DAILY NEWS Port Angeles, March 30, 1975 Electrical-powered autos encouraged WASHINGTON (AP) Legislation to promote sales and widespread use of electric-powered cars as the second, around-town vehicle for American families was introduced in the House Wednesday. Under the bill, the federal Energy Research and Development Administration would develop standards for converting conventional small cars to battery-power. The agency then would buy several PENINSULA LANDSCAPING Landscape Design Construction Free Estimates 683-3501 Evenings 683-6969 thousand cars from manufacturers and in turn lease or sell them to companies and individuals. The second phase of the three-year, $120-million program calls for development of entirely new battery- powered cars for lease and sale. The principal sponsors of the bill are Rep.

Mike McCormack, and George Brown, D-Calif. At a news conference the congressmen said the electric-powered car is perfectly satisfactory as a second car since half of total automobile driving consists of trips of five miles or less. Pollution and energy consumption would be cut considerably the sponsors said, adding that the nation will be running out of oil by the end of the century. The congressmen said the federal sale concept is not new. McCormack said equipment for the federal solar energy and geothermal demonstration programs is built at federal expense and sold to industry.

Brown said small manufacturers currently dominate the electric car business and success of the vehicle could lead to a more diversified auto industry. At the news conference, a spokesman for an electric car maker said one electric charge costing about 50 cents would enable the vehicle to travel 60 miles at 60 miles per hour.
