The Cavaliers, No.l in the preseason poll, boosted their record to 8-0 by winning the Suntory Ball tournament in Tokyo, beating then-No. 14 Houston and Utah.

Ralph Sampson, the Cavaliers' 7-foot-4 center, missed the Houston game because of the flu but came back with a strong effort against Utah. Kentucky held onto the No. 2 spot by attracting five first-place votes for 1,010 points. Victories over Du-quesne and Tulane in their own invitational tourney during the weekend increased the Wildcats' record to 7-0. UCLA, 5-0, climbed one notch to No.3 with 932 points by beating previously unbeaten Iowa.

Memphis State, now 7-0 after a victory over Kansas, dropped a notch to fourth place with 920 points. Indiana, tied for fifth place last week with Georgetown, took over sole possession of that spot after edging Kansas State. The 7-0 Hoosiers, who host Kentucky Wednesday night, landed 857 points. Missouri, St. John's, Alabama and Tennessee all unbeaten held the sixth through ninth spots.

Each moved up two notches, while Iowa dropped from No. 7 to 10th. Georgetown, the NCAA runner-up last season, was upset by American University last week to drop to a 6-2 record. The Hoyas now stand No. 11.

Others in the Second Ten, in order, are Arkansas, Syracuse, Louisville, North Carolina State, West Virginia, Nevada-Las Vegas, Villanova, Houston and newcomer Tulsa. Close-Out One Only! Associated Press Coach Dean Smith said his defending national champion North Carolina basketball team would miss James Worthy and Jimmy Black this season. That became evident when the Tar Heels dropped their first two games of the season and were forced into triple overtime before winning their first game. Ranked No.l in the final regular-season poll last season and pegged No. 3 in this season's preseason ratings, North Carolina dropped from the Associated Press' Top Twenty Monday.

With Worthy, the team's leading scorer and No. 2 rebounder, jumping to the Los Angeles Lakers after his junior season, and point guard Black graduating, North Carolina steadily dropped in the rankings. The Tar Heels were No. 17 last week, but lost to Tulsa 84-74 in the Oil Capital Classic before beating Pan American 106-50 to make their record 4-3. The Tar Heels were hurt by preseason injuries and are still searching for the right chemistry this season.

"But we'll continue to go with the small lineup for four minutes at the start of every game," Smith says, "until one of the young post players improves enough defensively to earn the honor of starting." Meanwhile, Virginia, which shared the Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season crown last season with North Carolina, kept a strong hold on the No. 1 spot by landing 49 of the 54 first-place votes for 1,075 points from the nationwide water level selections 329,5 I 3 UHUUUH fcMWf. jfr. it ROCKERS SOLID WOOD I STEREO CABINETS 195 69" FROM Deluxe Model Portable Dishwasher Starting at Associated Press field after the Chargers defeated the Bengals, 50-34. Koob finished his career ninth on IC's all-time rushing list with 1,402 yards and tied for seventh on the career scoring list with 108 points.

He led IC in scoring last fall with nine touchdowns and was named most improved back by the coaching staff. Pardy, a two-year starter, was a major reason IC's offense averaged 353 yards per game. IC ranked 16th nationally among Division III schools by averaging 228 yards a game on the ground. Anderson came on to be a leader on defense. He finished with 21 solo tackles and 62 total hits, good for second and fifth, respectively, on the team.

He also tied for the team lead in interceptions with three and pass knockdowns with six. Five Ithaca College football players have been named to the 1982 Sports Information Directors of America Division III All-America team. Junior linebacker Dave Stone and junior middle guard Bill Sheerin were both named second team Ail-Americans. Senior running back John Koob, senior guard Rick Pardy and junior safety Roy Anderson were honorable mention. Stone, elected a co-captain for 1983, was IC's second leading tackier with 25 solo hits and 88 total tackles.

