An estimated 50,000 remained on the premises until Auburn tried to pull it out on a field goal with 1:04 left in the game. For the record, Good had two touchdown passes among 17 completions that netted 232 yards on 27 throwing attempts all against an Auburn defense that was savage for the greater part of the afternoon.

He was easily the difference in a hard-earned victory and what could have been a rout for Auburn. But Auburn's Tigers could blame only themselves for the defeat. They jumped away to a 14-0 lead with 6:50 left in first quarter. Dwight Hurston had rambled (See GOOD'S, Page 6D) lV A V. Down 10-3 and backed to their own 20-yard line with four minutes and 25 seconds left, Paul Bryant's Crimsons rode the passing of sophomore Scott Hunter 80 long, gruelling yards and scored on Hunter's clutch fourth-down pass from the Vol four-yard line with 1:12 left in the game. LSU held Kentucky's highly touted halfback Dicky Lyons in check for most of the game. But the passing of Stan Forston and the running of fullback Raynard Makin kept the Wildcats going. Kentucky scored in the second period after another drive was stalled inside the LSU 10-yard stripe. Bob Jones kicked a 20-yard field goal with 6:04 left in the period and the Wildcats led 3-0 at halftime.

LSU's offense, sluggish before intermission, came to life as the second half opened. The Tigers, behind quarterback Freddie Haynes, drove 71 yards for a touchdown with Trigger Allen plunging over for the one. It was LSU's fourth victory in five games and the Tigers opening contest in the SEC. The Wildcats, who haven't beaten LSU in eight years, dropped to 2-3. All of Kentucky's losses have been in league play.

Two of Kentucky's drives were thwarted by fumbles and a third was stopped when LSU intecepted a Wildcat pass. The Wildcats drove to the Tigers 26 in the opening stanza and shortly after to the LSU three. After LSU went ahead in the third period, Kentucky put together two more marches only to see the Tiger dfense stiffen. Lyons gained 56 yards for the Wildcats. He toted the ball 26 times.

He made only 24 yards on kickoff and punt returns-one of his specialties-as LSU effectively kept the ball away from him.
