Saturday, October 14, 2000 UFO watchtower provides platform for true believers The Daily Herald Page 13 HOOPER, Colo. (AP) Green, glow-in-the-dark cutouts of bug- eyed extraterrestrials line a dusty road off a two-lane highway in southern Colorado. Travelers stop in a makeshift parking lot on Judy Messoline's ranch, get out and wander into a small, domed building with shelves stocked with "alien dust," posters, shiny extraterrestrial dolls and pyramid candles. Outside, steps lead to a 10-foot- high UFO-watching platform. For $2, people can scan the skies for bright, darting lights and strange, hovering crafts, the likes of which have been reported for decades by residents and visitors in the San Luis Valley.

"I didn't realize I could work 11 hours a day, seven days a week and giggle the whole time," said Messo- line, who, with her partner, Stan Becker, opened the UFO watchtower on Memorial Day weekend. The idea might sound like a joke, but tales of supernatural phenomena abound in this naturally spectacular 50-mile-wide, 125-mile-long valley, which is 7,600 feet in altitude and ringed by the San Juan and Sangre de Cristo mountains. The UFO Computer Network Internet site ranks Saguache County, home of the Watchtower, as No. 1 nationwide in reports of otherworldly sightings per capita 131 this year in the area. Neighboring Alamosa County is No.

Saguache County Undersheriff Mike Norris said his office doesn't get frequent reports about mysteri- ous lights or crafts, "but people talk and it gets out." The book "The Mysterious Valley," by Christopher O'Brien, examines reports through the years of cattle mutilations, mysterious helicopters and oddly shaped aircraft hovering over the valley. Messolinc got the idea to build the watchtower after putting up with ET enthusiasts camping on her property. She also needed to make some money because cattle ranching, which drew her to the valley five years ago, was foundering. A big fan of X-Files," a TV show about UFO-hunting FBI agents, she admits she has seen strange lights in the sky. As for believing in UFOs, she said, "It would take one landing so I could take a look." Messoline, 55, and Becker have built a 10-foot-high UFO-watching platform on their ranch, which is about 220 miles southwest of Denver. Messoline, a big fan of "The X-Files," admits having seen strange lights in the sky. Michael Bcrgos, owner of Club New York, says in his suit filed Wednesday the negative publicity after the Dec. 27, 1999, shooting caused attendance to drop and corporate clients to cancel events. The club has sustained damages exceeding $600,000, the suit says. "I'm just disgusted, basically," Bergos, 34, said.

"There were damages to the club, but the main thing is my name." The club shooting happened after a man insulted Combs and threw money in his face. Combs protege, Jamal "Shync" Barrow, allegedly pulled a gun and opened fire, hitting three people. Barrow, 21, has been indicted on an attempted murder charge. Combs fled with girlfriend Jennifer Lopez, and bodyguard Anthony "Wolf Jones. The vehicle was driven by Wardel Fenderson.

Bergos' lawsuit also names Barrow, Jones, Fenderson and Bad Boy Entertainment, Combs' music production company, as defendants. Combs' lawyer, Benjamin Brafman, said he had not seen the lawsuit. "It never ceases to amaze me how many people are seeking to financially capitalize on Mr. Combs' wealth and celebrity status, despite knowing beyond question that he had nothing whatsoever to do with the shooting in Club New York." PAT SAJAK SEAN "PUFFY" COMBS ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) Pat Sajak and his wife have donated $1 million to the Anne Arundel Medical Center's new breast cancer treatment facility.

The Sajaks, who live in Severna Park, have "demonstrated a sincere desire to help the women of this community who face this very serious disease," Judy Stewart, chairman of the Breast Center fund-raising campaign, said Wednesday. The $2 million campaign will support the proposed foot center in the new six-story ambulatory health building being built in Parole. Sajak, host of the "Wheel of Fortune," served in 1999 as honorary chairman of the Hospice Cup XVIII, a sailing regatta in Annapolis that raises money for terminally ill patients. NEW YORK (AP) A management company has filed a $25 million lawsuit against 98 Degrees, saying the pop group turned off its commission spigot after the company built the band into a hot international act. Top 40 Entertainment said in a lawsuit filed Wednesday in U.S.

District Court that 98 Degrees was "plucked from obscurity" by the management company. Band lawyer John J. Rosenberg said they plan to file a counterclaim against Top 40 Entertainment and its principal officer, Paris D'Jon. "The band's view is that they had more than ample grounds to terminate Mr. D'Jon and Top 40 as their manager," Rosenberg said.

According to the lawsuit, D'Jon met the four singers in October 1995 when they were unknown in the music industry. A month later, the band signed a contract with D'Jon. D'Jon and his company financed the band, arranging recording contracts, promotional tours and TV appearances, the lawsuit alleges. In December 1999, the band terminated its contract, even though it was required to honor the terms of the deal through October 2001, the suit says. MALIBU, Calif.

(AP) Rod Steiger and Joan Benedict have tied the knot. About 30 people attended the wedding ceremony Tuesday at Steiger's home, spokeswoman Lori De Waal said. "They had been dating about two years," she said. The couple can be seen together early next year in the murder mystery "The Flying Dutchman." It is Steiger's fifth marriage; Benedict was a widow. NEW YORK (AP) Danielle Steel fans, put away your wallets and head for the nearest bookseller.

One million commemorative editions of the novelist's most popular work will be given away next week to mark the publication of her 50th book, "Journey." "This is certainly a very special month and celebratory milestone for me," Steel, whose books have sold more than 400 million copies, said Wednesday. "I'm very pleased and grateful for the long relationship I've shared with my readers." On Oct. 17, the Steel best sellers "Family Album," "Kaleidoscope" and "Fine Things" will be given away on a first-come, first-serve basis. The books, which include a "thank you" letter from the author, will-be available at superstores, independent sellers, drugstores, supermarkets and wholesale price markets. The novels, published by Delacorte Press, will not be available online.

Barnes Noble also declined to participate. "Journey" goes on sale Oct. 31.
