Final scores Marcelo Rios can soothe his aching back with a $1.3 million paycheck. Wincing in pain and on the verge of quitting early on, Rios persevered yesterday to beat a weary Andre Agassi in five sets and capture the Grand Slam Cup in Munich, Germany, for the richest prize in tennis. Venus Williams won the inaugural women's edition of the tournament, using a big serve to overpower Patty Schnyder of Switzerland 6-2, 3-6; 6-2 and earn $800,000. Rios looked as if he would retire but the Chilean recovered to win 64, 2-6, 7-6 (7-1 5-7, 6-3. Agassi, now No.

Finai scores MLS 3-2 victory Saturday' over Detroit, said he expects to be back on the ice practicing tomorrow and to play Friday in Philadelphia's regular season opener against the Rangers in New York. Peter Ferrarp scored with 3:25 left, giving the Boston Bruins a 3-2 victory over the New York Rangers in each team's exhibition finale.

Ferraro scored from the right circle, beating a screened Mike Richter on the glove side. Wayne Gretzky appeared to tie the game for the Rangers with just 18 seconds remaining, but referee Richard Trottier ruled that John MacLean had pushed the puck ahead to Gretzky with his gloved hand. The Rangers scored twice in a 1:07 span of the third period to erase a 2-0 Boston lead. Harry York scored his first goal of the preseason, sending Mike Knuble's pass past Rob Tallas. Gretzky picked up an assist when he fed a pass to Esa Tikkanen, who beat Tallas at 13:27.

Elkington wins playoff GOLF: Steve Elkington, coming from four shots back in regulation yesterday, paired the first playoff hole of the Buick Challenge to beat Fred Funk, who had led the first three days of the $1.5 million tournament. Elkington, sidelined for a month earlier this year with a bout with viral meningitis, shot a 5-under-par 65 for a 267 to tie Funk, who had a 68 in the final round over the par 72, Mountain View course at the Callaway Gardens resort 75 miles southwest of Atlanta. On the first playoff hole the par 4, 432-yard 18th hole, Funk hit into a fairway bunker, 184 yards from the pin. His second shot hit the lip of the bunker and caromed into the fairway about 20 yards sideways, and his third shot landed in the deep rough, five yards off the green all before Elking-ton's second shot. Funk's fourth shot landed 8 feet beyond the pin.

Elkington 's second shot was in the middle of the green, and he calmly two-putted for his par and the ninth win of his career. Gil Morgan says he's drained from a long season on the Senior PGA Tour. Ditto for Hale Irwin. Yet there they were again, placing 1-2 in yesterday's $1.5 million Vantage Championship. Morgan rallied from four shots back with a final-round 5-under-par 65 to beat his chief rival by one shot on the par-70, Tanglewood Park championship course.

Morgan's 12-under-par 198 total earned him $225,000 and tied him with Irwin, the tour's leading money winner, with six wins apiece. Irwin, the first golfer to reach the $2 million mark in a season last year, is $580 short of the $2.5 million mark in 1998. Kwan and Eldredge win titles FIGURE SKATING: Michelle Kwan and Todd Eldredge each earned 6.0 presentation marks on their free skate last night to win titles at the Keri Lotion Figure Skating Classic. Kwan, the world champion and 1998 Olympic silver medalist, earned two perfect marks. Eldredge, the 1998 world championships runner-up, received one 6.0 mark.

American Michael Weiss finished second, followed by Ukraine's Viktor Petrenko and Olympic champion IliaKulik. Angela Nikodinov was second in the women's competition. Russia's Maria Butyrskaya finished third and Surya Bonaly of France wound up fourth. BOWLING Vantage Championship At Clemmons, N.C.
