1 41 Advertiser-Journal "A ratoarria Saturday, September 2, 1978 by Ed and Stevie Baldwin Alphabet blocks have many uses aomeumes you aon i realize ine potential uses for a project until it has been completed. Stevie stitched these five giant alphabet blocks as pillows for our little boys' rooms. Since she made them, however, the boys have used them to build forts, as stools for coloring at their table, as headrests for watching television and in a row as an imaginary train. And the best use of all for teaching 3-year-old Mark the ABCs. Your child's imagination probably will add to the list of uses.

We painted our designs on 15-inch squares of inexpensive canvas fabric, them machine-stitched the squares together and stuffed them. They're quick and easy to do, and lots of fun for children. You can make one, two, or all five of these giant blocks, and the children can help you paint them. Our full-size, iron-on transfer patterns for all in five different colors black, white, red, blue and yellow. Waterproof marking pens may be used instead of paint.

Most stationery stores carry stencils you can use for lettering, and children's books are good sources of ideas for the accompanying designs. Transfer each design to the center of a 15-inch square. Paint each design and let it dry overnight. We chose lots of bright colors for our blocks to appeal to young eyes. After the squares are dry, stitch six of them into a cube shape, stuff them and watch your child's imagination go to work.

If you would like our full-size, iron-on patterns and instructions (includes letters and designs for all 26 alphabet letters (each one can be reused), send $4.95 and specify Project No. 1808-4. For a pack containing all 26 letters and design patterns, paint, brushes and instructions, send $1.95 and specify Project No. 1808-5. For a list of other projects, send 50 cents.

For the first inoculations, I prefer to give the, vaccine which is now combined to protect against pneumonitis and feline distemper.

This should be repeated when the cat is three to four months of age and again when the cat reaches one year of age. Of course annual boosters for a few years are recommended. These two diseases are by far the most deadly and actually the most common diseases in cats. by Worth Lanier, DVM There are still questions among cat owners as to just what vaccination and treatments a kitten needs when it arrives at its new home. And though we've followed strict disease-prevention programs with puppies for years, it is my thinking that it's far more important for the cat owner to follow a rigid schedule of inoculations and treatment due to the closer associations and confinement within the household that a kitten enjoys.

I don't think there's any greater disappointment for a veterinarian to see than a young cat presented in the throes of distemper or pneumonitis and be told by the owner that the poor creature had received no inoculations. All too often this occurs at about the time the cat has finally been trained and has become a joy to the entire household. I've often said that one of the greatest services a veterinarian renders a pet owner is in advice and actions in preventing diseases. Actually, though these immunizations may seem expensive, the truth is that they are low priced when compared to the cost of treatment when disease does strike. Of all the vaccines that I buy, those for cats are the most expensive.

My advice as to what constitutes a disease prevention program for a newly acquired kitten begins with a visit to a veterinary hospital. And it's my thinking that this first visit should only come after the kitten has become fully acclimated and satisfied in its new surroundings. And roughly this would be about two weeks af4er it arrived. The first visit should involve both a complete physical examination and also a discussion with the new owner wherein a multitude of advice concerning feeding, confinement, disease-prevention inoculations and even advice concerning desexing and the handling of the cat once it reaches adulthood and old age. On this first visit the cat should be carefully checked for internal parasites.

If none are found and the kitten appeared in robust health, I administered the first inoculation. If there were internal lTS3nfl5E) if Like to meet the public? Want to earn extra money?
