Cortland comeback beats IC 9 By JIM ERICKSON After taking an early lead only to lose it, Cortland State scrambled back to edge the Ithaca College baseball team 8-7 at Cortland Tuesday afternoon. The Red Dragons built a 6-2 lead after six frames, but a five run outburst by the Bombers in the seventh inning pushed the Ithacans in front 7-6. Cortland pulled out a win with a pair in the ninth frame.

The win evened the season series between the two clubs at 1-1 as Ithaca had defeated Cortland 12-7 in the opener here one week ago. Ithaca is now 2-2 for the season and entertains LeMoyne for a doubleheader today at Freeman Field. Cortland jumped in front early with a single tally in the third inning and two more runs in the fourth frame. Ithaca stayed close with a pair in its fifth as Caroleo blasted a home run and Kevin Van Remmen drove home a run with a sacrifice fly after three walks loaded the bases. The Red Dragons took a 5-2 lead with two runs in its fifth inning as two hits and a walk loaded the bases and Michniewicz drilled a single to score a pair.

Cortland added a single a tally in the sixth. Ithaca jumped in front in the seventh with the help of some sloppy fielding by the Red Dragons, Two runners reached base on errors and Van Remmen cut the Cortland lead to 6-3 with an rbi single. Kucich singled to load the bases and Shields scored a pair with a single. Bram Kreiger was credited with the tying rbi and he later scored on a wild pitch. Cortland pulled out the win as Pieper led off the ninth with a double and scored on a single by Bowman.

A sacrifice and an infield error enabled Bowman to score the winning tally. iKirkwood 6-12 1 10 30 Game Los Angeles 1 Sutton 19-91 at Mn ran nusium Cisco iHalirki 12-161. 10 15 p.m. ab bi Thursday's Games Yount ss 4 0 0 0 Heise ss Thursday's ab bi 4 0 0 0 4 0 0 0 Milwaukee at Boston. 2 M04- 1 Pittsburgh at Chicago.

The festivities took place during Homecoming Weekend. Journal Photo by Larry Baum. South Seneca grid: Dundee this week By FRED YAHN Now that South Seneca has come down from the elation of winning its first football game of the year, a 12-7 triumph in the opener at Bath last Friday night, Coach Marv Rich's team can get down to business just football, and not worrying about budgets. The elation came not only from the win over Bath, a league win at that, but from the 2-1 margin by which the Interlaken-Ovid voters approved this year's athletic budget.

There had been squabbles, and the athletic budget had been defeated earlier in the school year. But the voters came through for the youngsters, and the youngsters responded with a win in the opener. South Seneca will be at home (Interlaken) this Saturday, for a 2 p.m. game against Dundee. The Scotsmen were a 6-0 winner over Pavilion, in a non-leaguer last Saturday night.

"We drove and drove this past weekend," said a weary Rich, who is also the Falcons' athletic director. On Friday night, it was over to Bath and back, and then on Saturday night, Rich and his assistants went to LeRoy, about 60 miles from Buffalo, where Dundee defeated Pavilion, 6-0, in a non-leaguer. Dundee was assessed 105 yards in penalties, and didn't score until the third period. They are the defending Western Division champions in the Wayne-Finger Lakes League, under Coach John Ballard. Jason Ballard is the team's quarterback, while Lenny Smith is the key running back.

Duane Marusarz is another top performer in the backfield. On defense, Ben Whitman, Steve Bailey and Steve VanHeusen had good opening games. South Seneca got some good offensive punch out of its backfield, too, with Greg Kenyon at the controls, Dan Lent and Dan VanVleet at other backfield positions, and Dan Pritchard alternating with Dave Arroyo at the fourth backfield spot. "We got the defense when we needed said Rich, of Friday night's win. "I thirk there are about five teams the same caliber in the league (Western Division of the Wayne-Finger Lakes League) South Seneca, Bath, Romulus, Dundee and Marcus Whitman'" said Rich.

"After that, the four strongest teams are Midlakes, Red Jacket, Geneva DeSales and Lyons. we have a chance at .500, I think." a Under the austerity program some $7,000 was cut out of the original $31,000 athletic budget and some coaches have had to get chauffeur's licenses to allow them to drive the small school bus station wagons," to transport teams to away games. This will cut down on expenses. The $7,000 is hopefully going to be raised by the newly-formed South Seneca Boosters, who pledged money to enable a re-vote on the sports budget. There are other cost-cutting measures which Rich and his coaches are going to employ.

For instance, home basketball games cost about $100 to put on, but with the help of the Boosters, that sum will be lessened. And there are other measures, which the coaches and the school will be grappling with during the upcoming year. "I'm so glad we're not going on a week-to-week basis, which is what it would have been, had we tried to make it with just the Boosters alone, and no athletic budget. We're getting some new equipment for the football team soon, and that's the way it should be." South Seneca endured the three weeks of pre-season practice with the purchase of seven new helmets, 60 mouthguards and no salaries for any of the coaches. The new field in Ovid is not ready for play, so the home games, for now, will be played at Interlaken.

WP -D Martinez T-3 09 A 16.160 By JIM ERICKSON i "It was one of the best opening game -performances ever." That was Ithaca College women's field i hockey coach Doris Kostrinsky's view of her team's performance in a 2-2 tie with Colgate on South Hill Tuesday afternoon.

The Bombers never trailed in the con- test and dominated most of the play with i a 25-16 edge in shots and a five minute advantage in possession time. 1 Ithaca jumped into a quick l-O lead at the three minute mark of the opening half 4 on a goal by Mary Alger and later took f. a 2-1 advantage on a score by Tina Klecha. Colgate knotted the final score by recording the only tally of the second half. i Ithaca unveiled a new offense as it broke away from the traditional five forward attack in favor of four forward, i four halfback setup.

Said Kostrinsky: "Our kids did a great jnb running the new offense with really only one day to concentrate on it," Kostrinsky said. "Our overall play was sharp as it was a fast moving game that suited our team well." i Ithaca opened with a rookie in goal and Karen Patterson responded with a superb effort making seven saves including a i stop of a penalty shot that could have been the gamewinner for the Red Raiders. The Bombers defensive play was solid sparked by Marny Fornwalt and Joanne Melone. In a scrimmage contest matching the second units of both clubs, Colgate edged the Bombers 3-1. Ann Ashford scored the Bombers lone tally.

i Blanham paces IC golfers Bob Blanham fired a 71 to pace Cor- 0 tland State to a double dual golf victories over Brockport State and host Ithaca College here Tuesday. The Red Dragons combined to fire a team total 309 to finish well in front of Brockport with 315 and Ithaca at 326. 1 Six golfers from each of the colleges participated in the play with the top four scores counted. Jim Bender paced Brocport with a 77 and both Rick Handelman and Greg Roberts had 81's for Ithaca. i IP ER BB SO 8 7 4 2 3 6 9 2 0 0 6 4 Minn.
