He's a good fighter." Oliver, who has won the New England tournament the last two years, said the time is right to end his amateur days. "The amateurs are dead," he said. 'It's boring. This year, EA put it all together. Though still lacking a challenging and indepth franchise mode, the game looks gorgeous and plays better than it has in years. There are enough options to keep a player interested and the game is supported well on the Internet with updated rosters from independent sites. What really sets it apart from its predecessors, though, and should be a flag to other developers even those within the EA group is a set of AI sliders that really work and an adjustment on the speed burst control. You can fine-tune the difficulty levels with these tools.

They should be a part of almost any sports game released. "PGA 2000 developed by Headgate, showed it was possible to produce a mouse swing that felt natural and functioned in real time. In fact it worked so well, it has many cybergolfers abandoning the tried-and-true click methods, still dominant in the sport's other major titles, "Links" and "Jack Nick-laus." The game is a notch below other titles but certainly acceptable in the graphics department even the nearly 3-year-old "Jack Nicklaus 6" looks better. Still, it is quickly developing the same kind of Internet support "Nicklaus" has, with an abundance of free user-created courses, thanks to its fluid and powerful course designer as part of the package. Internet play is also strong and a career mode of sorts you can string the fourth Hartford Courant PC sports writers' poll "NHL 2001" edged 'TGA 2000" mest margin in the history 143-141; "Sammy Sosa High by ball 2001" was third with 130.

TGA 2000" actually garnered more first-place votes with four to "NHL's" two in the poll of nine writers from gaming magazines and Internet sports gaming sites. Other titles with first-place votes included "High Heat 2001," Microsoft's 'links 2001," which tied for fourth, and Geoff Crammond's "Grand Prix 3" (tied seventh), each with one. "Grand Prix 3" tied its brethren for seventh and Interplay's "Virtual Pool 3," complete with the Black Widow, Jean-nette Lee, rounds out the Top 10. Text simulations didn't fare well this year with "Front Office Football 2001" (EA) and "Championship Manager 00 01" (Eidos) just rnissing the Top 10 at 11 and 12, and the exquisite "Diamond Mind Baseball 8" (Diamond Mind, now in a Windows platform, placing 17th. the highest spot for a small tournament seasons together adds to the proceedings.

Unfortunately Head-gate has moved on to EA Sports to work on the "Tiger Woods" series, so the fu-ture is uncertain for this highly regarded game. EA placed four titles in the Top 10 with "Madden NFL 2001" tied for fourth, "FIFA 2001" sixth and in ninth the extraordinary "Superbike 2001," one of a number of fine racing games from the publishing giant "NASCAR HEAT," Hasbro's companion release to The "NHL" series really for Electronic Arts in the back on the Genesis brought PC sports into the age of 3-D video graphics.
