Montgomery Academy and St. Jude also made the tournament in 1998.

Each team will participate in pool play on Thursday with the top two teams in each pool advancing to single elimination play on Friday. The two remaining teams from Friday's play will play for the championship on Saturday. The Lady Pirates, who won their region by defeating Isabella last Saturday, will open at 8 a.m. against Holy Spirit and follow with Westminster Christian at 10 a.m. and finish with Donoho at 12:50 p.m.

The Lady Knights fell to Al- Poets come out on top, a possible 7-3 finish will not be good enough. "I guess I'd be lying if I said we wouldn't be thinking about what happened but all we're trying to do is tell them this could be their last game, to go out and play hard," Clark said. Even with the tension of trying to secure a spot in the playoffs, coaches and players are at least happy to be in position to play another week. "I'm just glad to have a chance to play for (a playoff spot)," Fuller said. "A lot of folks don't have that." Three city teams make state volleyball title bid: Three Montgomery teams will battle for state volleyball championships this weekend.

St. Jude (Class 1A), Catholic By A.A.Moore Montgomery Advertiser i Heading into the final week of the high school football regular season, most teams from the tri-county area that are making the trip to the postseason will use the final week to rest (Jeff Davis has off week) or fine-tune for what hopes to be a championship in six weeks. Just do not tell that to Sidney Lanier, Stanhope El- 'more, Prattville, Elmore County and Autaugaville. Each of these teams will ei- ther play for their season Friday night or be dependent on some help from others. Win, and play on.

Lose, and go home. i "When you control your own destiny, you have noth 1-1 in 1A, Area 6) and Elmore County (3-6, 1-1 in 4A, Area 5) all need wins to make the playoffs. The Mustangs, who host Charles Henderson, would go in as an area champion while the Eagles (at Isabella) and Panthers (at Cen-tral-Hayneville) would get in as area runner's-up. The team that could be in the worst predicament is Prattville. The Lions, at 6-3, play host to Wetumpka but will have their attention on the Lanier-Lee game in Montgomery.

"We're going to try and concentrate on Wetumpka," Prattville coach Bill Clark said. "We don't want to go into the playoffs on a negative." A win for the Generals is a win for the Lions, who would be the area runner's up. If the ing to do but control it," Lanier coach Robert Fuller said. "It might be a motivating factor for our kids but whatever we do has to be good." The Poets (5-4, 0-1 in Class 6A, Area 6) own the tiebreaker in a three-way tie between themselves, Robert E. Lee and Prattville but need a win over the Generals to force the tiebreaker and win the area.

No matter what happens against Lanier, Lee (4-5, 1-0) will make the playoffs but a loss puts the Generals on the road, which Fuller said no team wants to do come playoff time. "To host a game is a motivating factor so I'm sure they'll come out fighting," Fuller said of the Generals. Darrell Armstrong and Matt Harpring scored 14 points apiece for Orlando, and Bo Outlaw added 10 points and nine rebounds. Cedric Ceballos chipped in with 19 points and 10 rebounds for Dallas. Michigan State guard Mateen Cleaves, the only returning All-America from last season, suffered a stress fracture in his right foot and will be our eight to 10 weeks, coach Tom Izzo announced Monday.

Cleaves underwent a bone graft and had a pin inserted during surgery Monday evening, Dr. Herbert Ross said. Temple guard Ronald Blackshear has been declared ineligible to participate in the 1999-00 season, school officials said Monday. Coach John Chaney said Blackshear was initially cleared to play by the NCAA but based on a new test score is now considered a non-qualifier. Chaney said Blackshear agreed to retake the SAT after his first score was challenged, and was declared ineligible as a result of the retest.

FOOTBALL Martin named Player of the Week Tennessee quarterback Tee Martin, who rushed for two touchdowns and threw for another in the Volunteers' win over Alabama, was named the Southeastern Conference offensive player of the week Monday. Relatives of former NFL linebacker Demetrius DuBose filed a wrongful death lawsuit Monday against the city and two police officers, claiming excessive force was used when he was shot and killed during an arrest attempt. The federal civil rights lawsuit, filed in San Diego's U.S. District Court, seeks no specific damages for the July 24 shooting death, which has led to a series of protest marches and accusations of racial bias against the San Diego Police Department. DuBose, who was black, was shot 11 times after he scuffled with two white officers who suspected him of burglarizing a Mission Beach home.

San Diego Chargers defensive end Chris Mims was charged with four misdemeanors Monday in an alleged attack on a man outside a fast food restaurant last month. The City Attorney's office charged Mims with assault with a deadly weapon, battery, petty theft and urinating in public. His arraignment was set for Nov. 19. Michael J.

McKin-ney, 23, told police that Mims attacked him early on the morning of Sept. 27, some 10 hours after the Chargers lost their home opener to Indianapolis. McKinney said the 300-pound Mims shoved his face into a wall, stole his tacos and struck him twice with a belt. A military audit released Monday faults the U.S. Air Force Academy's athletic association for spending more than $81,000 on "unauthorized expenses" such as babysitting, golf fees and theater tickets for coaches and their spouses during the 1997-98 school year.

In their written response included with the audit, officials at the Colorado Springs academy said such spending did not violate NCAA rules and was for "quality of life" expenses commonly paid by other top college sports programs.
