2B NFL REPORT Montgomery Advertiser Tuesday, Nov. 2, 1999 NFL NOTEBOOK First win drops into Cleveland's hands Aikman undergoing MRI today miHnnint when he accounted (FUTi The Associated Press IRVING, Texas Although the Dallas Cowboys aren't saying that quarterback Troy Aikman had a concussion, he's undergoing an MRI on today to make sure there was no damage caused by a blow to the head. "It's a precautionary thing given his history with previous head injuries," trainer Jim Maurer said. "We don't anticipate anything being wrong." Indianapolis cornerback Jeff Burris rammed his helmet into Aikman's on a sack early in the fourth quarter of the Colts' 34-24 victory Sunday. Aikman sat out one series, sniffed some smelling salts, then returned.

Jags' offensive line banged up: Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Mark Brunell and running back Fred Taylor are getting healthy. Their blockers haven't been so for tunate. Starting right guard Rich Tylski fractured his right foot Sunday against Cincinnati and will be out 4-6 weeks. Left tackle Tony Bo-selli came to the locker room Monday in a stabilizing boot for 'a sprained right ankle, and is day-to-day. Dolphins guard out for season: Miami Dolphins backup guard John Bock will miss the rest of the season because of a knee injury.

Bock, who played in all seven games this season, tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee Sunday in a 16-9 victory over Oakland, and will require surgery. Carter catching on: Cris Carter is savoring all of Randy Moss' double teams. Carter carried Minnesota back to .500 at the season's for nearly half his team's op' fense in the Vikings' 23-20- squeaker over the Denver Broncos on Sunday. Carter had eight receptions for 144 yards, including five for 87 yards in the fourth' quarter, and two TDs. Bengals fans get trashy: Coach Bruce Coslet said fans were wrong to throw garbage and swear at him as" he left the field following the Cincinnati Bengals' loss.

An apple core and plastic cup were among the objects tossed his way as Coslet headed toward the locker room following Sunday's 41-10 loss to Jacksonville. A few dozen congregated in jt the seats near the locker room entrance to vent their frustrations as the team ran-off the field. The Associated Press calling it. "That will go down with all the other famous plays they've had here over the years," Chris Palmer said of the play, which also gave him his first NFL victory as head coach. The expansion Browns got their first victory since returning to the NFL with a Tim Couch-to-Johnson touchdown pass on the final play that nearly 24 hours later still had Johnson shaking his head.

"The ball was so high and I just ran into the end zone and saw all three guys jump," said the rookie wide receiver. "It's just a miracle. The ball just fell right into my hands." Johnson's catch gave the Browns a 21-16 win, triggering a wild celebration on the field and 1,000 miles away in Cleveland. The Associated Press CLEVELAND Kevin Johnson still can't believe it happened. Neither can Cleveland fans who remember seeing the old Browns lose heartbreaking games like this all too often.

But in New Orleans on Sunday, a "miracle" fell from below the Louisiana Super-dome's ceiling and into Johnson's hands. A play called "258 Flood Tip" forever became a part of Browns football lore. Finally, a city still feeling the pain of Brian Sipe's playoff interception Right and Denver's two AFC championship game wins Drive" and "The in the 1980s, had a play it could watch over and over again. The Play, they're already Cleveland Browns receiver Kevin Johnson (85) catches a 56-yard touchdown pass as time expired to give the Browns their first win of the season. kissed a bald male media member on the head and hugged anyone within reach.

Saints coach Mike Ditka, whose team gave up a similar "Hail Mary" play a week earlier to the New York Giants, fell flat on his face in disbelief. As the Browns piled on top of Johnson in the end zone, Palmer raced frantically across the field, seeming to hug a different assistant with each stride. In the opposite end zone, Dwight Clark, Cleveland's director of football operations, SCOREBOARD UPCOMING EVENTS Sports briefing READERS SOUND OFF! The Hawks departed Monday for tonight's season-opening game in Washington the Wizards. When Rider was a day late reporting to training camp, he blamed it on the plane he was scheduled to fly from Oakland, Calif. He said he went to the airport gate after a short layover and saw a commuter jet he called a "crop-duster plane" and refused to get on. Atlanta Hawks forward LaPhonso Ellis will start the season on the injured list. Ellis injured his left caff; during training camp and reaggravated it last week, Hawks spokesman Arthur Triche said on Monday.
