Del Rio News-Herald Thursday, February 27,1997 COMMUNITY Around Town With Ricky RICARDO MCGUIRE 775-1551 Learn history of Nat'l Park System tonight at 7 Join Park Ranger Amy Ireland, today, at American Campground for "National Parks: An American Tradition." Learn more about the history of the National Park System and how Amistad NRA fits into this grand tradition. American Campground is located on U.S. 90 West. The slide program will begin at 7 p.m., in the campground club house. UCO will meet Friday at 7:30 p.m., at UCO hall.

All members are encouraged to attend, and a botana will be served. Neal Sayers from London, England, will be featured at a city wide youth rally Saturday at 6 p.m., at the Grace Community Church, at 306 Margaret Lane. Call 774-5755 for details. The Vietnam Veterans of America meet every first Saturday of the month at Bowie Street's American Legion building. The next meeting will fall on March 1, and will begin at 10 a.m.

Cub Scout Pack 206 will be having a fund- Saturday at Moore Park beginning at 11 a.m. Half chicken plates will be sold for $3.50. Beans, rice and jalepenos will be included. Val Verde County Library will be closed Monday, in observance of Texas Independence Day. The library will resume regular hours on Tuesday, at 1 p.m.

The American Cancer Society is providing a Cancer Resource Center that is free and open to the public. It is located in the Val Verde Home Nurses, conference room at 2116 Avennue F. There is free literature regarding cancer, smoking, hypertension, etc. For more information, contact VVHN at 210-774-2198. Visiting Nurses of Del Rio sponsors free blood pressure screenings every Tuesday at the Joe Ramos Center from 9 a.m.

to 11 a.m., every Thursday at 712 Bedell from 1 to 5 p.m., and one to be held March 5 at the John Roland Center from 10 a.m. to noon. VNDR will also sponsor a blood pressure screening on March 19, from 1 to 5 p.m. "Dance in the Dome," at the April 12 Spurs game in San Antonio. All Del Rio girls 5-18 are invited to participate in "The 2nd annual Del Rio Junior Silver Dancers Clinic Tryout to be held March 8, from 9 a.m.

to 5 p.m., at the Del Rio High School Gym. No previous dance experience is necessary. Don't miss the fun-register now. Forms are available at the Del Rio Chamber of Commerce, Miss Bonnie's Dance Academy, Karen McKenzie School of Dance, and Georgia's School of Dance. Griner.

The program will be presented by All-State solo finalists. These young people are members of the DRHS choir under the direction of Jan Pressgrove. A 10K or 6.2 mile benefit for Grace Community Church, sponsored by Dot Highsteed, will be held March 22. Prizes will be awarded to the top three fundraisers. and to the top finishers in each age group. For more information please call 774-3888. or 774-5777, and ask for Dot.

Lara Gloria S. Lara, 42, died Thursday, Feb. 27, 1997 at her home in 1 San Felipe. She ws born April 8, 1954. Funeral services are pending under the diction of the Del Rio Funeral home at 200 E.

Garfield. BLOTTER Aggravated assault with a deadly weapon A tecnage boy reported to police Saturday at 4 a.m., his mother had physically assaulted him with a weapon while at their residence in the .700 block of East 11th Street. The victim had stated his mother had tried to hit him with a stick but was unsuccessful. The mother than allegedly grabbed a kitchen knife. stabbed at him, cutting his left wrist.

The victim's sister witnessed the incident. and gave officers an oral account of what she saw. The mother was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, police reports state. Accident A city-owned 1980 GMC 6000 Dump truck, driven by Armando Fernandez, was traveling north on Road when he lost control of the vehicle and wrecked. The acddent occurred Tuesday, at 11:39 a.m.

The vehicle skid a total 195 feet, before rolling onto the left side. Offcers determined the driver had been speeding: he suffered non-incapadtating injuries, police reports state. Assault by threat A 20-year-old male reported to police Tuesday, that at p.m., his roommate had become upset when the victim stated he would be moving out. The two had been living in an apartment complex located in the 100 block of Ricks Drive. The subject reportedly told the actor that he and his brothers would physically assault the victim.

The victim left the apartment complex following the threat, police reports state..