He set a school record by blocking seven kicks (four punts and three field goal attempts). He also intercepted two passes. Sheerin was fourth in tackles with 77, including eight quarterback sacks and six tackles for lost yardage. He was selected by the Bomber coaching staff as IC's most improved lineman. In a game that "Monday Night Football" followers will talk about for years, the San Diego Chargers defeated the Cincinnati Bengals, 50-34, before more than 50,000 offense-loving fans in Jack Murphy Stadium. It was not a classic for defensive coaches, however particularly those from Cincinnati. Club records for offense fell faster than the yellow and blue streamers from the upper deck, and three NFL records were shattered. The 66 completions for both teams broke the record of 65 set in last week's San Diego-San Francisco game, and Fouts' second straight 400-yard-plus passing day was also a record. The 883 yards net passing by both teams exceeded a 20-year record by 49 yards.

Dan Fouts passed for 435 yards and the Chargers racked up 661 total yards a club record even for the most explosive offense in football and record totals against a Cincinnati defense. The figures broke marks set against Cincinnati by Daryle Lamonica (368 passing) and the Oakland Raiders 1594) in a game in the Bengals' first year, 1968. The 50 points were just one shy of the most against the Bengals, set by Buffalo in 1979. Wes Chandler also broke into both clubs' record books with his 10 catches for 260 yards and two TDs. The yardage figure broke a Charger record held by Hall of Famer Lance Alworth and broke a record against the Bengals held by Roger Carr.

Ken Anderson set club records with 40 completions 10 more than his previous high in 56 attempts. His 416 yards passing were only 31 shy of his club record set in another memorable Monday night game against Buffalo in 1975. Cris Collinsworth caught nine passes for 156 yards in the losing effort. "I'm not Bengals Coach Forrest Gregg said. "I don't like it.

But we prepared well and we practiced hard. We just got "I thought it was a good show for 'Monday Night Let's hope they got it all out of their system," said Collinsworth. "You get the feeling these two teams are going to meet again, and for the sake of pro football I hope we do." Cincinnati's chances weren't helped by a groin injury to cornerback Louis Breeden that forced him out of the game early in the second quarter. Chandler was absolu'ely unstoppable with Breeden out of the lineup To add to the wound, James Brooks became the first back to rush for 100 yards against Cincinnati this year, gaining 105 in 12 carries. The loss dropped the Bengals into a second-place tie in the AFC raee and could hurt their bid for home-field advantage in the playoffs.

The Bruins were sluggish in the early going but picked up steam at the start of the second half and never lost the lead. The Bruins ran off a 17-4 spurt opening the second half, moving ahead 55-43. The closest LSU came afterward was 62-55 with seven minutes to play. Steve Stipanovich scored 25 points to lead four Missouri players in double figures and spark the Tigers over a stubborn Tennessee-Martin team. Bobby Lee Hurt scored 25 points, including a school-record 11-of-ll on field goal attempts, to propel Alabama over Texas Southern.

Hurt, a 6-9 sophomore, hit seven field goals in the first half as the Tigers fought hard to keep up with the Crimson Tide. In other college basketball action, inside," Breuer said. "When you live by the jump shot and can't get it, it hurts you." "Five or 50, what's the difference? We got our butts kicked," said Marquette coach Hank Raymonds. "Breuer is really a great player. I think he's the most consistent player in the country," said Raymonds.

The Gophers decided the game in the first half, building a 25-point lead behind steals and their inside game. The smaller Warriors couldn't stay with Minnesota in either half. In action involving the nation's Top Twenty, third-ranked UCLA beat Louisiana State 82-68, No. 6 Missouri defeated Tennessee-Martin 71-58 and No. 8 Alabama whipped Texas Southern 88-58.

"They came in thinking about Breuer," said Minnesota coach Jim Dutcher, "then some other people took over." Breuer did wind up scoring 23 points for Minnesota, but four other players also hit double figures as the Gophers buried the Warriors 100-66 in college basketball Monday night. It was the worst defeat for Marquette since 1964, when the Warriors were beaten 100-63 by Wichita State. "Basketball games can get away from you," said Dutcher, "and this one got away from Marquette." The reason it did was Minnesota's height advantage.
