Ford swept the top four positions and seven of the top eight. Much of that is due to Roush Racing's 1-2 sweep with Martin in first and Wally Dallenbach, Jr. in second. Roush also owns road racing teams which compete in the Exxon GT and Trans-Am series, but this was the team's first road-racing win in Winston Cup. "We've been pretty impotent on road courses," team owner Jack Roush said.

"I was ready to win the first year at Sears Point and we haven't been able to do that. It's the first (for us) in Winston Cup and I'll remember it forever. It's real special that it comes here at Watkins Glen." i JASON KOSKIJournal Staff LEADER OF THE PACK: Mark Martin of the Valvoline team pulls ahead Sunday at Watkins Glen International. By DENNIS READ Journal Staff WATKINS GLEN For every two steps Mark Martin took forward at Sunday's Bud at the Glen, he took one step back. But Martin took advantage of Kyle Petty's late-race misstep to earn his first NASCAR Winston Cup victory of the season and his first win at Watkins Glen International.

Martin picked up a $98,800 bonus for winning frtm the pole, but it was hardly a flag-to-flag victory for the 34-year old native of Batesville, Ark. He was as far back as 15th with just 13 laps to go after getting stuck in the pits. "Realistically, I didn't think we could do it," said Martin, who set a new Glen qualifying record with a 119.118 lap. "I was awful far back without much time, but I buckled down and went for it. If we had not had an awesome car we never would have won this race." A set of soft lug nuts forced Martin's car to the end of the lead lap when everyone pitted under caution.

Martin quickly worked his way through the field and moved into third with six laps to go. He got some help on the next lap when race-leader Petty spun out in the Esses. Second-place Dale Earnhardt couldn't avoid Petty and the two collided in Turn 3. "I just lost it," said Petty, who won last year's rain-shortened race. "I ran up on the curb with the right front and when I did, it just pitched the car over on the left side.

When it landed, it spun around that way. Dale had no place to go and I hate it for him." Petty finished 26th while Earnhardt continued on and finished 18th. "I thought Kyle was going to slide to the right after he spun, but he went the other way," said Earnhardt, who actually widened his Winston Cup points lead over second-place Dale Jarrett. "I don't know if I could have caught Kyle or not if he hadn't spun. Mark Martin might have caught both of us." Martin took over the lead for two caution laps and wasn't pressed during the final three green-flag laps.

Martin finished 3.84 seconds ahead of Roush Racing teammate Wally Dallenbach, who finished second. "Our car was way faster than Wally's or anybody else's," said Martin, who earned a career-high and Watkins Glen record $166,110, including the Unocal bonus. "Once I got near a car I knew it wouldn't take too long to get by." Jimmy Spencer was third followed by Bill Elliott and Ken Schrader. MM Tommy Kendall, who normally drives for Roush in the Exxon Supreme GT series, finished 25th in the AK Racing Family Channel Ford. Fellow road-racing regular P.J.

There were seven caution flags for 21 laps and a six-minute red flag after Rick Mast crashed hard into the tire wall outside of Turn 10 on lap eight. Mast was treated and released at the infield medical center for a bruised shoulder. Those chasing Dale Earnhardt in the Winston Cup points standings missed a golden opportunity to gain some ground. Earnhardt finished 18th after crashing with Kyle Petty with six laps left.

Yet, he still managed to pad his points lead over second-place Dale Jarrett, who finished 32nd after dropping out with clutch problems. A five-time Winston Cup winner, Earnhardt is 281 points ahead of Jarrett and 341 points ahead of third-place Rusty Wallace. Martin moved up a spot to fourth, jumping of Morgan Shepherd, who is now fifth. Chemung's Geoff Bodine was one of four drivers to lead the race, leading twice for eight laps. Earnhardt paced the field twice for 26 laps while Petty led for nine laps before crashing.
