And one of the articles, written by novelist-producer David Levy, a former NBC vice president, deals with censorship, politics and the new comedy.

A moderate man, Levy notes that "what today's generation finds refreshing, challenging, and irreverent these days on television, an older one sometimes finds sophomoric, cliche, old hat. If there is one human characteristic on which all generations tend to agree it is that each generation must relive the experiences of past generations." Mentioning such shows as "Laugh-In" and the canceled Smothers Brothers hour, Levy points out that vast political and social satire has gone before: "the debunking of pretentious quacks and the deflation of pompous Colonel Blimps; the pointed ridicule and sharp jibes that reveal the sometime amorality, venality, and cupidity of elements of big business, of Congress, of the professions." He lists such popular satirists as H. L. Mecken, George Bernard Shaw, Will Rogers, Henry Morgan, Oscar Levant, Fred Allen, Sid Caesar, Jack Paar, Steve Allen and the cast of NBC- TV's "That Was The Week That Was." Levy recalls how "CBS, in a shrewd analysis of its Sunday night 'schedule, slotted the Smothers Brothers opposite 'Bonanza," a program in which the virtues and the moralities of traditional America have been symbolized by the character and homilies of the for nine years Their success helped prompt NBC; to launch 'Laugh-In' against another of the symbols fo middle-class life, ''Lucille Ball." Asking why the Brothers later slipped in the ratings, Levy says: "Their decline may have been a result of the difficulty of doing topical humor with a heavy emphasis on politics; it is the kind of comedy that is vulnerable by the very fact of its topicality. It tends to become repetitious.

"It tends also to require constantly escalating barbs which can alienate viewers as well as induce tighter editorial scrutiny on the part of the advertisers and networks." Levy goes on: "The decline of the Smothers Brothers may be, in part, due not only to the formidable competition of but also the emergence of which managed to savor everything the brothers had to offer plus a lot more by the flashy style of its presentation. "Not only does the speed of its form allow for much more comedic material, but that very speed itself guarantees more freedom, since something that can flash by in seconds can.be more acceptable to censors and public than the same subject handled in a longer routine." Levy notes that the impact of social and political humor "has within it the seeds of a dangerous boomerang.
