JC High graduate Dennis Lubert is the current senior ace of Clemson's archrival, University of South Carolina. Clemson has won the Atlantic Coast Conference title the last three years (South Carolina is not a member), and boasts eight ACC crowns and five berths in the 8-team College World Series in coach Bill Wilhelm's 24 seasons. Clemson was No. 5 in national college-baseball rankings before a two-week slump that has felled it to 18th. Lubert, already in the top five at SC for career victories, was to have faced Clemsao this Monday, but has been inactive, with a bad back, apparently injured in "over-throwing" in a game which he knew chief Los Angeles Dodger scout Reggie Otero was watching.

Lubert retired the first 13 he faced that day, but was unable to make it through the next inning and in his next start was shelled for nine runs in three innings in a 14-0 loss to UNC-Wilming-ton, worst SC loss in 20 years. That makes the Yankees' 4th-round draft choice of last summer 5-2 this season. He may try again tonight against University of Miami, which is 5-for-5 over SC this season though, nonsensically, ranked 20th to SC's 16th in the national ratings. Wilhelm, whose next Clemson victory will be his 650th, said by phone of yesterday's signing: "John Pawlowski has a Division I arm. We're real happy to have him." The right-hander was a 1980 sophomore standout who beat Union-Endi-cott in the Southern Tier Athletic Conference's championship game.

He was scheduled to pitch Seton's opener today against Chenango Valley at Rec Park. SUTTON'S AUCTION BARN Leon C.
