animal trained to help him. Though populated with sympathetic characters, the film falls short on plausibility and suspense, and is more a missed opportunity than a rousing success. Orion. 1 :45. BIG TOP PEE-WEE (PG) Vt (Poor-to-Fair) The usually sharp-witted pop-art cult figure Pee-wee Herman opts for a fairly conventional circus romance, spiced with only enough originality and laughs to fill one average half-hour Saturday morning episode of "Pee-wee's Playhouse." With Paul Reubens, Kris Kristofferson, Penelope Ann Miller, Valeria Golino, and Vance the Pig.

Directed by Randal Kleiser, from a script by Reubens and George McGrath. Paramount. 1:30. THE DEAD POOL (R) Vz (Poor-to-Fair) Tough-guy cop "Dy Harry" Callahan returns in the fifth in a series of Clint Eastwood urban police thrillers. Here Harry unravels a series of murders tied to a bizarre gambling uninspired, and disjointed film adaptation of the popular Swedish books for children, in which a magical, unsupervised child named Pippi leads "normal" kids on a series of dream-like adventures.

Directed by Ken Annakin, with Tami Erin, Eileen Brennan, John Schuck and Dick Van Patten. Columbia. 1 :40. CADDYSHACK II (PG) Yi (Worse-than-Poor) A boring, uninspired lunkhead sequel about snobs and social-climbers at a supposedly posh golf club. Despite the presence of comedians Jackie Mason, Dan Aykroyd and Chevy Chase, the film is not funny.

At all. It is truly a waste of everyone's time. Warners. 1:30. MONKEY SHINES (R) (Fair) Horror veteran George Romero goes for a mainstream approach in his new film, a moderate, relatively gore-free thriller that focuses on what happens when the relationship turns sour between a quadriplegic and the COCKTAIL (R) (Poor) An unintentionally laughable melodrama, based on the unlikely premise that bartending is a fast-track glamour profession that'll lead the ambitious and the amoral to untold wealth and sexual conquest.

With over-the-top theatrics from Tom Cruise, Bryan Brown and director Roger Donaldson. Touchstone. 1 :40. DIE HARD (R) Vi (Good-to-Excellent) Bruce Willis stars in the action film the summer of '88 has been waiting for a full-throttle thrill ride in which an off-duty New York cop battles heavily armed terrorists for control of scores of hostages in a Los Angeles high-tech skyscrapper. Willis's appealing performance is matched by the charismatic evil of Alan Rickman as the terrorist chief, and director John McTeirnan delivers action to the max.

Fox. 2:10. THE NEW ADVENTURES OF PIPPI LONGSTOCKING (G) Vi (Poor-to-Fair) A lackluster, game called the dead pool. Eastwood's personality and his ongoing cop character aren't enough to overcome the lack of clarity, realism, or logic in the script. Only hardcore Harry fans need apply.

Warners. 1:30. HOUSEKEEPING (PG) (Good) A quiet, slow-paced portrait of eccentricity, set against the rustic beauty of the Rockies in Idaho, circa 1950. Christine Lahti plays a one-time hobo and free-thinker who returns to her small village to take care of her orphaned nieces. Directed by Bill Forsyth, a master at portraying and sympathizing with quirky nonconformists.

Columbia. 1:50. BIG (PG) (Excellent) A very funny but richly textured comedy about a 13-year-old trapped in the body of a 35-year-old, and forced to choose between a successful and pleasant adulthood, and the challenges and difficulties of adolescence. Masterfully directed by Penny Marshall, with a memorable performance by Tom Hanks. Fox.
