th of December to the 9th of March inclusive.

There were 16 olectric lamps in all, 15 being placed at inttrva's alternately on each Bide of tbe street and one in the centre of tho carriage way at the western end of Newgate-street The existing lamp columns had been utilised, the gas lanterns and fittings having been removed and replaced by the globes and apparatus containing the Jab- lochkoff candlas. The average distance apart of the lamps, measured diagonally, was about 110ft. each lamp lighting an area of about 333 yards superficial of public vay. Tbe electric lamps were lit from sunset until midnight. The number of gas-Umpa not lit when the electric lamp3 were burning was SO.

At midnight 61 res-lamps wcxo lit, 25 remaining unlighted owing to tbe electrical apparatus. The electric current was obtained from two Gramme machines driven by a Robev steam-engine of 20 horeeV power, and the entire machinery was contained in a temporary shed erected on vacant lane in Farrlngdon-streei. Each conductor consisted of seven insulated copper wires. They were arranged in four separate circuits of four lamps, each so placed that the four lamp 3 on each circuit could bo lit or extinguished independently of tho other groups. Tha conductors were laid in earthenware tubes beneath the public ways In the subways they were supported on narrow boards spiked to tbe walla, and the; were carried up Inside tbe lamp columns to tha In the bases of tbe columns were placed tbe commutators for changing the current from one candle to another.

Access was given to these by doors In the bases. As to cost, tho company greed to provide, fit, and fix up tbe enalne, machinery conductors, and lamps for 233. -Id. Tha Cmmftsion axrcea to provide the founds ions for the engine and ma-chinerv, the shed, and its enclosure, and to do- all the wcrk beneath the public ways, costing 267. The ga3 company agreed todedact the value of the gas not consumed wHVe the experiment wa3 beins male, suih deduction amounting, with cleaning, to 50, S.

2d. Tha wages were Z3 6s. 83., and too total cf the experiment up to the I8th of February (0 1 nigbts) was 7S5. Cs. 5d.

The 16 electric lamps were lit from Bunset to midnight, at a charge of 5 per night, averaging Feven hours. Tbe cost per lamp per hour was over and assuming them to have been lit for the remainder of the night at the same rate the cost of the whole would have been 10 per night. A as lamp on tho Viaduct, including lighting, extinguishing, and cleaning, cost 4. 17s. Od.

per It was alight 4,300 hours annually, and the cost of each lamp per hour was but little over one farthing. The coat, therefore, of lighting tha whole viaduct during the winter "months by electricity would be 14a. 3id. per hour and bj gas Is- lld. per hour, or by night of 11 hours duration, 10 by electricity and 1.

7s. ld. by ga. Applying these rates to a whole year, electric lighting would cost about gas lighting 419. Electric lighting, at present charges, was, therefore, about 7i times as deaf as gas lighting.

It was, of conree, probable that, bs a permanent arrangement, electricity would cost less than that, while there was reason, to believe that no material reduction would be made in the cost of lighting by gas. As to Uliuninating power, Colonel Hay wood est) motes approximately that 2t is obautrse ven times that of gas. The Commission hare resolved not to continue the experiment. Titus Salt of Saltaire. The Society was formed by a number of scientific and other gentlemen on the basis of the. following declaration: "We disapprove the present custom of burying thedead, and desire to substitute BornD mods which shaU rapidly reaolvB the hDoy into its component elements by a process which cannot offend the living, shall render the remains absolutely innocuous. Until Borne better method is devised, we desire to adopt that usually known as cremation.1' After receiving tie opinion of the Council that cremation was legal, in 1S75, it was proposed to erect a building, for the performance of the rite, and a large sum of money was subscribed for thB purpose. After much seeking, a piece of ground near tbe cemetery at Woking was obtained, and the' Council of the Society thcught it a suitable site.

Tho Society is not in any way trading concern, but simply a scientific society. Mr. Liddcll acknowledged -this letter on the Tth of February, and, writing again on the 21st, said that Mr. Cross desired him to point out that the system of cremation was entirely novel, and that, whether or cot tbe law forbade it altogether, tho public interest required that it should not be adopted until many matters of great social import had boon duly considered and provided for. Burial could be followed by exhumation, but cremation 'was final, and there would no longer be an opportunity for that examination which iu so many cases has led to the detection end punishment of crime.

Tha practice of ordinary burial had become interwoven with the legislative arrangements of the country, and was closely connected with various safeguards respecting death, the statistics of. death, and tbe evidence of death. Mr. Cross could not, therefore, acquiesce in the determination of the Sostoty to carry out the practice of cremation, either at their works now in pro gress at Woking or elsewhere in this country, until Parliament had authorised such a practice by either a special or a general Act. The Home Secretary further intimated that if the undertaking were persisted in it would ha his duty either to test its legality in a court of law, or to apply to Parliament for an Act to prohibit it until an opportunity arose of the whole subject.

Mr. Eassie, in acknowledging this letter, promises to cell a meeting of the Council to lay before it the Home Secretary's opinions. Thh XiAts Db. Maectjs. The following resolution was passed at a meeting of tbe Committee for conducting tho Oxford and Cambridge Local Examinations at Manchester, held at the Cathedral Library on Thursday: "This Committee takes the earliest opportunity of conveying to Mrs.

