Visitors are kept off the set because Reiner wants to keep the project classified. By MARILYN BECK I HOLLYWOOD If "Thieves" doesn't steal away a big portion of the movie-going audience when it opens next month, it won't be from lack of effort by Mario Thomas. Thomas, who carries over her role as star of the Herb Gardner comedy from Broadway to Paramount pictures, has pushed back shooting of an ABC-TV movie (in which she will serve as producer and lead performer) to go on a 3'fe-week, 14-city promotional tour.

"And I want to do all I can to spread the word about i Actually, if word-of-mouth does as much for the movie (which co-stars Charles Grodin) as it did for the play, Thomas should have nothing to worry about. The birth of the theatrical version of the play was so traumatic that when it survived, it came to be regarded as the miracle of Broadway. For the show, starring Valerie Harper, had closed during its Boston tryouts.

And by the time Thomas was hired to take over, and a new producer and director were hired, news of its disaster preceded it to Broadway. Theater parties had been canceled, "obit" notices written in papers, and a sign hung at the Broadhurst Theater where it was opening: "Sorry, 'Thieves' closed out of town." It opened in spite of such odds, and word-of-mouth about Thomas and the bright, sophisticated material about life in the Manhattan jungles eventually helped "Thieves" to become an unqualified hit of the 1974 season. With luck and a lot of promotional effort could hit the jackpot again. Though industry insiders have doubts about how much longer "The McLean Stevenson Show" can avoid the ax, co-star of the ailing NBC series, Barbara Stuart, says the company continues to be optimistic especially now that the show has received a last-minute executioner's pardon. "We were actually in the midst of holding our swan song party last week," said Stuart, "when word came in that the network had changed its mind about cancelling the show, You would have expected us to start jumping up and down with excitement, but we all just sat there probably because we'd all been through so much, we just couldn't get emotional about it any more." i John Denver and manager Jerry Weintraub are hosting a belated birthday party for George Burns (who turned 81 Jan.
