Many ef oar readers, we fancy, have little idea of the large quantity of sugar, molasses, now bought ia this city for the Chicago market. Our expor tations direct to Chicago commenced with the opening of the Illinois Canal, and tbey have since been steadily increasing. We have recently seen many notices in the St. Louis papers of the receipt ef large quantities of groceries from this city to be forwarded to Chicago. In the river intelligence" from St.

Louis, given in another column, it ia stated thaU the steamboat Georgia had arrived from this port with two hundred and eighty hogsheads segar, ninety five tierce rice, Ac, alt for Chicago. Formerly the merchants ol that city purchased their groceries in New York. Since the canal was opened they have found it to their interest to purchase here. We have no doubt that ere long all the heavy grocery dealers at the various towns and cities on the great chain of lakes, wilt, for the like reason, come to this market instead of going to New York. In the growth ef our grocery trade with Chicago, we have good evidence of the benefit conferred upon communities far apart by the opening of new lines of communication.

f7" About the meanest thing we have seen a white man do lately, we witnessed the other day. A well dressed person stopped a newsboy, took one of his papers of the evening edition just walked leisurely op the street a full square, glanced ever every column on the page and saw what was news and what wasn't, and then handed th paper back to the boy saying, "I believe I wont take it." Since then we have bad various and contradictory rumors aa to the fate of this route. At one time we were informed that the con tract for the transportation of the malls over it had been aigned by the Postmaster General; then we were told that it had been thrown out hy the Senate Committee on Post Routes, because the Postmaster General had proceeded without due authority; then that it had failed by an unfortunate omission in the Appropriation bill, which left out the clause providing the means for its compensation and lately, advices from the North have confidently asserted that it will be immediately pat in operation. We are glad to have it in our power now to give onr reader some information in this matter, which we have obtained from reliable Sources, The Mexican Ocean Mail and Inland Company is a fixed fact.

The managers are making their preparations to carry out the contract with great activity. The contract is duly signed and the company will shortly commence operations. The omission of the Senate committee to report on the matter, and of an appropriation for carrying out the contract, was made with the knowledge and consent of the company. They were willing to go on with their offer and estab lish a mail between New Orleans and San Fran cisco, effecting the transit in sixteen days. The Lou lot an a delegation at Washington were ready to bring the matter before Congress, but the agents of the company requested them to refrain from doing so.

On the 7th the Post Office Department issued an order to the parties to the contract to commence the service as soon as possible, and the arrangements are being made with all expedition. We are informed that th steamers for the service, both in the Gulf and the Pacific, are all ready, and that Col. Ramsey will soon leave New York for Mexico In order to expedite matters there. We are glad that this affair is so satisfactorily arranged. The importance of this route is very great to New Orleans, and we shall hail with pleasure the arrival of the first regular mail by it from California.

The steamer Kale Swinney, from Brunswick yesterday evening, brought 240 bales hemp, thirty nine hogshead tobacco, and a large amount of other freight Three steamers, from the Missouri yesterday, brought 804 bale hemp and 1,318 coils bale rope. This, we believe, ia the largest receipts for one dav of either article this season. LeidesdorfT left no heirs in California. A claim to his estate wa set no bv certain persons. It was thought to be a spurious one, and the Attorney General of the State was called on by special instructions to Investigate tbe matterv and in case he found that the State had a valid claim to the estate from the want or heirs, he was authorized to institute suit. The Attorney General reduced the case to the investigation of two questions: First whether the heirs of LeidesdorfT, being aliens, could inherit; and second, whether there are any heirs to inherit this estate.

He came to the conclusion, from an examine tion or the Mexican law before and after the Republic, and from the opinions of distinguished Mexican lawyers, that aliens could inherit real estate in Mexico. The Attorney General places this estate under the jurisdiction of the Mexican laws which governed California before it became a possession of the United States. A Mexican lawyer gave the following opinion The succession of LeidesdorfT, being a naturalized citizen, must be regarded the same as that of any other Mexican citizen consequently, the mother of the deceased, he having no legitimate children, becomes tbe heir ex teetamtnto. The fact of the heir being an alien could not affect this result If Leidesdorfl had made a will, he might have bequeathed two thirds of hit property to any other person but having died intestate, all of bis property descended to his mother, without any incumbrance or condition. If California had continued a Mexican territory, the heir would have been obliged to remove into the Republic, or to sell her real estate with in two years from the time the succession was determined or decided upon.

Art. Vlll.of the uecree oj Marc 11, 1SK. Several living witnesses in the Island of St Croix have proved that there is an heir to the estate now in that island.