Marcus its deep sympathy with her in her sudden bereavement As the Isto Dr. Marcus was well known to many of its members from hia long and most valuable services as secretary of the Oxford Local Examinations, they tioaire to express their eense of the great loss which they sustain by his death, and gratefully? to record thelx appreciation of his intelligence and nrjral worth, of his untiring exertions in the cause cf sound education, and of the value cf his personal Death of a Fajictjs Here Anderssen, the celebrated chessplayer, professor of mathe maUcs at the University of Breslau, died in that city on the 14lh inst. Last summer, in Paris, at the doss of the international chess tournament, a banquet was held in his honour to commemorate the 60th anniversary of his hirthday. His victories over the chessboard in international and other gatherings have been very remarkable. At London, during the Exhibition of 1851, 'ho was winnor of the first prize in the international chess tournament, defeating Staunton, tho British champion; Kieaeiitzky, of Paris Lowenthol and Szsn, of Hungary; Jaenish, of Euaeia; and ten other eminent European players.

la 1882, at the tournament of the British Chess Association held at Bristol, he again secured tho first prize, as he did also at Baden, in the year 1670. In 1S73, at Vienna, and last year in Paris, he was a prize winner, on the latter occasion scoring two victories from the American champion Mackenzie, in a manner quite worthy of his 1S51 style. Throughout his long chess career he was only defeated by one opponent, Paul Morphy, the American. Ghinesk Invasion or AroiAxr. Tha Allgemeine ZeituTtg publishes a brief summary or the interesting -reports brought by tbe lost mails from the East concerning thB movements of the Chinese General Li Jungtsoy, who at the head of an army of adventurers has invaded the kingdom of Annam.

The most reliable information from Haifong confirms the bilicf that he is steadily advancing through Tjaquio, tbe northern province of the kingdom, and dally strengthening his hold upon it-Having captured the city of That Xguyen, which-lies about ISO miles north-east of Hanoi, he threatened the much stronger position of Bak Ninh, where there was a tolerably competent Governor. But, according to tho lattst news, Li had fallen back, and his farther designs were not very clear. Dak Klnh is little more thari 60 miles from Honor, while Hai-Dang, Iho head-quaTfers of the Governor General -of the province, is about 130 miles. away-to the south-east in the direction of Haifong. It is opsnly reported that this Governor General is greatly alarmed at the progress which Li has made during the last few weeks.

Letters: from Haifons-say that the Chinsae inhabitant are in favour of Li'a enterprise, and. that even th3-French win not be deeply grieved at the departure the native authoiities, so that tbe Chinese suspect them of being secretly pleased with Li's success. The general belief at Haifong is that, sooner or later, the invaders will maka their way to Hue1, capital of. Annam, which was fcrtlfied some years rig? by French engineers and that the final decision of the so-called rebellion will be fought out here, so far, at least, as such a decision can depend upon the invaders and ths Annarr.ites. It ia also believed- that should L' -ucceEd in toluDg Hu6, he has widar and mora ambitious projects, in view.

One thing is remarkable in thi3 invasion. Li pays cash for. all supplies which he takes, as if he wished to set before tbe eyes of tho people a visible specimen of the difference between hU mode or government and that of their own rulers. With respact io the attitude of the French, it is worth observing that' all their military orce.at the two stations of Hanoi and Haifong does not exceed 100 men, and that, evert should Li Beefc to injure foreien trade, tho French have scarcely any interests to protect in these quarters. Hence if the presence of the French, will not favour Li's advance against tho Annamite capital it will certainly not retard It, Up to the present Haifong haa remained free from any direct disturbance on the partof tha rebels; and since the road to Hu6 lies fully 200 miles Inland from the mouth of the river Ssnkol, where Haifong is situated, it 13 to bB hoped-tbat it may yet escape a visit from tha ptuoderiDE bands of Li or their ttiJl mora ruffianly fol, lowers.

The cry was then taken up. Tho Ene- ell nil nnl I. ouu aw naD null blllH IBSUIVC really leaving the decision in Cetowavo's own hands that tbe aBsemblage broke up. The pet pie had expected trouble of some sort from. Usiradto's outrage, but they seem never to have really apprehended an Invasion until it had commenced, and then the army was summoned to tbe King's areat place.

Tho Zulus claim to have won there a great victory, but they admit that the loss inflict ad upon their biat regiments was terribly severe. When nsked wheEbec the English- fought it is replied, They stood up until they died, the Zulu doing thB same and what more could men do?" It is stated that the colony was invaded against the positive order of the King, and Dabuhtmanzi, who led the attack on Rorke's Drift, is now in-disarnce at the King's kraal, having aggravated his principal effence by attacking a fortified post. After its victory tha army returned to Ondini, where some days were spent in talking, mourning for the dead, and distributing the spoil, which done the men were dismissed, to gather in the corps and recruit after their labours. The prisoners not only state that tbe King and the people are anxious to obtain peace, but they declare with a vigour which might convince but a diplomatist that there was never any desire for war with the English, whom they profess to like immensely, and whose institutions they are not unwilliDff to copy, provided we era content with tha position of neighbours.
