Exploration and Survey of the Okcfeno kce Swamp. The Savannah Georgian, of Thursday last, says The last session of the Georgia Legislature took action in favor of a survey of the Oke fenokea swamp, for the purpose of determin 'ing, among other things, the feasibility of draining it, and thus preparing tne way lor it sale and cultivation. The swamp contains something like a half million of acres, as many suppose, of the richest soil in Georgia. the world at large, it is terra incognita. On one side of it are the head waters of the Suwannee, passing down into the Gulf; on the other is the St.

Marys, emptying into the AUaatio. The presumption is that the bed of the Okefenokeeuis more elevated than either, and hence that it may be drained into one or the other, or both. Mr. Hunter, of Milledgeville, an experienced engineer, and a gentleman of the highest character, has been selected by the Governor to make the survey. Mel 1 All CU1U Dtl ITT III I IT" fE) Visw" the steamer Champion to Glen Cove, to wit ness the operations oi one oi deputed by the U. S. Navy Department at Washington descended nnriar Witt Ar thv in the xsautuus. hitched on a block oi Stone weigmag ions and containing 56 cubic feet, returning with it to the surface in 4 minutes 30 seconds.

After moving through the water 30 feet, they Kcriun. aeoosuea ine stone, auu ic turned to the surface, having been in the bell 9 minutes 37 seconds. Alter mis tnp, muic and gentlemen descended a dozen together. and expressed themselves highly graiinea with their experience. The.

snnnrHtna is a combination of a reser voir charged with condensed air by a steam air pump, stationed ai uue iun.oUu nected by flexible hose with the Nautilus, which is in the water. The apparatus may be in various forms the present is an inverted trnncated cone, with a spherical top. It is about ten feet in diameter at the largest part. and eight feet in height. It is made entirely of boiler iron of great thickness.

It is inde pendent of suspension, and noars at tne win of the operator. There are chambers on both sides of the machine, into which water is ad mitted when it is desired to Sinn the macnine. By opening a valve in the top, connected with the hose trom tne reservoir, air admitted of sufficient density to counterbalance the density of the water outside. The requisite density is determined by proper gauges placed in the side of the operating chamber. The cover of the bottom is removed after these preliminaries, and communication is obtained with the bottom.

In order to move where no current exists, the operator steps on the bottom and carries the machine with him. In current or tide, cables passing from four windlasses iDside, through the plane of the centre of gravity, to anchors, previously placed, admit of movement in any direction. In order to lift weights, a bar with swivel hook is passed across the bottom. Affixing this hook to a stone or other weight, the water valves are opened, and condensed air from the reservoir is admitted into the chambers. This expulsion of water exercises a lifting power exactly equal to the weight of the water expelled.

As soon as the object is lifted from the bottom, movement in any direction may be made to deposit the weight, water is again admitted. The connection with the air reservoir being always closed, except when air is being admitted, the air previously admitted is allowed to escape by a valve arranged for the purpose. The water being again admitted, as stated, causes the apparatus to sink and the weight to be deposited. The perfect command which the operator has over the movements of the Nautilus, permits this de Doeit to be made with the greatest nicety. This simple description embraces the whole nnarntnii As steam cannot be carried under water, ai of the same density, it is found, may be usee as a motive power below the surface, and ap plied to the working of, rock drills, sawing of piles, Ac, by a small engine in the operating chamber, to which the condensed air is carried by bose, in the same manner as steam is carried from the steam boiler to the cylinder.

By an arrangement of a chamber upon the side of the Nautilus, holes may be bored in the timbers oi a sunKen snip, in wmcn eye bolts may be subseaaentrr placed, to which camels or pontons may be attached, which, being subsequently filled with powerfully con densed air irom the reservoir, will raise the vessel. The lifting force is incredible. The Nautilus is also available in laying masonry under water. The power as developed yesterday, as compared with previous methods, excited astonishment trom those most laminar with the business. The Nautilus, floating at the surface, de scended in twenty two ieet water, the cover was removed from the bottom, a stone fifty six cubic feet, weighing about five tons, was affixed to the cross bar, and brought to tbe surface, in four or five minutes the Nautilus, with stone still suspended, was then moved between twenty and thirty feet, again descended, deposited tbe stone, and returned to the surface tbe whole time occupied in de scending, lifting, moving, depositing, and returning to the surface, being but 04 minutes.

The amount of masonry laid by the ordinary diving bell averages four hundred and fifty cubic feet per day. There may be laid with the Nautilus, if the Exhibit of yesterday be the criterion by which to judge, thirty five hundred cubic feet a day at a cost of thirty five dollars, which is considerably less than tbe ordinary cost of masonry laid out of water. By the aid of the Nautilus, the topography the bottom of bays and rivers can be ascer tained with ease, the heaviest masonry tor sea walls and fortifications laid without difficulty, and sunken vessels, of large tonnage, may eedily be brought to the surface. Its adaptability to the pearl fishery is affirm by adepts. The introduction of the Nautilus into England, will give our cousins a new sensation, akin to that produced by the yacht America and tbe frigate Merrimac.

It is, as expressed by ex Lieut, liov. (now tbe Harbor Commisssioners,) an invention tane money out of John Bull's pocket for where will it be more quickly appreciated, more highly valued, or more extensrvely used, than in Great Britain. The Nautilus itself costs about four thou sand dollars, but, for tbe engines and other appliances all complete, six er seven thousand dollars will be required. fcP The steamship Ed in burg left New York on the 15th inst for Glasgow, with 46 first and 114 second cabin passengers.
