JUUKK ABOUT THE RESIDENT. AS CVerV a a i i tmng waring upon ins iute oi in is vessel is read with avidity, we publish the latest rumors from the New York Herald of the 13th.

It is the reneral opinion now that the wreck. seen by Captain Bowman, of the Recovery, was that of the President. We are of that opinion, and the more so since we have con versed with Captain Ramgerard of the barque Paoli, who arrived here on the 25ih ult. from Antwerp. At first there was a possibility that ne resident bad been lost in the ice on the Banks, but we do not believe that such was the case.

We make up our minds on this the President was not lost in the ke. When Cuptain Kainrerard passed over the banks, the steamer bad been absent one month and one day: and. nrcKrc, uau pienty oi tune, even v.tie was disabled in the gale of the 13th and 14 March, to have rone clear to the eastward, the wind having blown almost continually from the westward, and so strong, that our packets were driven over in fifteen days. We think that she encountered no ice. whatever; for we cannot believe that Captain Roberts would have gone so far out of his way as to takn a- passage north of lat.

45, and there was no ice to that degree for one mouth after left this harbor. The large islands seen by Captains Bailey, lloskins and Briton, on the 17th and 18th nit. came down between the 13th and those days. It is, therefore, conclusive the steamer is safe, if she did not founder in the gale we bave mentioned. This is the opiirion of Captain Raiorerard, who is an experienced navigator, and has creased the Atlantic twenty tunes in our Havre packet ships.

Further Jlryoris. We learn that Captaiu Pierce, who arrived in this city yesterday from Boston, reports that as he left that city on Tuesday afternoon, a pilot arrived up from below with information that the steam ship President was safe at Barbadoes. The pilot said a vessel had jnst arrived off the port wrth the intelligence. We think ibis rather an improbable story first, because Captain Litcb, of the this port, from the river Gambia, via Barbadoes, whence she sailed on tlie 17th nlu, made no mention of her. Second, because Capt.

Pierce did not give publicitr to the intelligence immediately on bis arrival here; and thirdly, becanse it seldom happens that a pilot comes upwitboni bringing the vessel with hint. To-day's maiJuhowever, will tell. it fcOMMUMIClTED. r' THE NEW DRY DOCK. Messrs.

As the summer proceeds the business on the Levee becomes every week duller, and since our last, the transactions in Western produce bave been quite unimportant.

The news from England, biougbt by the Britt.inia; sccbik to have beeu viewed in a favorablo light as regards the general apecl of things on the other side, and the satisfactory position of the money market, coupled with the scttlcmeHt of the China question, aud the flattering prospect for the harvest, have contributed to strengthen confidence in the article of cotton iu thi market. It must be -observed, however, that trade iu the manufacturing districts contiuued in a very depressed state, and owing to this, the consumption of the raw maWial has fallen off nearly 4000 per month, with several failures in commercial douce to a large amount. COTTON. A better demand than hnd beeu experienced fur some daya previous was eviuced at the opening of the market thia week. OuModuy we were placed in possession of accouuts from Liverpool to the 20th per Britannia.

The principal feature iu the intelligence, the settlement of the Chiuese question, and consclucllt resumption of trade between that country and British India, by which, it is presumed, a larire amount of Eait ludia CoUou will be diverted front the English markets. A vary animated demand immediately sprung up in our market on receipt of this intelligence, and an advauce of fully 1 per lb. haa beeu obtained on the Kales of the lart threo days. The largo transactions of the week have very much reduced the stock ou baud, which consists chiefly of Teuuesee and North Alabama Cottons. Good Cottons are very scarce, and the prices obtained for tli cm are comparatively much higher than the ordiuury and middling qualities.

The transactions in the Sugar market have been to a fair extent this wrck, the sales reaching fully 1100 principally of the better trades, the stock of which light, aud a slight advance has been obtained inferior Sugars are little sought after, aud will not command over 4c. and the Levee has no a tirge supply of this description.

MOLASSES. There has been a good inquiry for Molasses on the Levee, the receipts at the same time continue light, and the stock much reduced. Prices have in consequence advanced to Sic per gal. TOBACCO. The market remains in the same state noticed iu eur last report, holders continuing very firm, while purchasers tersist iu their determination of keeping nut of the market at present rates; prices, consequently are altogether nominal.

The stock in the meantime continues to increase rapidly, and thayvow on tho market caunot be less than 11,000 bhr, a larger quautit) than has been for sale at any one period for many years past. Au uncx-pccled rise in Green aud Barren rivers hns permitted the egress of the large quantity of Tobacco lately icked np iu those rivers, the arrival of which may be expected in the course of ten days. During the week the transactions in the Flour market have lieu quite limited, only a few hundred barrels haviug been taken for export at $4 25 with this exception the business has been cou-fined to retail sales of the beet brmuds for bakers at $4 311; owing to the absence of any material export demaud the stock is again on the increase, and holders are billing sellers at these prices.
