INSIDE SPORTS rrnrn-niB The Sunday Press Oct. 24, 19B1' Binghamton, N.Y. 5 TDs by Colgate frosh -f iirirniiiiiwuiniiijiui. From Press wire services NEW YORK Tailback Stacey Hall, a 155-pound freshman making his first varsity start, rushed for a Colgate-record five touchdowns to lead a 41-3 victory over Columbia yesterday. The 5-foot-7 teenager from Toms River, N.J., had played only JV ball until last weekend's four impressive carries against Lafayette, but got the call as Red Raider rushing leader Rich Erenberg sat out the game with a pulled hamstring.

Hall gained 146 yards in 21 carries and scored on runs of 1, 1, 2, 7 and 9 yards. He burst 9 yards over left tackle with 5:27 gone in the first quarter to give Colgate a lead it never relinquished. Columbia only score came on a 36-yard field goal by Miro Lovric, his eighth this season, breaking a Lions record that had stood since 1915. The Colgate record of four touchdowns was set by Jack Call (Cortland High grad and later a Baltimore Colt) in 1956 against Rutgers and tied by Steve Morgan in 1970 against Bucknell. Hall scored his fifth TD only 4:37 into the third quarter, but left the game at that point, coach Fred Dunlap passing up the opportunity to go for the NCAA record of seven TDs in a game.

(The NCAA scoring record is 43 points set against Colgate by Jim Brown of Syracuse in 1956, but the record for TDs is held by Arnold "Showboat" Boykin of Mississippi in 1951). Colgate (5-2) renews that Syracuse series this Saturday at the Carrier Dome. Dunlap has what may be a difficult decision, but not an unpleas ant one, in whether his halfback is freshman Hall or sophomore Erenberg. Freshman QB Steve Calabria continued to perform well for the Raiders, his 9-for-17 good for 137 yards. Tom Rogers caught all nine of them, to move within 18 yards of the Colgate career receiving-yardage record.

Columbia's Don a soph from Miami, also caught nine passes as classmate John Wit-kowski completed 17 of 35 passes for the Lions (1-5), for 199 yards. BOSTON COLLEGE 41, ARMY 6-Freshman quarterback Doug Flutie riddled the host Cadets' pass defense with 15 completions in 21 attempts for 244 yards and three touchdowns. Tight end Scott Nizolek caught eight for 89 vards and two TDs. dTus a2-point conversion toss, after catching a total of but seven in BC's five previous games. Snapping.

a 4-game losing streak, BC (2-4) registered all its points before the Cadets (3-4) scored on a 79-yard pass play from Bryan Allem to Todd Williams late in the fourth period. Tailback star Shelby Gamble suffered a hip pointer shortly after opening the scoring on a 38-yard run, but replacement Howie Brown responded with 114 yards on 26 carries. Army's Gerald Walker, who had rushed for 767 yards in six games, was held to 27 vards. NAVY 27, WM. MARY Halfback Eddie Meyers pumped life into a sputtering Navy offense with a 70-yard touchdown run, igniting the victory.

Navy is 5-2, and 2-5. A- Headknocker rfowie Brown of Boston College pays the price for a 4-yard gain, as Army's Pat Scanlon goes underneath the face mask and adds a helmet rap. Scanlon was called for a face mask penalty. Alfred edges Cortland Upstate 'smalls' ALBANY STATE 7, NORWICH 0-No. 1 QB Tom Pratt's leg remains in a cast and No.

2 QB Tom Roth couldn't do it, but No. 3 man Dave Napp hit Bob Brien with a 45-yard touchdown pass with 0:25 left after John DiBari's interception at mid-field re-opened the door. Host Albany is 5-2, Norwich 3-4. Ithaca holds on for victory Special to The Press ITHACA American International's Fred Pa-pale did everything he could yesterday to spoil senior quarterback Doug DeCarr's return to the Ithaca College lineup. Papale caught 10 passes, three for touchdowns, but the Yellow Jackets were beaten by Ithaca 27-23.

DeCarr, playing for the first time in three weeks because of an injured shoulder, passed for Special to The Press CORTLAND Cortland State ran for 207 yards against the nation's No. 3 team against the rush, but in the end it was little consolation as the Red Dragons lost 21-14 to Alfred Univeristy in college football yesterday. The Red Dragons dominated the first half, darting to a 14-3 halftime lead. Alfred's defense turned to stone, however, as it allowed only one Cortland first down and no points in the second half. Cortland State drove 49 yards in seven plays to score on its second possession.

The big play of the series was a 31-yard drive by Mike Bowe, setting up a 9-yard TD scamper by quarterback Jay Cieply. After Alfred's Kris Johnson kicked a 36-yard field goal, Bowe rushed 87 yards for a touchdown at 7:48 of the second period. He finished with a game-high 145 yards in 15 carries against the, nation's No. 7 ranked Division III school. Vestal grad Dave Cook rushed for 72 yards in 18 carries.

The Saxons tightened the gap in the second half on Johnson's 21-yard field goal. Alfred tied the game in a series of six plays for 72 yards. After a couple of 11-yard gains, by Bob Pietrosanto, quarterback Glenn Lawn hit Joe Hale with an 11-yard TD pass. Pietrosanto's conversion recep tion from Lawn tied the score at 14. The winning drive went 62 yards in 13 plays.

