The boil water advisory is expected to continue until Thursday, said Robert A.

Croker, director of water quality for American Water Works Service Company in Hershey, Pa. Boiling the water for at least one minute before cooking or drinking will kill any bacteria in the water, Croker said. "This is a serious enough potential situation that we can't take it lightly. We want to take a conservative approach," Croker said. ervoirs serving the Hallstead system, Croker said. The turbidity, or particles of sediment in the runoff, interfere with the water purification process because the bacteria attach themselves to the particles. The particles shield the bacteria and make it difficult for chlorine to disinfect the water, Croker said. The low levels of the reservoirs contributed to the turbidity situation, which he said happens "once in a blue moon," Croker said. The Hallstead system was the only Pennsylvania American Water Company system affected.

Croker said the company would increase chlorination levels and run bacte-riologial analyses of the reservoirs. Croker said drinking the water without boiling it might cause "gastrointestinal" problems. The company started drilling wells two years ago for an alternate water supply for the Hallstead system, Croker said. Although runoff would have little effect on well water, the company has had difficulty finding well sites, Croker said. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources could not be reached for comment.
