4-B SUNDAY. BlngBamton, Y. Stptember Wt 35- 7 half uries Syracuse Lehigh humbles Colgaters, 38-6 EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) Flanker Kirk Gibson raced far one touchdown on a reverse and hauled in a tonj pass for another yesterday while Michigan State scored three quick touchdowns and went on to maul Syracuse 49-21 ki intersecUonal football. Sophomore MSU quarterback Bert Vaughn, tilling in for the injured Ed Smith, coolly threaded the Orangemen secondary, including two long bombs for touchdowns.

And the Spartan defense kept a misfiring Syracuse attack bottled up in its end of the field for most of the game Syracuse, acting stage-struck before the crowd of 70,000, was never in the contest as it fumbled away the opening kickoff, then gave up three touchdowns in the first nine minutes. The Orangemen offense was beset by fumbles and mistakes, and seldom got untracked. It moved 62 yards for a second-period score after Ron Fameski took over from starting signal-caller Tim Wilson, and reserves added another two score late in the game after MSU had already put the game away. North Carolina State, mis hand! iig the ball constantly. Syracuse then put together its first good drive, scoring In eight plays with Fameski hitting tight end Bruce Semall for 19 yards.

But MSU struck right back for one TO and after MSU safety Mark Anderson picked off a Fameski pass, Byrd got behind the secondary to haul in a 38-yard fling from Vaughn for a 35-7 halftime lead. Neither team showed much spark in the third quarter but MSU added two IDS before Farneski hit Monk for a 24-yard touchdown pass and ran six yards for the final score. Farneski was S-for-15 for 143 yards, more than half of it on four Monk catches. But Monk could add only Mor-36 on the ground where diminutive freshman Joe Morris had the game-high l2-for-72 as Michigan State spread the success among 12 carriers. SU fast defensive end Chris Shaffer who will need knee surgery.

Syracuse is 0-S since losing QB star Bill Hurley with rib injuries on the seventh play of the season. He remains extremely doubtful for this week's Illinos game. Michigan State is 1-1, and Vaughn's performance in his first start leaves it unnecessary to rush back ailing QB Ed Smith against Souther Cat. Syracuse got off to a bad start when sun-blinded halfback Art Monk fumbled the kickoff and MSU tailback Steve Smith scored from two yards out two plays later. Smith set up the Spartans' second score moments later, grabbing a punt at full speed and dashing 30 yards to the Orangemen 25.

Four plays later, tailback Leroy McGee charged four yards for the score. With Syracuse unable to get past midf ield, MSU took a 21-0 lead when Vaughn hit split end Eugene Byrd three times for big gains, then handed off to Gibson on a reverse and he sprinted 16 yards down the sidelines to score. At this point, Frank Maloney benched Wilson, who'd given no evidence of bis brilliant play last Saturday at BETHLEHEM, Pa. (AP) Junior quarterback Rich Andres ran for two touchdowns and passed for two more yesterday as undefeated Lehigh rolled over Colgate 38-7 in college football Lehigh was in charge from the early moments of the game, when first the Engineers drove from their own 25 to the Colgate 19 and Ted Iobst kicked a 37-yard field goal, and then stopped a long Colgate counter-drive at the 6, from where the Raiders missed their field goal. Lehigh's 11th straight win was its first meeting with Fred Dunlap, who left the Lehigh coaching job in early 1976 to take over at Colgate.

Andres was one of the many current Engineers he recruited. Lehigh is 3-0, but had been unimpres- Andres passed 19 yards to split end Steve Kreider. Jim McCormick's pass interception at the Colgate 34 set the stage for another touchdown, a 13-yard run by Andres. Lou D'Amibale returned an intercepted pass 16 yards for the final Lehigh score. Lehigh entered the game tied with South Carolina State for the No.

1 national ranking in the NCAA's new 1-AA Division. Andres was backup QB to Little All-America Mike Rieker who led bis club to the Camellia Bowl title, but had been so ineffective in early fall drills that two rivals were given the early-game nods over him until be sparked the fourth-quarter comeback at Slippery Rock. He was 10-for-21 for 144 yards besides running 8 times for 63, which made him the game's No. 2 rusher to teammate Mike Ford (17-for-75). It was the first substantial running by a Lehigh quarterback since Dunlap installed drop-back QB Kim McQuilken in 1970.

Angelo Colosimo, 13-for-39, was Colgate's only man to reach 20. Mancini was 9-for-15 for 141 yards, most of it to Slenker, but was intercepted twice, and backup John Marzo was picked up three times while only completing 2 of 10. "Today, though, we looked like the Dallas Cowboys," said a Lehigh spokesman of the performance behind Andres, the third different QB to start this fall for former Dunlap aide John Whitehead. It was Colgate's worst defeat under Dunlap who was 18-2 until losing his 1977 Delaware finale and last weekend's opener against Holy Cross. Early in the second quarter Lehigh made it 100 on a 59-yard drive, with Andres passing the last 20 to tight end Dave Rarig.

