973-635-2328. Mgr. at Scandinavian Fest 2000's dance, cuisine, culture draws thousands This year's event marks anniversary of Leif Eriksson's arrival BY MALENE ARCE BYRAM TWP. Anna and Lars had the perfect Norwegian wedding. Dressed in embroidered wool clothes and a crown for the bride, they held a wedding procession, exchanged vows, then watched the folk dancing that followed.

For Anna and Lars real names Heidi and David the marriage was just a sham. No need to apologize to the guests, though: The couple didn't know any of them anyhow. The wedding was part of Scandinavian Fest 2000, which attracted thousands of visitors who came to celebrate their links to the Nordic countries and take a peek at Finnish reindeer, Icelandic sheep, Danish and Estonian dancers and Swedish singers. This year's celebration also marked the anniversary of Norse explorer Leif Eriks- ASSOCIATED PRESS It's "an ethnic inheritance festival to celebrate and promote the current life and the histories and the traditions of the Nordic countries." Carl Anderson, a festival organizer son's arrival to North America on a wooden boat. It was a theme underscored by a generous sprinkling of Vikings in capes, leather sandals and horned helmets.

A miniature wooden ship was brought to the outdoor festival Sunday to illustrate how Eriksson's sailed in North America 500 years before Christopher Columbus. It's "an ethnic inheritance festival to celebrate and promote the current life and the histories and the traditions of the Nordic countries," said Carl Anderson, one of the organiz- ers, who is of Swedish descent, It was also a chance to meet with friends and buy a variety of delicacies including candy and crackers, fish cakes, Danish meatballs, herrings and Swedish pancakes. "I'm very interested in the food," said Ran Buck, 30, a former Israeli fighter pilot who now works as a chef in New York City. He was at the festival with an Israeli friend, who is married to a Swede. Children were entertained by live performances and troll stories.

Older visitors took in lectures on Vikings and Nordic genealogy. Donned in colorful wool pleated skirts for the women and knee-high-pants for men, the Randlane dancers of Lakewood performed Estonian folk dances. True to custom, the men would at times sweep their partners off the floor. "Many of our lighter dances are to free yourself from the ground, to seek height," said Karin Lichter, 57, one of the dancers and the daughter of Estonians.
