Whatever happened to Sunday? by Irving Wallace, David Wallechinsky and Amy Wallace HOI 2 3rt 7 9 K) r- MS 16 17 I in lZ 19 20 21 28293 ,26127 Phantom freighter "Poet," which vanished en route to Egypt in 1980, a maritime mystery Disappearance of the 'Poet' It is a matter of concern to many sincere people that the Christian Church in the time of the Apostles moved from a special observance of sabbath on the seventh day of the week to observance on the first day. The day of rest became 'The Lord's Day" and was celebrated on Sunday, the day of Christ's Resurrection. The reasons and circumstances of the change are considered in our pamphlet. More important than any debate about changes is the need for all of us to reconsider the place of a special day of worship in our lives. Too many of us have forgotten.

Write for the free booklet, "Remember the Sabbath Keep it Holy!" No one will call on you. On Oct. 24, 1980, the U.S. freighter Poet, with a cargo of yellow corn and a crew of 34, suddenly disappeared without even sending a distress signal. It was never found, nor was the crew.

A U.S. House of Representatives committee held hearings in 1981 to investigate the disappearance. It was established that Vh hours after leaving Philadelphia on Oct. 24. the Poet sent a message reporting a speed of 15 knots on a course toward Gibraltar, with Nov.

9 as its estimated date of arrival at Port Said, in Egypt. Later that day. Third Mate Robert Gove called his wife by ship-to-shore telephone. He reported no problems on board. That was the last communication from the ill-fated ship.

Two days later, on Oct. 26, the Poet should have radioed again, according to routine practice. It did not. Its owner privately attempted to communicate with the freighter but waited until Nov. 3 to alert the Coast Guard, which conducted a fruitless 10-day air search covering 300.000 square miles.

Two possible explanations to come out of the House hearings were that the Poet was hijacked in an underworld scheme to trade its cargo for heroin in Iran, or that it was carrying secret explosives to Egypt for the U.S. military. The official decision, however, was that the ship was probably lost in a sudden storm at night, before the crew could send a message. But no debris was ever found, and the mystery remains unsolved. Conn. 06521 During the Civil War, a novice Union, commander crossed the battle lines to ask the enemy whether he should surrender. In September 1862, at the battle of Mun-fordville, Col. John T. Wilder found himself surrounded and outnumbered six-to-one by Gen.

Braxton Bragg's Confederate forces. An Indiana lawyer, Wilder lacked the combat experience and confidence to decide between fighting or surrendering. What he needed was professional advice even if it had to come from the enemy. Waving a white flag, Wilder entered the Confederates' camp and approached Maj. Gen.

Simon Bolivar Buckner, respected for his integrity. Buckner demurred when asked what to do. Instead, he referred the Union officer to General Bragg, who invited Wilder to count the number of cannon trained on his forces. Wilder stopped counting at 46. "I believe I'll surrender," he said.

Wilder promptly turned over 4267 prisoners to Bragg along with 10 guns, 5000 rifles and other supplies. Buckner said later, "I would not have deceived that man under those circumstances for L.vftMr. Froe 7559 Add 8 touch of fun to a room with Mr. Frog. He's about 21" and can be used as a has-sock.