Colgate scored next, on an 80-yard march, including a 40-yard pass from quarterback Alex Mancini to split end Dick Slenker that took the Red Raiders to the Lehigh 5. Two plays later Angelo Colosimo plunged across from the 2, making the score 10-7. Andres scored on a 3-yard run, making the halftime score 17-7. Simunek scored in the first period on a 17-yard pass from Bleck, who followed in the same period with a six-yard touchdown run.

Simunek also scored on a 7-yard pass from Joe Sandora. St, Lawrence now stands at 1-1. Mansfield has a 1-2 mark. BATES 48, UNION COLLEGE 32-Freshman split end Larry DiGiammarino set a new record for touchdown pass receptions among New England colleges and led Bates over Union College yesterday in Lewiston, Maine. DiGiammarino grabbed four touchdown passes, three in the first quarter and one in the fourth.

Sus back on track but Raiders aren't Susquehanna footballers, led by Tony Silipo, who scored twice, wasted no time bouncing back from last week's loss to Pennsylvania schoolboy power Carbon-dale as the Sabers stopped Western Wayne yesterday, 21-13, for their third victory in four 1978 starts. Blue Ridge wasn't as fortunate, managing only 79 yards total offense against Delaware Valley, which pinned an 18-0 loss on the Raiders. Coach Rich Bagnall's Susquehanna team got the only points it needed with touchdowns in each of the first two quarters. First Bob Ragard scored, capping a 13-play, 55-yard march. Seven seconds before halftime, Silipo scored on a 19-yard draw play.

Silipo kicked both extra points, as be did again later following his second TD of the afternoon. Silipo's clinching touchdown came in the third quarter after a fake punt on fourth down kept a Susquehanna drive alive. The team's workhorse bad another busy day from scrimmage, carrying 15 times for 102 yards. Susquehanna held Western Wayne, now 0-4, to minus 25 yards rushing but WW quarterback Jay Ambrose passed for 197 yards, completing six of his last eight throws to rally the hosts to two second-half touchdowns. There were few bright spots for Blue Ridge, 0-2, which had one scoring threat stopped by an interception and another ended when the Raiders were forced to give up possession on downs.

The bright spot for Coach Rick Pambianco was senior nose guard Ron Cranage who had 17 tackles. Battery Sale! Continued from IB and leg injuries, started working their magic. After a pass interference call on fourth down got the Jets rolling, Stanton hit Rogers four times to get the ball to the Pittsburgh 31. That's when Stanton went for the bomb to Guydell Powell on the other flank and got burned as Jones made the interception the fourth of the night and the last of Stanton's illustrious career. The game began on a confusing note when six Pennsylvania officials showed up just after the 7:30 kickoff only to find a full crew of Southern Tier striped-shirts already hard at work.

It turned out that the AFC had assigned Pennsylvania officials to the game, bt had failed to notify the Jets. After a series of lengthy discussions, the Pennsylvanians from the Harris-burg-Lancaster area replaced the crew that had started the game. Things went smoothly enough for the Jets on their second series an interception had ended the first as Dave Goetz bulled over for a touchdown to cap a 52-yard march. Pittsburgh tied the game early in the second quarter on Farmer's 3-yard run, but the Jets took a 13-6 lead with just 40 seconds left in the half when Stanton hit Rob Nearing on a 10-yard TO pass. That play was set up by defensive end Alvin "Yogi" LoUie, who buried Bulger on a pass play, and tackle Hank Michalo-vic, who recovered Bulger's fumble at the PAK-10.

The score remained the same until the final period, when Bulger scrambled away from Steve Kazmark and fired a short TO pass to Farmer to end a 49-yard -drive Things looked a lot brighter to the 1,000 Jets fans in attendance moments later when Al Denny broke away for a 67-yard kickoff return to the PAK-15. Eight plays later seven of them runs by Bango -the Jets scored on Bango's 1-yard pop. Only a great recovery of a wide snap by Kirk Hoover enabled Tony Roach to boot the extra point after that TD and that play was on coach Dick Hoover's mind minutes later when the Jets were knocking on the door again and might have gone for the field goal. Regular center Kell Purdy was absent last night, having been injured last week against Twin City, and while Nick Sco-laro and Ron BucineD blocked effectively in his stead, they had trouble with deep snaps. "I thought about the field goal, yes," said Hoover.

"But Purdy wasn't there and I thought we could go this far (holding his hands two feet apart) on them for a touchdown. But we didn't and that probably was the turning point" The Jets finished the year 10-3, including a pair of regular-season wins over the PAK. (DIVIDUAL Fimr nnMaf: 110. wKn -S Shoo 7-37. Bvl9tr 14.
