Urn. got them there. Lange, a fj-foot-3, 265-pound linebacker, intercepted Carney at the Yale 24 and lumbered to a 58-yard return before he was caught from behind.

'Tve been dreaming about that since I was 5," Lange said. "He looked right at me and threw the ball. I just wanted to see how far I could run before some little guy caught me. It turned out to be nearly 60 yards." Schulze's 1-yard run early in the second quarter put Yale ahead 20-7, and Justin Davis' career-long, 40-yard field goal gave the Bulldogs a 23-14 lead at the half. After Fordham got within 29-27, the Yale offense controlled the ball on two time-consuming drives in the fourth quarter, and the defense made its big stand.

"We took control of the game by running the clock out," Siedlecki said. "We just ran the ball. We made the big plays that win games. Cody Cargill made three or four big runs in the fourth quarter. Cody Cargill wasn't even on the depth chart at the start of the season.

"It was a tremendous way to end the game." put the Rams in position for another touchdown and a fake punt led to another. And even that third-quarter touchdown was strange. Mark Carney's 7-yard pass into the end zone was tipped by cornerback Ray Littleton, but the ball bounced to Fordham running back Alemayo Whyte for an easy score. Carney's pass for a two-point conversion fell incomplete, and Yale went into the fourth quarter with a 29-27 lead. The Rams (2-3) had only one other opportunity to score, and Yale ended that bid with a defensive stand at its 14-yard line with 5:26 left.

By then, Yale led 36-27 on Schulze's 2-yard run. "The game was decided by the Yale offensive line when it won the battle of the trenches against our defensive line," Fordham coach Dave Clawson said. "They kept moving down the field. Their ability to control the tempo and the line of scrimmage was the key." A seven-play, 57-yard drive got Yale started, culminating in Hy-land's 25-yard touchdown pass to Keith Reams to tie it at 7. Schulze's 4-yard run gave the Bulldogs the lead for good, but it was Jason Lange's big defensive play that ASSOCIATED PRESS INJURED MOST of the season, Yale's Jay Schulze carries for a career-high 152 yards and scores touchdowns of 4, 1 and 2 yards.

Saturday 27 Brown 35, Princeton 24: Michael Malan (31 carries, 208 yards) became the first player in Brown history to run for more than 200 yards in consecutive games and scored two fourth-quarter TDs as the Bears overcame a 16-14 deficit. Harvard 26, Cornell 6: Nick Palazzo scored on 8- and 5-yard runs as Harvard opened 4-0 for the first time since 1980. Holy Cross 49, Dartmouth 17: Brian Hall completed 13 of 16 passes for 158 yards and five touchdowns and David Thompson caught three TDs for Holy Cross. Dartmouth lost quarterback Greg Smith in the first quarter because of a broken finger on his throwing hand. Penn 35, Columbia 7: Kris Ryan gained 126 yards in 18 carries as Penn extended its winning streak to eight.

Hyland waited two years. With illness and injury scrambling Yale's lineup, Schulze ran for three touchdowns and Hyland threw for one as the Bulldogs outlasted Fordham 36-27 Saturday before 18,580 in Yale Bowl. Schulze, a junior, hadn't played since injuring an ankle in the season opener. His three touchdowns matched his total of the previous two years. Hyland, a senior, hadn't thrown a pass since the 1999 season.

He passed for 194 yards, hitting 20 of 28, with three-interceptions. "Our players buy into our system," Yale coach Jack Siedlecki said. "When they get an opportunity to play, they're prepared." Schulze (30 carries, 152 yards) had to shoulder the bulk of the and did the job." It was a strange game, perhaps a lot closer than it should have been for Yale (3-1), still recovering from its loss to Dartmouth and waiting to return to the Ivy League race next Saturday at unbeaten Penn. Even Fordham's four touchdowns were odd. A pair of Dan McGrath interceptions led to two scores, a quarterback sack and poor Yale punt running game when Pat Bydume reinjured his foot and Robert Carr was still hobbled by a groin pull after his 185-yard game last week.

Hyland started because Peter Lee, who was questionable because of a sprained ankle, woke up Saturday with the flu. "I couldn't be prouder of what T. J. did," Siedlecki said. "He practices every day, and he got an opportunity today and he stepped in Trinity Run Down By Kelley By WOODY ANDERSON COURANT STAFF WRITER MEDFORD, Mass.

With 3:18 remaining Saturday TUFTS 9 TRINITY 7 against Tufts, Trinity found itself in lousy field position. But vv 1 if -Wh mm i'im in MUmnni -n ASSOCIATED PRESS KERON HErJRY started at quarterback after missing last week with a hip pointer, but couldn't get the Huskies moving. He left in the third quarter with a knee injury. UConn Streak Ends '1 in SO starting from the 5-yard line, Greg Ward, facing one of his most difficult situations in his second year at quarterback, got the Bantams marching through the air. Ward completed 7 of 13 passes for 53 yards, collecting four first downs.

