Viewers curious about the quality of High Definition Television, or HDTV, should not miss "Japan's Secret Garden" on "NOVA" (10 p.m., PBS). You don't need an expensive new set to appreciate that crystal clarity of this gorgeous documentary by filmmaker Mitsuhiko Immamori. "Garden" explores the relationship between man and nature around the shores of Lake Biwa, a freshwater lake where people first began to cultivate rice thousands of years ago. Over the centuries, birds, reptiles and amphibians have adapted to the annual artificial flooding of terraced plains. Immamori employs the latest microphotography techniques to capture the intimate secrets of the smallest creatures right down to dragon fly larvae.

Beautifully shot, and featuring a score of traditional Japanese music, "Japan's Secret Garden" is a rare combination of science and poetry. Make-up wizard Kevyn Aucoin shares some cosmetic tips and shows off some fantastic transformations on "Rock Star Makeovers" on "All Access" (10 p.m., VH1). He shows how he makes rock stars look like famous people and makes the famous and semi-famous look like rock stars. He makes up singer Celine Dion to look like diva Maria Callas; Tori Amos becomes Mary, Queen of Scots; Cher takes on the mask of Spain's Queen Isabella, and Alexandra Von Furstenberg ends up looking like Cher. And don't miss Tina Turner as Cleopatra.
