Chippewa have speared 2,488 walleye this spring from the Turtle-Flambeau Flowage in southern Iron County, according to DNR officials. A total of 168 walleye have been speared from Iron County's Trade Lake. Fishermen caught many small walleye from the Gile Flowage over the weekend.

President lays memorial wreath WASHINGTON (AP) In a solemn V-E Day observance, President Clinton laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington Cemetery this morning to honor American veterans of World War II. V-E Day Remembered Clinton was ushered into the cemetery by a 21-gun salute under bright blue skies. The president, to a military drum roll, placed a wreath at the white tombs and stood with his hand over his heart as a bugler sounded taps. After the brief observance, Clinton walked over to greet the 50 World War II veterans invited to take part. He made no public remarks.

Clinton later was addressing 5,000 veterans and attending a military review at nearby Fort Myer, Va. Defense Secretary William Perry and Gen. John Shalikashvili, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, were to accompany the president. At Fort Myer, Clinton was to be introduced by a decorated World War II veteran. The ceremony was to end with a march and review of the troops, a medley of military songs and a fly over by Army, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard helicopters and fighter planes.

After the ceremonies in Washington, Clinton was flying to Moscow to observe V-E Day ceremonies and to meet with Russian President Boris Yeltsin. He recognized the sacrifice made by the former Soviet Union during World War II in a speech Sunday night. "Five decades ago the people of the United States and the then-Soviet Union joined to oppose an evil unmatched in our history," Clinton told American-Israeli Public Affairs Conference.
