But, after the Beavers held the Trojans on the next series of downs, the dropped fair catch all but erased Oregon State's hopes of an upset. It was the conference opener for both schools and it was all Southern Cal until late in the first half. Coach Tom Jones' charges demonstrated power-plus as they rolled to their fourth win of the season and probably grabbed at least a tie of the lead in the Gulf South Conference.

The sixth ranked NAIA team demonstrated a stout defense all the way to stop the otherwise offensive Lions. Led by Dennis Anderson, James Hawkins, Bruce Brooks, Steve Crenshaw, and Danny Mathews, the Trojans held the visiting Lions scoreless. Split-end Perry Griggs, pass catcher deluxe took a pass from Kenny McLain and scooted 38 yards for the first touchdown. Reserve fullback Richard Bassett who had his biggest night carrying the ball, ran nine yards for the second Troy touchdown. Bassett picked up 40 yards on the 51 yard march on four plays.

Alert Tony Myrick, from Greenville, intercepted a Gene Estopa pass and raced 27 yards untouched for the third touchdown in the third quarter. Jim Reed, freshman kicking specialist from Tallahassee, booted a 34-yard field goal with 5:11 left in the third quarter to conclude the scoring for the game. SE Louisiana had one scoring threat midway in the fourth quarter when they drove down to the Troy 15. Then the stout Trojan forwards went to work, stopped two running plays and then pounced on a fumble to stop the threat. Ralph Sanders recovered for Troy.
