The editor of tbe 'True Delta drop without compunction and without ceremony the bold affirmation with which they set out that the Vixen's despatch was a forgery, made for the purpose of deceit, out of the news ot the Empire City.

The falsity of tbatch irue being Completely established, they have passed over to the opposite position. A part of the new sent from this city to Mobile, as rece.vea by the Linulrn City. wa. as they allege and try to make much of it, made out of the despatch from the Vixen. One way or the other, thy ra determined to make matter lor the aspersion of motives.

Tha whole thing is msceptible of the easiest ex planation, In which it will puzzle the moat Deerinj! spirit of malice to find anything wrong. ieiegrapnic despatches are made up In the office of the Picayune, by a regular correspondent ot a number of Northern papers, on hi own private account, and for hi own benefit, by arrangements which he make for himself, and not as agent tor this paper. V'e are, however, always willing to vouch tor his industry and fidelity. On Thursday he had before him the voluminous correspondence received by the Empire City at this port from Ha vana, aud at the same time the telegraphic de spatch from the Vixen at Pensacola. He proceeded to makeup his despatches as usual, and Included the latest intelligence, as he understood it, from both points He sent several despatches to Mobile, but each one was sent to 1 the papers, and If he included under the head of the Empire City one item which had come by the Vixen from Mobile, it was an lnadvertance which would be at once un derstood there as a mistake.

The Em Dire Citv's news followed in the P.cayune the next morning with a special caution against too ready a belief in the iavorabie reports; and this has been the uniform tone of the paper. The Idea that the return to Mobile ot an item which came Irom there, was part ol a combination to deceive, or proof of an intent to deceive, could only enter into a mind depraved by the indulgence of rancorous feeling. We have uniformly expressed our fear that the first reports in favor ot the progress of the party under (Jeu. Lopez were much overstated by sanguine friends in Havana but we aie not yet pre pared t.5 pronounce them altogether untrue, or to denounce with l.uter and revtngeful temper all wno wilt not declare them at once to be fraudulent torgerie. We give tieoi with caution, but we not suppress them if they come from sources we rrbpect and we will continue, at all times, to repel as ta se and calumnious the imputation, from any quarter, tnat anything ever proceed from ini oltice colored with the intent to deceive.

Tlie ltttporls. At the time of the Empire City's arrival, the excitement, concerning the massacre ot our fedow ctizns iu Havana was so great, and public atten tentlon so strongly attracted to that melancholy event, that 'we gave but 'casual attention to the Spanish official reports, with the exception of that ol Admiral Hustilloa. Subsequently, on reading them over in company with a gentleman of experience aud military knowledge, we found that tbey were ot interest and deserved republication. The result of ibis conviction is the translations in our norninii's paper. lien.

Stkamship Hi mboldt. Escape at Sea The steamer Humboldt, on her last passage from Havre to New Vork, made a very narrow escape Irom total destruction on Cape Race, about twenty miles southeast of the light. On Saturday morn e. the 9 inst at halt past 1, the'Boston Tran penpt says her passengers were all aroused by a hi.ck precisely like striking some rock, and rushing on deck they found the steamer broadside to a bold rock, apparently within half a ship's length. Tie terrible consternation caused by the position ct the ship, the bold rock, the dense fog and the alarm of tne pneuger, both male and female, presented a scene which no witness to it would de sire to experience again.

The worthy commander and first officer of tho steamer were both cn deck and saw the rock sometime before they realized what it was, supposing it to be a fog bank and when the thrilling command to starboard the helm wis beard below and the engine suddenly st 'pp. a tet'ling ol impending destruction to all ou board was felt by many a bold heart. The very strong force of the Arctic current (so called) at this place. together with an uncommon variation of the Com pa, are the only reason ascribed for the false position of the ship. During service on the Sun day following, special thank were ordered for the providential escape.