Pietrosanto scored the touchdown on a 14-yard pass from Lawn and Johnson kicked the point after. Alfred is now 7-0 while Cortland drops to 4-3. Widener now 7-0 BETHLEHAM, Pa. (AP) Senior kicker Mark Stephan booted two 23-yard field goals and a third of 29 yards to lead undefeated Widener to a 23-0 victory over Moravian in Middle Atlantic Conference college football yesterday. Widener, 7-0, is ranked No. 1 in Division III. The Pioneers gained 411 total yards and senior split end Tom Kincaide set a Widener record with 188 yards with seven receptions.

The Widener defense limited Moravian, 0-5-1, to 258 total yards. Senior quarterback Bob Cole rifled a 64-yard touchdown pass to Kincaide late in the third quarter after Widener took over on downs on its own 36 yard line. and Tony Camarata each ran for over 100 yards for the home team, though it trailed 10-7 at halftime. Rochester (3-2-1) hadn't beaten the Larries (3-4) in six years. MANSFIELD 7, BROCKPORT 3 Troy Fisher ran one yard for a fourth-quarter to give the visitors victory a defensive struggle.

TRINITY 25, UNION 18 Freshman Joe Shield passed for three TDs and ran for the other as the home team (4-1) rallied from an 18-7 half-time Chris Kellaher scorec on two catches totalling 89 yards foi Union (3-2-1). DAYTON 14, BUFFALO 7 Tom Haner scored on two 1-yard plunges and Buffalo turned the ball over six times, but it was a vast improvement from last year's 55-0 outcome. Haner's scores came in the second and third quarters after Buffalo had fumbled the ball away on its 25 and lines respectively.

Buffalo reached 14-7 early in the final period on a 43-yard pass play from Marty Barrett to Joe D'Amico, Defending NCAA Div. Ill champion Dayton (7-1) held Buffalo (5-2) to minus 40 yards rushing and intercepted four Barrett passes. ROCHESTER 34, ST. DeCarr entered late in the first quarter with Ithaca trailing 10-7 and capped a 67-yard drive with a 36-yardtouchdown pass to tight end Chris Pope. The Bombers had taken an early 7-0 lead. Kevin Finn returned the opening kick 90 yards and John Koob, who finished with a game-high 96 yards on 24 carries, rolled over from the 1. AIC, which got a 32-yard field goal from Jim Raymond, went ahead when Papale hauled in a 20-yard touchdown pass over the middle from Brian McLean. Each team traded punts, before Pope's touchdown put the Bombers ahedd to stay.

The winners had started the drive on the 33 and moved to the end zone on seven plays. Ithaca made it 17-10 in the second quarter on Ed Moreau's 5-yard run. The scoring drive was set up by Finn's 28-yard punt return, leaving the Bombers at AIC's 42. The drive was kept alive when DeCarr hooked up with Jim Duncan for 20 yards on a third-and-4 situation. AIC, which won the opening coin toss but elected not to receive, kicked off to start the second half.

Later in the third quarter, Papale pulled down his third scoring pass, a 19-yarder. The Yellow Jackets, with time running out, drove to the Ithaca 44.

Holy Cross is 4-3, Brown 1-5. Early in the second quarter, halfback Sean Maher made it 28-0 Dartmouth with another 44-yard TD run. At that pace, it could been a lot worse.

As it wound up, it was the worst Big Red setback by an Ivy foe since a 51-14 -Princeton margin in 1963. The only wider margin against any-level opposition in that span was last year's 44-3 Rutgers romp. It was also the most points by either team in the Cornell-Dartmouth rivalry when Dartmouth avenged a 59-7 beating with 62-13 and 53-7 retaliations. Yesterday, Cornell managed its only score shortly before the half when quarterback Doug Fusco hit flanker Alva Tay" lor from 12 yards out. Ken Rubinstein missed field-goal attempts of 50 and 51 attempts.

The 42-7 finish belied the virtual standoff in statistics, including a modest 17-16 first-down differential and 263-202 margin in rushing. The first score came on Cornell's first offensive series when linebacker Scott Hacker broke through to block punter Scott Dowdell's kick. Defensive back Charles Williams fell on ball in end zone for the score.

Dartmouth ran the score to 14-0 later in the quarter on a 3rd and 5 play from the Cornell 44. West Virginia's Murat Tercan missed a 45-yard field goal in 'the third period and State went 72 yards in 10 plays for its second TD. Black-ledge threw only one pass along the way, then threw for the TD as Kenny Jackson made a nice grab of a ball which was tipped and nearly intercepted by Tim Agee. The 11-yard play gave State a 17-7 lead. Penn State's defense toughened up and stopped Luck cold on three third-down passes as the game wound into the final period. Jackson's flanker reverse keyed a 5-play, 66-yard drive for Penn State's third TD, which Meade scored from a yard out.

The final TD came with 28 seconds left and was scored by third-string tailback Tony Mumford, a freshman who scooted 13 yards for the score, bouncing off tacklers along the way. Penn State, 6-0, blew the first scoring chance when Williams fumbled a pitchout on a third-and-goal from the WVU 6-yard line, but made good on its third possession as Meade rumbled 26 yards on a draw play the first time anyone had run for more than 15 yards against West Virginia all season to highlight a 6-play, 44-yard drive.

Williams got the TD on a 5-yard sweep around the left flank. The Mountaineers came right back on the next series when Luck, on a third-and-19, hit Rich Hollins on a crossing pattern and the Lion defenders let him scamper away to complete a 54-yard TD play.
