8 and revious ranking: GMs meet in Chicago Instead of swaying palm trees, the roar of 747s greeted baseball's general managers as they began gathering for their annual meeting. They've come to a hotel near O'Hare International Airport to swap stories and perhaps players, and to start discussions with agents. Increasing the use video replay among umpires could be a topic when the formal meetings start Tuesday, especially after a series of missed calls in the postsea-soa Video reviews, which began in 2008, are limited to determining whether potential home runs are fair or foul or whether the ball cleared a fence. Around the league Dodgers: Joe Torre's entire coaching staff will be back. Third base coach Larry Bowa, first base coach Mariano Duncan, pitching coach RickHoneycutt, hitting coach Don Mattingly, bench coach Bob Schaefer, bullpen coach Ken Howell, coach Manny Mota and instructor JeffPent-land will return in 2010.

The Dodgers have won consecutive NL West titles in Torre's two seasons as manager. Rays: Exercised their $10 million option on All-Star Carl Crawford. The team on Monday also declined $2 million options on left-handed reliever Brian Shouse and backup catcher Gregg Zaun, The speedy left fielder also is the longest-tenured player in Rays history and the franchise's career leader in hits, runs, steals, triples, RBIs and games. Club bringing back Martinez, Wakefield The Associated Press The Red Sox exercised their $7.7 million option on Victor Martinez and declined options on Jason Varitek and Alex Gonzalez on Monday. Boston also agreed to a $5 million, two-year contract with 43-year-old knuckle-bailer Tim Wakefield, replacing a perpetual $4 million annual club option.

The moves on the options were expected after Boston obtained Martinez from the Cleveland Indians on July 31 and he replaced Varitek as the starting catcher; The club optionforVaritekwasworth $5 million, but he can stay with the team if he exercises his $3 million player option. The Red Sox also could try to keep Gonzalez at shortstop for less than the $6 million option. He receives, a $500,000 buyout. Martinez and Gonzalez played well for the Red Sox while Varitek struggled offensively for the second straight season. Wakefield was sidelined most of the second half with a back injury after making the All-Star team for the first time.

Martinez made the AL All-Star team for the third time and finished with a 303 batting average, 23 homers and 108 RBIs in 155 games as a catcher.first baseman and designated hitter. For Boston, he batted336 with eight homers and 41 RBIs in 56 games. The 37-year-old Varitek hit a career-low .209 with 14 homers and 51 RBIs after batting .220 with 13 homers and 43 RBIs in 2008. 19,355 team, I thought we had a chance to make a run at it again. I had won in New York after 54 years and I said, Wow, imagine being able to win in Toronto and New York? So I had always had that in the back of my head." The season following the lockout ended up being a time of great change for the NHL. Hull signed with the Coyotes after the lockout ended, but only appeared in five games before retiring. The pace was suddenly too fast for a 41-year-old who hadn't played a meaningful game in l'2 years. Without the layoff, Hull believes he would have stuck around the league longer. "Absolutely.no question," he said.

"I know that for a fact." The hardest thing for Leetch is the lingering belief the lockout cost him a chance at another Stanley Cup. After a strong career with the New York Rangers, the smooth-skating defenseman had been dealt to the Toronto Maple Leafs near the trading deadline in the 2003-04 season.
