Wednesday, July 21, 1993 Press Sun-Bulletin 5C NFT. TRAINING CAMPS 3 Giants' Hampton goes home ATLANTA FIRE to await word on new contract laze tains press box From wire service reports McGriff homers as Braves win delayed game with no resolution ot his contract situation in sight, New York Giants holdout running back Rodney Hampton left New Jersey and headed for his mother's home in Houston. I'm going home because nothing's going on here," Hampton said when reached Tuesday morning. "The Giants have to take care of the guys who don't have a contract and everything seems to be moving slow. I won't be back until things get worked out." Hampton, who has emerged as one of the National Football League's top running backs since being drafted in the first round in 1990, wants to renegotiate the four-year deal he signed before his rookie season.

He is scheduled to make $425,000 in base salary this season, the final year of his contract. But after rushing for a total of varHs thp Inct turn cpacnne i JL minutes later, it appeared out. Chamberlin said the primary structural damage to the 28-year-old stadium was to beams above the box. Assistant fire chief Larry Tanner said the contents of five box suites were destroyed and a sixth was heavily damaged. Braves president Stan Kasten said 2,000 seats could not be used.

The scoreboard and lights operated, but not the public-address system. The team was able to broadcast the game on television and radio. Media members were shifted from the pressbox to an adjacent section in the stands. The fire apparently started in a suite rented by radio station WGST on the third-base side of the press level. Matt Stewart of WGST said no one was in the suite when the fire started at 5:55 p.m.

McGwire was taking indoor batting practice when a security guard ordered him to leave. "What a start!" he said. ATLANTA (AP) Fire swept through a section of Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium on Tuesday, sending fans and players scurrying for safety as black smoke poured from the burning press box. The fire in the stadium's middle level started 90 minutes before the Atlanta Braves were to play the St. Louis Cardinals and was put out 45 minutes after it began.

One firefighter was taken to a hospital suffering from heat exhaustion and as many as 10 others were treated on the scene for heat related problems. Remarkably, no other injuries were reported. "I couldn't believe it," said Braves outfielder Otis Nixon, who was in the dugout at the time. "I just looked up and there was this fire. Then everybody just took off.

It was like a 60-yard dash to the outfield. I never saw Bobby (Cox, the Braves manager) run so fast." A crowd of more than 40,000 was expected, and the few hundred fans who arrived early for the 7:40 p.m. start were evacuated. While Braves management and fire officials decided whether the game could be played safely, fans milled outside the stadium. Finally, the game began at 9:38 p.m.

The Braves rallied to an 8-5 victory from a 5-0 deficit in the sixth inning. David Justice scored the go-ahead run in the eighth. He scored from second when Rheal Cormier (5-6) bobbled Terry Pendleton's sacrifice bunt and threw wildly to first. Justice had opened the inning with a single and took second when right fielder Mark Whiten fumbled the ball. Fred McGriff hit a two-run homer in his Atlanta debut.

He was acquired from San Diego on Monday. Atlanta fire chief David Cham-berlin said the pregame fire apparently started with a "sterno heating unit" in a radio booth. The fire burned 25 minutes before firefighters could get close enough to pour water on it. Twenty and 54 touchdowns in six seasons with Green Bay, signed a one-year contract with the Indianapolis Colts general manager Jim Irsay said. Terms of the deal weren't disclosed, but reports indicated it was for less than $1 million, down from the $1.7 million he received from the Packers last season.

The signing of Majkowski was prompted by the absence from training camp of starting quarterback Jeff George, who still hasn't said why he didn't report to camp last week. He owes $24,000 in fines at the rate of $4,000 a day. Bengals: Signed tight end Tony McGee, a second-round pick from Michigan. Bills: John Parrella doesn't figure to go AWOL again. His father wouldn't hear of it.

Parrella, the Buffalo Bills' second-round draft pick, said he decided a day earlier to go home to Grand Island, to see his father, who has a history of heart problems. Parrella said he phoned home from Toledo, Ohio about 3'2 hours from the Bills' camp at Fredonia to see how his father was doing. That was the end of the trip. "I'm not going to say on the air what he said to me," said Parrella, a defensive lineman from Nebraska. "He's probably not the first guy to leave training camp and come back," said Bills coach Marv Levy, who would not say how Parrella would be disciplined.

Dolphins: Miami, which waived Mark Duper because of a surplus of receivers, is suddenly not so deep at the position. On Sunday, the day before training camp opened, receiver Mike Williams broke a finger in a bicycle accident. On Tuesday, Irving Fryar went down with a strained knee. He is expected to miss up to two weeks. 49ers: Harry Sydney, who hadn't started a game in five seasons but was an integral part of the club as special teams captain and a reserve fullback, announced his retirement.

Packers: Mark Clayton, three other wide receivers and a tight end have been slowed by injuries. Clayton pulled a hamstring. Jack Milling injured his left leg and sustained a concussion. Wideout Louis Clark hurt his hip and Chris Holder, dislocated his thumb. Ed West, who has more experience than the other three reserve tight ends combined, "got a crack on the ankle," coach Mike Holmgren said.

METS' BOX SCORE Rodney anfj earning his first Pro Bowl trip Hampton iast February, Hampton thinks he deserves more. A lot more. "Not to be cocky, (but) if you look at the top 10 running backs in the league, I deserve to be paid more than what's left on my contract," he said. "My agent (Ralph Cindrich) has been talking to the Giants about this the whole summer. I didn't think it would have to come down to (a holdout)." Neither did the Giants.

