Not many years ago a comparatively small school sprang info existence in the smoky at-, mospbere of Wheeling, West Virginia.

as its unusual advantages oecaine- known, the number; of pupila increased nnt if was found that 1he original houset though greaUy enlarged, was insufficient to accommo date them. vvrtn6 eqnai enterprise and judg-j ment, the "Ladies of. the under whose the Academy ia conducted; bought, sometime a beautiful of land of more than a hundred acres, twomilea from town, there nestling in a perfect paradise of hill and dale, is now to be seen a spacious and elegant building, the site having the title at the bead of this article. -i Education is a very -vexed question. There comparatively, few persons who understand that the real object of school discipline is to prepare the mind, by thought, for actionl It is a common error to suppose that a certam number of books gone through in a stated time, will enable the student to fight well the great battle of life.

In the present stage ef oar country's history, we need strong men and noble, wamen7 and that' our fashionable colleges 'and boarding schools do not send forth such' men' and 'such is a well recognized fact, which we cannot sufficiently deplore. There are, however," a few schools do-fg their utmost to filfill their true mission, and among the foremost of these stands Mount de' Chan tel. We would strongly advise all who have daughters to educate to examine the claims of this institution, before running the risk of sending delicate young girls where they may be morally and physically. A city is not the -place in which to. educate Fresh air, beautiful scenery, ample space for exercise, are indispensable adjuncts to a good school, and all these are to be found at Mount de ChantaL.

It is proposed, as soon as the weather will permit, to open a regular riding course, where the young ladies can daily exercise on well-trained ponies. A skating pond for winter, several games.of croquet, for summer, a bowling-alley, gymnasium and billiard table for all seasons, show that the Sisters by no means intend to cultivate the mind at the expense of the body. We have, as yet, said but little of the building itself. It is arranged with a view to elegance as well as to comfort large airy rooms, well heated and admirably ventilated some de voted to study others to recitations, to music or recreation, all opening into spacious corridors. But the pride of the building is its large music hall, a finely proportioned room, in which the pupils of the Academy give occasional musical and literary soirees to their parents and friends.

In music, both vocal and instrumental, Mount de Chantol may safely challenge competition with any academy in the country, while the French language is taught with peculiar accuracy for pronunciation and accent, enabling the pupil to converse with fluency, after sufficient, practice; a knowledge of this language being deemed indispensable. By -means of weekly exhibitions in private, in the presence of teachers and pupils, the young ladies are trained to that self-possession so essential in a musical performer. attention is also given to elocution, "both In English, and French and in this manner choice readings vary the programme of each Saturday evening. The rate of board, with such fare and accommodations as have only to be tested to be duly appreciated, contrasts wonderfully with the extravagant charges in other directions, and can easily be ascertained by addressing the Directress of the Academy, Mount de Chantal, West Virginia. j.
