Phone company changes its new service procedure After early April, it will take a telephone call to one office and a visit to another to arrange for new telephone service. The change is in response to a 1980 Federal Communications Commission order deregulating new customer equipment. Now, when a customer wants a phone installed, he or she telephones New York Telephone's PhoneCenter in Pyramid Mall to arrange for a line and to buy or lease a phone. The customer can then pick up the telephone at the PhoneCenter.

But beginning in early April, the customer will telephone or visit N.Y. Telephone's Residence Service Center at 301 E. State then buy or lease a telephone at the Pyramid Mall office, which will be renamed the "Telephone Service Center." Or people can buy a telephone from another company. But New York Telephone will only be allowed to sell or lease equipment that was in the company's inventory on Jan. 31, 1982.