"I told his agent six weeks ago that when we were done with the players who didn't have a contract that I was willing to talk to him," general manager George Young said. "But we had no indication (a holdout) would happen. (Hampton) is under contract and now he's in violation of that contract and that makes things difficult." How much money Hampton wants is uncertain, but a good guess is about $1,533 million, the average yearly salary of the 10 highest-paid running backs in the NFL. He was the fifth-leading rusher last year with 1,141 yards and was second in rushing touchdowns with 14. FOX Sports Editor Bryan Rogers is arguably the quietest player in the Binghamton Mets clubhouse, so it's in character that he's silently moved down to the team earned-run lead. "I've just been consistent of late, staying focused and just letting (the ball) go," Rogers said after his two-inning dutiy saved Tuesday's 5-2 victory over visiting Reading. It was his eighth July appearance each without being charged with a run. "Early in the year, I was just trying to find a fine line sometimes too fine, possibly," Rogers said.

July appearances have chopped his ERA to 2.69. Teammate Denny Harriger's 2.85 is listed in Howe Sportsdata International's as the stcond best in the Eastern League. Not second best to Rogers, however. A minimum 73 innings is the stat people's current requirement to qualify and Rogers has only 60 Vj despite his 44 appearances being 16 more than any teammate and second most in the league. During the 10Vj July innings, the opponents' totals are two hits and two walks.

One of each occurred with two out in the eighth inning Tuesday, prompting pitching coach Randy Niemann's saunter to the mound. "All Nemo said was to just stay focused and stay within myself, Rogers said in his usual hushed tones. On the next pitch, his sinker induced an inning-ending grounder. Last year, coming off spinal surgery, Rogers had a 4.33 ERA in 22 Binghamton games before finishing the season with 2.93 in 17 games at Class A St. Lucie.

Tuesday's winning pitcher, Jason "Hawk" Jacome, pleased Niemann and manager Steve Swisher by needing only 70 pitches in the first STEDLER DIVISION Binghamton seventh (4k Zinter Pet GB double by Steve Hujar. Jon Andrej-ko then hit a hard grounder to first base and Guccia beat the throw home to tie the game. Steve Kalka's single up the middle scored Hujar from third with the game-winner. Bob Farrell hit a two-run homer in the fifth for Johnson City. The two teams meet again at 6 tonight at Green Field.

Vestal needs a win to force a deciding third game on Thursday, If Johnson City wins tonight, it plays Windsor on Thurs-day for the Broome County championship. Vestal vs. JC in Dist. 7 Fans from Vestal and Johnson City will have a tough time deciding which game they'll watch tonight as the two American Legion teams meet at Green Field, while just over 100 yards away the little league teams will be playing for the District 7 championship. Vestal's come-from-behind 10-9 win over Maine at Maine Little League Field, moved Vestal into the finals of the double-elimination District 7 tournament at 6 tonight.

Winning pitcher John Coleman had the winning hit for Vestal in the top of the sixth inning, scoring Tony Berube from second base. Vestal scored four times in the sixth. Vestal battled back from 8-1 and 9-3 deficits to win the game. Maine's T.J. Furney had a two-run homer and Vestal's Henry Blan-chard and Larry Park also hit two-run shots.

If Vestal wins tonight's game against JC, the two teams go at it again Thursday at a site to be determined. Rangers gain split Jake Biscoglio struck out three straight batters with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 12th inning and the Broome Rangers defeated Ithaca, 4-2, in 13 innings in the completion of a suspended Northeastern Collegiate Baseball League game at Ithaca. Ithaca won the regularly scheduled game 3-0. The suspended game, from June 10th, was restarted at the top of the 1 1th inning with the score 2-2. Ithaca loaded the bases with none out in the 12th of the suspended game and the No.

Steve Burwinkle pitched a three-hitter for Ithaca (18-20) in the second game. For the second straight game, Scott Landers had the winning hit for Windsor Post 571, as it swept a best-of-three series from Post 1700 Blues on Tuesday in the Broome County American Legion playoffs at Windsor Middle School.

Landers double to left-center field in the fifth inning brought home Tommy Lee and Chris Snov-er to break a 1-1 tie. Windsor, the Division II runner-up, won Monday's game 2-1 in eight innings when Landers scored Chris Snover from third base with an RBI groundout. Landers drove in all three runs for Windsor on Tuesday. Jay Wormuth went the distance for Windsor, throwing a three-hitter with seven strikeouts and one walk. Randy Morey struck out six and didn't allow a walk for Post 1700 Blues.

Lucie (in mid-June)," Niemann said. He missed combining in a third shutout when he served a third-inning, two-run home run pitch to Dave Tokheim after pitching counterpart Darrell Goedhart singled. "I was a little bit flustered because the pitcher had just got a hit on a ball that I had in my glove but couldn't keep hold of," Jacome said. Mets pitchers were relieved not to face Gene Schall, who'd ripped three home runs in Mondy's double-header. Schall will report to Class AAA Scranton-Wilkes-Barre today, and Reading manager Don McCormack cautiously left him on the bench.

"If he's going to get hurt, let him get hurt in Triple-A," McCormack said. Butch Huskey's 17th home run of the season ties him for third in the league, one behind teammate Alan Zinter. Huskey joins Zinter in breaking the last season's club record of 16 set by Zinter.
