Gooden never again won 24 games as he did in 1985.

Strawberry's last monster year came in 1989, with 39 homers. There was one difference: Gooden repaired his image and re-established himself as the cornerstone of the Mets. Strawberry's career was tarnished by a series of off-field incidents: A divorce, a paternity suit, allegations of wife-beating, an IRS investigation. But in the end, the two were more alike than different when it came to their abuse problems. "An addict is an addict," said New York Yankees pitcher Steve Howe, who's been suspended seven times for drug use, after hearing about Gooden.

Mets announcer Rusty Staub, a former player, said he wasn't sure if people would be as forgiving toward Dwight and Darryl after their latest lapses. "I feel sorry for them both, but they both went back and did it a second time," Staub said Wednesday. "As much as I care about Doc and I do a great deal he made a decision. And he's the guy that has to make the decision now to straighten things out." Gooden was already facing a make-or-break season, coming off back-to-back losing years with his contract about to expire. Strawberry was a physical question mark with back problems before his substance abuse surfaced.

The Giants, desperate for an outfield bat, have offered Strawberry a shot at redemption. He isn't expected to play until after the All-Star game on July 12. Gooden will probably be a free agent this off-season. But it may be too late for either to make up for lost time. "I see both of them coming back, but coming back to what?" asked Mookie Wilson, a teammate from 1986.

"None of us come back to what we were. And in the case of these two guys, they weren't where they were when theyleft." dynasty: The New York Mets. Eight years later, the young stars who brought life to a moribund franchise are both on their own losing streaks. There was no dynasty, no more titles, and Gooden is now where Strawberry was three months ago: Sidelined by a recurring addiction that could end his career. Strawberry missed the first 2Vj months of the season after admitting to a substance abuse problem; he signed with the San Francisco Giants on June 19 after a stay at the Betty Ford Clinic.

Just nine days later, Gooden was suspended for 60 days after failing to follow his aftercare program for cocaine addiction. "No question, they are both in serious trouble," said Mets executive vice president Joe Mcllvaine, who's known both players for more than a decade. "Will Doc be with us? I don't have any answers yet." Once, the answers were in Gooden's right arm and Strawberry's lefty swing. The Mets had suffered through six straight losing seasons when Strawberry arrived in May 1983, greeted by a headline that said simply, "Straw, Save Us." Gooden came the next year, posting a remarkable 58-19 record in his first three seasons. In announcing Gooden's suspension, Mcllvaine recalled how Dwight "breathed life into the organization.

He gave us credibility." The two phenoms Gooden wearing No. 16, Strawberry No. 18 never again achieved the heights of 1986. Gooden checked into the Smithers Center for treatment of cocaine addiction in 1987. Three years later, Strawberry was in the sam? facility for alcohol rehabilitation.

Although Strawberry left the Mets in 1990, his career stayed intertwined with Gooden's. Phillies 5, Marlins 2: Danny Jackson allowed four hits over eight innings for his 10th victory and Doug Jones gained his league-leading 20th save as Philadelphia defeated visiting Florida.

Jackson (10-2) didn't allow a baserunner until Gary Sheffield singled with two out in the fourth inning. Jones pitched a perfect ninth, extending his streak of scorelsss innings to 21V). Philadelphia opened the scoring in the third when Kevin Stocker led off with a single, moved to second on Jackson's sacrifice and came home on Billy Hatcher's single. The Phillies made it 3-0 in the two-run fourth on Tony Longmire's RBI single. He later scored on a double play.

Padres 10, Rockies 4: Pinch hitters Billy Bean and Craig Shipley each delivered run-scoring hits in the seventh inning, rallying San Diego at Colorado. Trailing 3-1, Bean tied it with a pinch-hit triple, and Shipley followed one out later with a tie-breaking single. After Colorado closed to 6-4 in the eighth, the Padres added four runs in the ninth on Tony Gwynn's two-run double and Derek Bell two-run homer, his 10th. Mets' rookie waits The New York Mets-St. Louis Cardinals game was rained out, delaying the pitching debut of Mets rookie Jason Jacome.

Jacome, who was 8-4 in 14 starts for Bing-hamton in 1993, was called up from Norfolk of the International League to replace Dwight Gooden. He was 7-4 in 15 starts with a 2.63 ERA at Norfolk. The teams will play a double-header Sept 30. The Associated Press John Smoltz allowed three hits over eight innings and homered to help the Atlanta Braves end a four-game losing streak by winning, 6-2, at Montreal. Braves' Bill Pecota, subbing for Terry Pendleton at third base, knocked in three runs.

Smoltz (6-7) was nearly unhittable allowing singles in the first and fifth, and a double in the eighth. Greg McMichael pitched the ninth and allowed a run on RBI groundout by Cliff Floyd. Smoltz's third career homer, and first since 1992, opened the third against Henry (4-1). Pecota had a two-out RBI double in the fourth. Atlanta, which extended its lead in the East to IV2 over the Expos, went up 4-1 in the sixth on Pecota's two-run double.

Cubs 6, Pirates 5: Glenallen Hill's two-run bases-loaded double with two out in the ninth inning gave Chicago the 6-5 victory over visiting Pittsburgh. Hill, who had homered earlier, doubled off Mark Dewey (2-1) and drove in Rey Sanchez-and Shawon Dunston with the winning runs. Orlando Merced's three-run homer sparked a four-run seventh to tie the game and his sacrifice fly had put the Pirates ahead, 5-4, in the eighth. Astros 3, Reds Kevin Bass and Jeff Bagwell both homered in the eighth as Houston overcame a 1-0 deficit to defeat visiting Cincinnati. Bagwell hit his 25th home run of the season with one out.

Ken Caminiti singled to center and Bass followed with his third home run of the year, putting the Astros ahead 3-1. i Stsdlsr Division Pel.