He also ran 7 yards on a draw for another first down to the Tufts 35 with 1:27 remaining. After watching Tufts control the clock with a numbing ground game, Ward had given the game a different look. And in the final minutes of this tantalizing finish, he was giving the Bantams a chance. But Tufts defensive end Reid Palmer intercepted Ward on the next play at the 30, halting the 65-yard drive to preserve a 9-7 victory and remain unbeaten in the New England Small College Athletic Conference. "We got a lot of stuff underneath and we got in a good rhythm," said Ward (19-for-38 for 231 yards).

"I shouldn't have thrown the last one. I forced it. Palmer was between Ward and intended receiver Joe Wahl and I didn't see him in time." Tufts is 44 for the first time since 1998. Trinity is 2-2. There was no scoring in the second half.

In the third quarter, Trinity's Skip Sullivan missed a 45-yard field goal to the left. Tufts won in large part because running back Kevin Kelley 238 pounds and bigger than all but two Trinity defenders couldn't be stopped. He had 37 carries a career-high 214 yards. The 6-foot Kelley looked like a piece of farm equipment the way he dragged, pulled and dug for yardage. In the fourth quarter, he carried 10 of the Jumbos' 14 plays.

He had 10 of Tufts' 15 first downs. "The offensive line was exceptional," Kelley said. "On every play they got me a push, 2, 3, 4 yards and let me go from there." Kelley ran behind a mammoth line that averaged 40 pounds more than Trinity's defense. Trinity took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on Brian Fabrizio's 1-yard run. The key play of the drive was Ward's 44-yard pass to Wahl.

Fabrizio injured a leg with 10:02 remaining and was helped off the field. He did not return. Tufts running back Chuck McGraw scored in the second quarter ona33-yard option cutback run, one play after Wahl sliced a 20-yard punt "We were in man-to-man coverage. They made a good call and took advantage of the situation," Trinity coach Chuck Priore said. Howie Rock missed the conversion kick.

But just before halftime. Rock kicked a 26-yard field goal. Steve Cella, a free safety, had his 17th career interception, tying a Trinity record. Cella also had seven tackles, three pass deflections and caused a fumble that he recovered. "Our defense did a great job," Ward said.

They gave us a chance. That's all you can ask." pushed UConn back to its 23. The Huskies paid for it. Adam Coles' punt was blocked by J.R. Reed and returned 14 yards for a touchdown by Kenny Robinson.

Santiago Grammatica's extra point kick was no good, giving South Florida a 6-2 lead with 5:50 left in the first quarter. Both teams missed field goals. Marc Hickok came up short on a 53-yard attempt with 2:38 remaining in the first quarter. Grammatica pushed a 24-yard attempt wide right with 14:43 remaining in the second. UConn's problem in the kicking game continued Coles' 21-yard punt gave South Florida the ball at the Huskies 41.

It took the Bulls three plays to score helped by two penalties by the Huskies. Perkins was called for interference and Wallace was offsides. Wallace's penalty gave South Florida a first down at the UConn 26, where the Bulls got creative. Blackwell completed a 12-yard pass to Chris Iskrea, who lat-eraled to running back Clenton Crossley who went the final 14 yards for a touchdown. South Florida again failed to convert the point after, this time because of a bad snap.

That left the Bulls with a 12-2 lead with 7:41 left UConn bounced back to put together a 73-yard touchdown drive. Small capped the eight-play drive with a 5-yard touchdown run for the touchdown, cutting the South Florida lead to 12-9 with 4:19 remaining in the half. An 8-yard completion to DeAndrew Rubin, a 5-yard run by Cross-ley and a 9-yard run by Blackwell moved the ball to the 2.

On third down, Blackwell executed a naked bootleg perfectly and skipped into the end zone from 3 yards with 1:37 remaining before halftime. UConn dug a deeper hole after the usually sure-handed Small fumbled at the UConn 19. The Bulls' Chris Daley recovered with 1:23 left. An interception by Perkins in the end zone was negated by an interference penalty on linebacker Razul Wallace. That gave South Florida a first down at the 4.

Two plays later, Blackwell scored on a 1-yard run to give the Bulls a 26-9 lead with 24 seconds remaining in the half. Blackwell completed a 28-yard touchdown pass to Travis Lipp with 10:30 remaining in the third quarter to made it 33-9. Blackwell scored on a 3-yard run less than three minutes later to make it 40-9. UConn actually had scored first. South Florida handed UConn a 2-0 load with midway through the first quarter, when a bad shotgun snap from the Bulls 20-yard line sailed wide of Blackwell and into the end zone.

Blackwell did the smart thing and batted the ball out the back of the end zone for a safety. The Huskies retained possession on the free kick, but couldn't work it to their advantage.
